How long are all these pundits and politicians going to cling to the framing that this "war" is America's to win or lose.
Chuck Hagel pretty much gets it when he talks about the conflict in Iraq as being a tribal, sectarian civil war. If the media can reject the frame of "victory" and "defeat, we might have a level chance of actually having a dialogue in this country. I'm not holding my breath... but there's a chance.
And by the way, doesn't it look like Hagel may be the Last Man Standing on the Republican side for '08, after the surge fails and McCain implodes? Is Hagel "Christian enough" to get the nomination? I know nothing about the man.

Thank you Chuck Hagel, Ass-kissing Joe took his head out of his ass just in time to hear the truth.
"I am not nor is anyone in Congress abdicating defeat, that's ridiculous and I'm offended that any responsible member of Congress would suggest such a thing."
If Hagel had only included everyone in the Bush administration with this comment.

Support the surge. Send the twins! Send the Lieberman children, grandchildren, and nephews, too! Send Tony Snow's kids.
When will our leader's offspring lead our country into battle? The hawks have cut & run from joining the fight.
Give the President a million dollars for every relative of his staff signs up to go to Iraq. Otherwise, he's gets nada.

As a fellow Nebraskan, I am extremely pleased to see this. Almost every day it seems in our public pulse section in our newspaper, citizens of Nebraska say Hagel is merely posturing for a presidential bid. They can't face the facts, they can't face reality. As of 6 or so months ago, we were 1 of 4 states that still had a 50%+ approval rating of President Bush.

I am not going to get into all the moral and ethical issues about why we should or should not attack Iran. I am sure there are arguments for both sides of that idea. I am simply going to say this. Even if we had just cause, even if we have a problem with Iran in the region, even if we Iran was an imminent threat. How in the FUCK! would we ever pay for such an action? Given the fact that we have just blown over 400 billion dollars for nothing in Iraq. How?

Sunday. January 14. Critics won't halt Iraq surge, Bush says.
Bush, facing opposition from both parties over his plan to send more troops to Iraq, said he has the authority to act no matter what Congress wants.
Like Bush, though, Cheney braced Americans to frame the war in Iraq as part of a much longer effort.
"This is an existential conflict," Cheney said. "It is the kind of conflict that's going to drive our policy and our government for the next 20 or 30 or 40 years. We have to prevail and we have to have the stomach for the fight long term."

Oh. My. God. Joe's little fear-mongering speech makes his fellow Connecticutians look even stupider for reelecting him. Holy Joe's sounding even more out in space that Bush. Unbelievable. The stinking ugly rhetoric spewing from Joe's mouth -- does HE even believe it? It's ridiculous. Hagel is one of the few Republicans who -- I have to admit -- is sounding intelligent about the war effort.
Joe, you're pathetic! If 2/3 of Americans oppose the war plans, MAYBE you should CONSIDER that you're doing SOMETHING wrong? This is a democracy, asshole!

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.
We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

Lieberman is doing the same thing as the neoconservatives and demagogues, which is conflating 9/11 with [allegedly] fighting the terrorists in Iraq. What Hagel did not bring up is that the terrorists or outside forces who are aligned against the U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq number only 2 per cent of those who are fighting in Iraq. Again, that number is not 92 per cent but rather two [2] per cent. It is the presence of the U.S. military that is causing the violence in Iraq. Both Hagel and Lieberman bring up the words victory and defeat in Iraq which, as Hagel should be well aware of, are also the same words that were used duting the Vietnam war. The United States did not belong in Vietnam and does not now belong in Iraq. Those troops should be withdrawn forthwith from Iraq and the region. If not, more American troops will become cannon fodder for a decidedly less than noble cause.

It has been important because Western countries (Britain, the US, France) continue to f*ck around in their governments in order to gain control of OIL!!
Lieberman says, "...they get frustrated, they get angry... I wish what they did is got angry because those suicide bombings of people signing up to be Iraqi police officers shows how evil the enemy is..."
Evil? That's not evil! Infiltration and subtrefuge are parts of WAR. Western governments send in spies, infiltrators and provocateurs to other countries all the time to disrupt governments, foment revolt, etc.

