It's a good thing Feingold decided not to run for President. He can say and threaten things a candidate couldn't. Threatening to pull funding! That takes balls. A president can declare war and be the decider, but the price of it is decided by those who have the power.

If anything it's better that Condi was the punching-clown. If it was Dubya I'm sure their comments would have been more restrained, since it seems both parties have gotten into the habit of ball-licking (conforming is patriotic and a treasured American value!). This could lead to a possible "escalation" as various senators "augment" their position on presidential support.

Your comments actually show your "non-US" arrogance, not the opposite. Dude, plenty of folks on this site are critical of current official US policy; you are just showing your arrogance/ignorance. This is what will happen. The Decider will go around the Congress for funding useing dark sources and stolen oil revenue. This is a run out the clock strategy to get into late 2007 and then claim that a "new" review is going to take place. Little Georgie will then claim that in an election year with a new President coming in it would be wrong to make major changes in a highly political environment and also the new Decider might want to do other things. So Junior will slip off into history to await Fox News and the neocons rewriting history.

I keep hearing about the war on terrorism and Iran financing that war. Take a look at this article.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7119752/
Halliburton operates in Iran despite sanctions
How do U.S. contractors legally do business there?
MARCH 7, 2005
Why should Americans even care if U.S. companies circumvent the sanctions?
"The purpose of these sanctions is to dissuade Iran from supporting terrorism and from seeking to acquire weapons of mass destruction," says Comras.
There's a move in Congress to close the loophole.
"We don't want American companies propping up a government that's dedicated to our destruction," says Sen. Collins.
Halliburton says it is unfairly targeted because of politics, but recently announced it is pulling out of Iran because the business environment "is not conducive to our overall strategies and objectives."
However, that exit will be slow. Halliburton announced it was leaving Iran only three weeks after Iran announced the lucrative new gas deal, which industry sources say will take three years to complete.
------------
Ok, lets do the math. March 2005 to March 2006...that's one year. March 2006 to March 2007...that's 2 years...they have one year left on that deal....hmmmm. Ok so lets see...Cheney is itch'n to get into Iran because Iran is the enemy and his "company" is still doing a deal in Iran.

The only positive thing that can be said about Condi performance is that no matter how much of a mess the Bush Administration has made or how awful Iraq has become she is really one cool cucumber under fire.
To not lose her composure and stay on message regardless of how screwed up that message is or the insurmountable amount of scrambling it must take to explain away the myriad of mistakes she demonstrated remarkable composure.
As a businessman I find this steadiness in the face of adversity quite admirable.

Though I dislike Rice more than I can say, it is Dick Cheney who ruined the State Department. Cheney has always hated the State Department, viewing it as a namby-pamby outfit full of bureaucratic dandies. His hatred of it congealed and turned into a monster during his time as Secretary of Defense. When Cheney wanted guns, saber-rattling and jackboots around the world, the State Department wanted diplomatic negotiations.
Scores of senior State Department officials resigned during the first Bush/Cheney term. They saw that Cheney was out to destroy State and they wouldn't take part in his vision. Cheney created a "Department of Near East Affairs" and installed his daughter Elizabeth as Asst Deputy. The Department of "Near East" Affairs is actually concerned with the Middle East, and involves such things as oil contracts. Big surprise. Elizabeth Cheney acted as her father's eyes and ears at State, reporting back to him and denouncing people whose views differed from Cheney's so Cheney could squash them like bugs.
I have no doubt the ORIGINAL source for the information about Valerie Plame came from Elizabeth Cheney, who ferreted the information out as soon as State Dept employee Joseph Wilson wrote his op ed.
So in Rice's defense, she inherited a demoralized organization whose most experienced members were forced out or resigned rather than be forced out by Dick Cheney. This will all come out in due time.

Because my Friend, George W. Bush is an IDIOT!!!

