There are many things about the American-Iraq War that are similar to the American-Vietmanese War.
This current fighting in Iraq is not any where on the scale of the TET offensive.
This comparison degenerates the accomplishments of the planning and scale of attack by the NVA/VC
If the Iranians launch a mass attack, via their Shia allies, then maybe we can compare it to TET.
Also unlike the American-Iraq War, during the American-Vietmanese War, the American public was better informed of the true nature of War.
The MSM has shielded the public from any type of realistic view.

Yeah, having spent the entire Vietnam war passed-out underneath a pool table in Texas, I don't think he really realized what he was saying. He probably thinks of the Tet offensive as a bloodbath for both sides, but one which began the end of the VC, while forgetting that it was also a turning point in the war that began the end of the U.S. involvement, and the end of the Saigon government.
So, he didn't really understand what the Tet offensive meant. Big deal. Odds are that most of his base doesn't understand it either, and is still blaming the fall of Saigon on Jane Fonda.

Bush's anology to Tet is instructive.
But, GWB mistakenly believes that the effect of Tet was to give the public the mistaken idea that we couldn't win in Vietnam.
Wrong.
The Tet offensive PROVED that we couldn't "win" in Vietnam. A political solution by force of arms was not possible for an occupying force.
And, Dumb Dubya, we can't "win" in Iraq either.

This is interesting. If the Chimperor had the slightest idea what Tet represented to American foreign policy, and at the same time believed in prevailing in Iraq, he would never have uttered these words. So the presumption is that he is once again ignorant.
But what if he does know (or more likely was informed in the scripting process) about the meaning of Tet. Is he giving a nod to the Baker Commission, speaking in code? Is he about to announce a major policy adjustment. Is Baker's Plan, at long last, the Secret Plan to Win the War, part deux?
Baker, according to David Sanger in his 10/12 article, has been in close cahoots with Steven Hadley throughout the commission process. And as such, in cahoots with Arbusto.

So the only tactic available to those that wish to suppress the overwhelming majority of Iraqis is carnage, not popular support, but carnage aimed at the left in the US to cut and run. The reality based community is like Rosie that can not differentiate between the United States and Bush. Tet was a complete failure by the Viet Cong, they were DECIMATED and never achieved a popular uprising, yet the reality based community gave them a victory. We only face an insurgency in Iraq because the left is so reliable to feed the OBL's that democracy is weak. That 70's Show mentality by the left is not going to repeat. Let's debate Tet in the final weeks of this election. Will America make the same mistake again?

Very good, they won, not on the battlefield, but the streets of Washington. That is what you want, defeat at home. I recommend that we use this opportunity to win both Vietnam and Iraq at the same time. End the use of insurgency as a tactic to defeat the US. If I were a candidate, This is the time for us to give our Vietnam veterans the victory they deserved, we will not make the same mistake twice and squander our troops in Iraq too.

Don't you pay attention to the "facts on the ground"? Insurgents and outside agitators are a small percentage of the problem in Iraq. Mostly, it's Iraqis killing Iraqis -- Sunni killing Shia.
You're so misguided and ignorant, you think "giving our soldiers... a victory" is how we should be thinking about this. Between 30,000 and 600,000 Iraqis have died because of Bush's invasion. The country is tearing itself apart because of a situation your Boyfriend-in-Chief caused, and for which he has no plan and no solution.
This isn't about having a big dick and shooting the right people with your big, hard gun. So cut the macho crap, you keyboard warrior, and get educated. If you close your mouth and open your eyes, you might learn something.

The TET offensive was a turning point in the war... we were lied to then by the administration of Johnson, with Westmoreland on the ground in country. When your initial battle plan, and the plan for reconstruction, includes "Win the Hearts and Minds of the People", you are just fucking fucked up! Did any of these guys see "Red Dawn", I know it's cheesy fiction... but, did the Cubans and Russians really win the hearts and minds of the people? I certainly wouldn't be throwing roses and hersheys kisses at North Korean Tanks coming down Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta, no matter how they militarily 'regime changed' the Chimpster, or how fucked up my government and country has become! BUSH: George, my gut tells me that they have all along been trying to inflict enough damage that we’d leave.
Really? Ya think so? Yer GUT tells ya that? Imagine that - an enemy trying to inflict damage to repel intruders. What a novel tactic.
Well, you might as well listen to your gut, George, because your brain sure as sh*t hasn't proven itself to be any better at perceiving reality.
By the way, I'm on board with the Bush defeat crowd. To not support the defeat of the man who took away oversight of governmental eavesdropping, who took away habeus corpus, who either lied or purposefully misled about the need to go to war with a sovereign nation, who oversaw the neglect of aid to an american disaster area, who abandoned the hunt for the orchestrator of the biggest mass murder in our nations history, who exempts hiself from any bill he signs... to not support the defeat of this man is at worst treasonous, and at best stupid.

Another Tet Offensive? Naw, that was an organized drive with its own North Vietnamese name. In Iraq, they've been gradually ratcheting up the pressure for the past three years, first killing one American soldier every two days, then one per day, and now two per day. When we finally leave, we'll have well over three thousand dead American soldiers to add to King George's scorecard, in addition to 650,000 Iraqies.
The Iraqis have a simple message for us: "Thanks for knocking off Saddam, now go away." Bush doesn't hear the second part. Perhaps, come November, voters will begin to educate him.

The Vietnam Syndrome in the case of Iraq is a false historical analogy. The VS was preventing America from committing its troops for over twenty years. Under Reagan, because of VS we used proxies to often fight our wars. That's why we armed Saddam Hussein to fight his eight year war against Iran, because at the time the Ayatollah Khomeini was the official boogy-man of the US. In Desert Storm I and II (the sequel), we may have very well faced our own weapons when we went to war.
In Iraq, the forces are already committed, and we never had any pre-war discussion over the advisability or the feasibility of the war. We were essentially rushed into it, with phony baloney claims of WMD's, the abuse of the Authorization to Use Force (Not a formal declaration of war nor a police action). When any of us tried to throw the brakes on the pell-mell rush, the standard Republican mantras were, "You're part of the Blame America First Crowd," or "Why do you hate America?" It's like none of these chicken-hawks ever heard of Sun Tzu.

If you were a candidate, and ran on this ridiculous premise, then you would lose.
The reason the US "lost" Vietnam was because the politicans were trying to accomplish something that War can't accomplish.
Just like in Iraq. You can't establish democracy by force of arms. Vietnam was incredibly stupid enough, but with that example our occupation of Iraq is sheer lunicy.

As a Vietnam veteran I say critics of this war that portray it as similar to Vietnam are missing such an important point and are fatally incorrect. Vietnam had a draft that ended the polarization of the country. There is no draft in this war folks and there damn well should be starting with Bush's daughters and the rest of Congress's kids. Gradual withdrawl? I don't think so, it would be the "Great Skedaddle", like the first Bull Run!!!!