I will say this.... Both our presidential administration and our congress failed us when they gave that vote for authorization to use force. Doing so was much akin to pulling a gun and instead of shooting someone with it you stand there and beat them with it. From now on it should be a declaration of war or not. Nothing in between. That way the world and the american people know that we are serious about what we are doing and we would then be willing to sacrifice what is necessary to see it through to an end.

The war in Afghanistan was just. The execution of it wasn't. We should never have started with Iraq. The Bush administration began diverting funds from the Afghan war to Iraq almost from the day the Afghan war was started. I dont need to go on to list all the reason why that should never have been done but rest assured, without the necessary forces and funds that is why the poppy production skyrocketed.

Joe repeated Bush's point in his speach that this is an unconventional war. There aren't tanks, and ships, etc. As Bush said in his speach, there will be no concession ceremony. So Joe says that there are only two ways out-victory or defeat. Why can he not realize that black and white way of thinking doesn't apply in a war that both he and his hero W have both said isn't conventional.
In a grey war the "victory" is going to be a grey as well.

However, I'm still thankful that someone with Hagel's debating skills and quasi-gravitas is attempting to steer us away from the cliff, whereas Joe wants to push everyone over the cliff.

The white house did concede that point about 9/11 and then continued to use it. Lieberman is going to wish in short order that he hadn't been re-elected. He's already being told to STFU among some members of congress. Hagel may as well as said it in this clip. Hagel is more critical (and correct) than Lieberman. He always has been. Lieberman is truly delusional. In some strange way, Lieberman is becoming isolated. Reid and Pelosi haven't backed down from their criticism, and the country hasn't either. So Lieberman's attempt to undermine the Dems aren't really working. It's just about him getting air time and how important he is.

Joe Lieberman was a "Civil Rights advocate" and an anti-war protestor during the Vietnam war era who got three deferments to go to college. When it was his time to fight for America during Vietnam, Joe Lieberman took the cowards way out as Chuck Hagel fought there. Yes, as Hagel was fighting in Vietnam Joe Lieberman was filling out deferment paper work. Lieberman needs to get a uniform and get some training and go fight in Iraq against those "terrorists" he never really precisely defines as none of the other idiots do either. "Terrorists" they say, and I say nothing but "strawmen," to further their hegemomnic agenda over the world.
Many of these Israeli firsters like Joe Lieberman and others in his generation were indeed critics of Nixon and the involvement in Vietnam as well as "marchers for Civil Rights" yet are war mongers who have racist attitudes against Arabs in the 21st Century.
Chuck Hagel is someone worth listening to when it comes to war because he unlike McCain has not been bought off by Lieberman's crowd who are close to being the Nazis of the 21st century. Lieberman in my opinion is a good fascist-totalitarian along with his other Zionist pals.
Chuck Hagel is an American firster while Bush, Cheney, and Lieberman are sick psychopaths. We will all get to see the anti-American and anti-Constitutional President Bush tonight on 60 Minutes where he says that Congress does not matter since he is the new Fuhrer of America.
I hate to break it to all of you but we are living under totalitarian rule with an out-of-control Executive which is acting like Hitler and that King of England which Thomas Paine warned everyone about. Bush is yes, acting like a dictator and I am not being dramatic but Bush & Cheney have continually walked all over the constitution and the weak Congress and the weakish American people have allowed this tragedy to occur and before you know it another war will make America even less free and less democratic as further powers will be granted and more rights taken away.