Besides, and probably more to the point, he HAS to distance himself from this absolute disaster that is Iraq, indeed, the disaster that his whole term as President is.
How else could he be so blind as to what is happening? After an absolute thumping in the election he is still unable to change a thing.
"Stay the course" is about as complicated as it gets in George W. Bush's mind.
If he is forced to answer questions, he is forced to confront his failures.
He is forced to see how the rest of the world sees him, as an incompetent Fool who has done nothing for his country in 6 years of Presidency (except failure after failure). He just might have to realise that he is not a leader and never has been.
He believes he is right in what he is doing because Bush has ALWAYS had people around him laughing at his jokes and agreeing with his every word. (Why do you think he found religion when he stopped drinking? I believe it is so he could remove himself from responsibility. That is after all, the doctrine of AA isn't it?)
He is blaming everyone else for the failure of Iraq and if asked tough questions he would have to realise it is not everyone else at fault, it is HIS FAULT.
Sorry, we were talking about Condi weren't we? Uummm... Yeah, blame her. That's probably what Bush came up with after thinking about Iraq...
...After spending the week at his ranch, and thinking about Iraq for a few minutes over breakfast the President George Bush announced a drastic change in his strategy for Iraq ...Stay the course! and then blame Condi if it isn't all fixed by next week.

Condoleezza Rice has been way over her head from day 1. She was never qualified to hold either of the jobs she has held. The average Joe Canada has as much influence over his government as you or I do, ie approx. none.

Rumsfeld would have stuttered, stammered, twisted in the wind and unleashed innumerable folksy cliches like 'my goodness' or 'henny penny' or 'you need to break a few eggs to make an omelette'.
Cheney would have wigged out, gave a penguin laugh and shot Hagel in the face, told Obama to 'fuck off' and called Kerry a 'coward' and 'flip flopper' before running out of the room to his undisclosed location bunker.
So yes, Condi was very well composed seeing the turd she had to polish.

The other day, my dad said something like, "When I look at her [Condi], I see a person who looks guilty."
Obviously, most of the Bush inner circle doesn't project this as much as Condi. Bush doesn't feel guilt because he's a delusional sociopath who cannot feel the slightest bit of empathy. Cheney is just pure evil and doesn't give a f*ck either way. The rest of them are some combination of Bush's delusion and Cheney's evil. The only other insider whom I think projects at least a little guilt is Gen Pace.

3) Report after report of how the Iraqi police forces have been infiltrated by various groups
4) Iraqi government officials being killed and their families targeted
Now, are we really supposed to believe that our troops or generals are going to feel comfortable enough to hand over weapons and authority to any Iraqi as long as our troops are over there? Condi deserves every bit of "ball-busting" she can get. She's completely worthless and useless. A sad, pathetic replacement for Colin Powell, who, even though he chucked his integrity out the door when selling the war to the UN, at least was a guy who actually tried to bring order and dipomacy to the Bush Administration.
I can't see why ANYONE thinks Condi is a great SecState, NSA or anything. Or even attractive. She hasn't done a damn thing in ANY position she has held except to do what Dick Cheney or GWB tell her.

You can't believe that GWB, that great arse, is going to give up his voodoo charm, do you?
Rice is part of Gw's solace for the pains of commiting hideous and bestial acts. That qualifies her for voodoo doll status.
Kinda puts Katrina (and Haiti) in a whole different light.
As part of the (S)hitehouse Iraq Group, she's a co-conspirator in high crimes against the US.
• Bush's failure to secure and guard Al QaQaa's high-explosives, when they passed into his control, was an act of unprecedented criminal negligence.
Passing out plastique to Iraqis is a very odd method of 'fighting terrorism.'
Arming our soldier's enemies sounds a lot like treason. If it was an accident, it is still criminal negligence, regardless of the 'goals' of GW's 'foreign policy.'
Criminal negligence can't be covered up by insouciance for long. What's his voodoo doll going to do? Take out her teeth and let them chatter across the table? She might just as well give birth to a live goat in the hearing room.

This woman is inept and shouldn't be in her cabinet position. Now I will tell you why. Yesterday I heard her say as a rebuttal to a mention of negotiating with Iran.... "Iran just wants to exercise extortion". Of course I paraphrase but you get the jist. Extortion? She is not secretary of state material. Anyone who has ever done international diplomatic negotiations (especially to try to bring about peace treaties) knows that each nation has certain things that they bring to the table. What Rice calls extortion is probably a bargaining chip for another country. If you want to use the word extortion in international negotiations you have ruined the negotiation process before it ever began. If this is the standard then you could easily say at the end of world war two we then extorted peace from Japan. We offered them no more atom bombs and a rebuilding process for a peace treaty. Get real. Does this woman want a negotiating process with Iran or is she shooting it down before it ever gets started. The other problem is her attitude. She really seemed "put off" to have to answer questions in front of congress. If she is so put off just for this, you can imagine how put off she would be to have to negotiate a peace with people she doesn't agree with on much of anything. Resign Rice do us all a favor. Go buy some shoes.

