The right wing agenda is to disassociate Bush from "traditional conservativism." Some bloggers and columnists are calling hims a "liberal Republican" or some such garbage. It isn't about rejecting the neo-cons, but saving their own asses. They will be glad to treat us once again to a radical in moderate dress, just as they originally presented Bush.

Tweety is giving them cover, citing the great sages Buckley and Ford.

If Buckley was such a man of principle, why did he wait until after we were clearly losing to denounce the war? Same with Ford, asking that his comments be released posthumously. We are talking about WAR, the most serious decision a nation can make. The wise old men of the party stood silent, supposedly with deep reservations, and then savage the young leader once the inevitable has happened.

IF BUCKLEY AND FORD AND THE REST OF THE CONSERVATIVE SAGES GAVE A FLYING F#CK ABOUT THIS COUNTRY, THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN ON MY TELEVISION, INSEAD OF SEAN HANNITY 24-7.

as a former democrat and a former republican, this article does speak to me...

i was astonished at how easily the democratic party rolled over to the republican party in 2002...

i asked loudly, "hey wait a minute, who's going to represent us, the people against this war..."

i was actually warned to keep these opinions to myself... that the office i was working in as a temporary contractor would not appreciate these views...

after pat buchanon hijacked the independent party in 2000... and basically destroyed it... there really was no-one to represent those of us who knew this was going to be a disaster...

and while i find myself disagreeing and even taking offense at some of the ultra liberal posits that are on occasional display here on this blog...

i find that, given the correct analysis by Greenwald of the new definitions of "conservative" and "liberal", i must hope the democratic party, with it's new found power, takes down this administration and jails as many as possible...

for a brief period of time, a saying was going around: we need the republican wing of the republican party to take control of the republican party...

we can only hope...

The great amnesia begins, as "mainstream" GOPers, "traditional" conservatives and TV talk pudits suddenly forget how vociferously they attacked people who have had antiwar positions over the last 3 -4 years. Matthews, George Will, Pat Buchanan (for all his isolationism) and scores of others castigated people who voted against the war as lunatics, traitors, terror-supporters, sore losers and just plain stupid. Now, all of a sudden, those same people are pointing fingers at a handful of neocons and yelling "They did it! Not me! Go get them!"

John - do you keep an archive of the clips you show? Because I'd love to go digging through them to show Matthews and others braying about how crazy Howard Dean is and how others with Dean's views are crazy, sore-loser Bush-bashers who hate the troops and want America to mollycoddle Al Qaeda.

What is that famous phrase Matthews girlishly delivered about Bush? That he has a "sunny nobility." Meanwhile, the rest of us were popping Pepcid because we could so clearly see the catastrophe unfolding from miles (and years) away

If you listen to the beginning of the clip, she says that Ford didn't join in the frey of criticizing the President like Jimmy Carter did: "Who are so critical of a sitting president and his foreign policy". (She says it in such a way that sounds like being critical is somehow wrong.)

Is it somehow considered wrong in US culture for an ex-president to criticize a sitting one? (I'm not from the USA and don't know the culture so I don't really know.)

This has been a warm winter, particularly in the east for the most part, so the rise in energy costs hasn't bitten as bad as it could have.

As for Bush's options, I honestly think he's "thinking" about them as much as he was "thinking" about whether or not to go to war with Iraq...in other words, the conclusion was established a long time ago.

For Bush...

Maintain the same number of troops = "stay the course". Already been rejected.

Cut the number of troops = "cut and run". Already been rejected.

So he's going to increase the number of troops. He can pretend he's considering other options, but he's not. I'll be stunned if I'm wrong on this.

I would like to see journalists continue to point out that, not only are some prominent people speaking out against the war, but MORE IMPORTANTLY the American people have spoken out against the war with the votes. Don't forget Everett Dirksen in that list. He represented our district here for many years and like Barry Goldwater, you could disagree with him without being disagreeable. You might want to include Jim Edgar in there too.

The best Illinois politician ever other than Abraham Lincoln in my opinion was Paul Simon. I had the chance to meet him personally several times and he was just as humble and self effacing privately as he was in public. To me, he represents the ideal of what public service should be about---not selfish gain, but other centered service for the collective public benefit.

Also take a look at "Mr Conservative" on HBO sometime. Given the sorry state of conservatism today, you will have a whole new appreciation of how people like Hanretty and others have twisted a decent philosophy into an unrecognizable mutant of the original.