The neo-cons would like to sanitize the vocabulary of war. Words like escalate and redeploy have clear military connotations and are precise. Words like surge and augment are imprecise in the context for which the White House would like them echoed in the Press. For that reason such terms should not be used in any context to discuss military strategy.

Condi is such a polished, willful and easy liar. But then, she is a Straussian acolyte and tjus feels justified. Wouldn't take a whole lot of work to build perjury cases against her.

Isn't it appropriate for Rice to use the term "augmentation"? The term is most commomly used with the inflation of boobs.

While appreciate the ass whoopin that Condi got, I don't understand why Bush and Cheney don't get the same treatment. And I don't want to hear this, "he's the president" crap. He's the President, not the king (although he would like to think so) He works for us and is accountable to us. I don't give a damn if his feelings are hurt.

Our favorite BULLDOG senator, Boxer, may have gone "over the top" when she passionately personalized Rice's lack of deep understanding of the loss felt by "families" who have lost loved ones...BUT, the point remains that so many in this administration have felt littler PERSONAL pain over their devious decisions and policies in regard to the INVASION of Iraq!!! Still, Rupert Murdock, FAUX NEWS, and the rightwing blogosphere now has another focus to rant on about to further distract the American people (so easily led astray) from the REAL ISSUES needing their attention. Works every time...Boxer and others must learn to use their words better!!!

I feel much better now knowing it's just an "augmentation" and not an "escalation" as I had originally feared. Now that I know that, I think Bush's new strategy is just peachy!

Yes, I guess it is...
Well, guess what??? It ain't flyin.... And, looks like no more softball questions and free passes for you little Ms. 'I'm a Stanford gal intellectual muckity-muck'.... Something tells me things are only going to get worse from here on for you Ms. Rice... Don't think your little legacy is going to work out any better than your bosses... Maybe you should invest in one of those online gambling courses the next time you're thinking of putting significant chips down on some horse... The one you put your money on this time is not going place or show let alone win anything other than derision and quite possibly some jail time somewhere down the road.......JD

I love Keith O. and all, but I wish his commentaries weren't so long and spoken with such a high level of vitriol. He's beginning to sound like a scold, and nobody likes a scold. Edward R. Murrow spoke fighting words, but he was still calm, cool and collected.
Also drop the "..., Sir,...". Bush should not be granted that much dignity.

The New York Post has an editorial screaming bloody murder about Sen. Barbara Boxer's supposed "slur" against Condi Rice.
Here's the editorial --
And here's the Letter To the Editor I wrote in response (though fat lot of good it will do):
Dear NY Post,
I find it refreshing that you would focus so much attention on the perceived slur or insult that Sen. Barbara Boxer supposedly leveled against Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice.
Certainly, it is important that we not allow slurs, insults, hatemongering and smear to be the language of politics.
Unfortunately, the Republican Party, and the New York Post, have both used insult, smear and slurs constantly in their political games. The New York Post alone probably calls Sen. Hillary Clinton a nasty name once or twice per issue! I suppose that's in bounds?
Why is it that Republicans, who made "swiftboating" a household word, who make jokes about how Chelsea Clinton was "the White House dog" and all the Botox that Nancy Pelosi has had injected, have such thin skins when it comes to someone making fun of them? Why is it only a terrible crime against humanity when the victim has an "R" after their name?
Please answer this important question for me, because right now, it just sounds like more double-standard Republican hypocrisy.

She did not go over the top. She included herself in the childless category when she asked the question.
I hear Gw is also childless.

Boxer over the top??? I heard her comments...No, she wasn't over the top... Sometimes when I post, I'm over the top. Most times talk radio is over the top with one sided rightwing hate though if KSFO is any indication, that might just change...
Boxer however wasn't over the top, she brought a certain levity and reality to that whole lame 'Condi presents her latest plea for leeway, money and entreaties not to pay attention to the man behind the curtin' show she likes to trot out periodically...
Frankly she is becoming a one note piano player and the tune is sounding more and more off key.....JD

I saw the Boxer/Condi confrontation. Once again, only conservatives can find fault in Boxer's statement. She was not "over the top". The only thing over the top is the phony outrage by people who deliberately misinterpret, misunderstand, or take the statements out of context.