One other note to make--Jon Kyl and Joe Lieberman wrote an Op-Ed article together a year or two ago together in the Washington Post and both are in the Committee on Present Danger with George Schultz the head man of this group. It is too bad that Meet the Pentagon anchor Russert failed to mention this very significant fact that Lieberman and Kyl serve in this establishment organization which devises war schemes. Anyone who thinks truth or doing a really good job of reporting should be reminded that omissions are also lies and misleading America into thinking it put on a "balanced program." Many of these types of organizations exist in Washington, D.C. but out of the purview of the general public. But Jon Kyl and Lieberman are in this group together it should be noted that the phony appearance and phony claims made this morning by Russert's main premise of contrasting these four Senators was totally dishonest and totally distorted and the American people are owed better than Tim Russert's propaganda nonsense from this morning.

what they dont do is blindly support bush and his policies.
lieberman is not doing what he does becuase he is a zionist
he is doing what he does because he is who he is....a wingnut in dem clothing....always has been

Scary thing is, considering we might have gotten Lieberman as a Vice President, it's the ONLY thing that makes Bush winning in 2000 a halfway good thing. (read: I would rather have your sons and grandsons die than my sons and grandsons)
This asshole is spouting pure fiction. He says that we're fighting the same people who attacked us on 9/11 and that they are supported by Iran. Iran and the perpetrators of 9/11 are on opposite ends of the Islamic political and theological scale. If this is Lieberman's "sense of history", then maybe he also thinks that the Minutemen were fighting an occupying Irish-Catholic redcoat army.

Is any one really supprised that Lieberman is pushing Isreals agenda?
Hes been voting republican since he was elected as a democrat.
I'm, just waiting for his family values to kick in, when he leaves his wife to marry Ann Coulter, supports big pharma with major purchases of viagra, and impregnates coulter with an isreali/christofacist hellspawn.

I doubt Lieberman is pushing for the Israeli agenda. He is a traitor to the world including his own in Israel.
He is a pious looking evil self-righteous bigot who is a narcissistic want to control the world. He has lied about 9/11, iraq war, and his own election. I am sure he stole that election.
Why did he change his role to the Independent democratic party? Who ever appointed as the Chairman of the Homeland Security?
Are you folks that naive about Lieberman's role in this mafia govt.?
In my view, he is dangerous. If you do not support his agenda, he is going to the pious Vatican Pope to destroy the world...

"He's even more offensive today than usual if that's possible because he uses the 9/11 attacks and says we're fighting the same enemy in Iraq that attacked our country. He knows that's a right wing talking point that's just not true—yet he'll try to scare people anyway, Shame on you!"
Actually Whiny Joe's right this time. Now we are fighting the same people in Iraq that attacked us on 9/11. Before the war Al Queda wasn't in Iraq but they are now thanks to the Bush gang.
Lieberman speaks of his children and grand children. I wonder if any of Lieberman's children or grandchildren are serving in the Bush/McCain/Lieberman war? My guess is no. It's easy for a chickenhawk to stay the course when they or their kids aren't picking up rifles and heading to the front lines. Draft Lieberman's kids, Mary Cheney, the Bush twins and the children of the stay the course Republicans and "the surge" would immediately change to "declare victory and go home" within a week.
One might say Mary Cheney was a Vietnam baby considering she was born 9 months and 2 days after the being married without kids would get you sent to Vietnam. The married with child deferment was Chickenhawk Cheney's 5th Vietnam deferment. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/05/

I must be watching a different clip, because I don't see where Hagel "bitchslapped" anybody. Yeah, he kinda, sorta used some strong words to indicate he has an "honest disagreement" with Lieberman. I didn't hear him take Lieberman to task for using that discredited GOP talking point that equated Iraqis with 9/11. What I did hear was Hagel using that same line of bullshit used by hawks - GOP and Democrat alike: that the Civil War in Iraq is a problem for the IRAQIS to fix. Uh, no, because there wouldn't be a Civil War if we hadn't invaded the fucking country in the first place. I refuse to start believing that things are changing for the better until I hear at least ONE of our so called "leaders" go before the American people and own up to 2 things: 1)The mess in Ifaq is OUR fault and that this will never, EVER, happen again; 2)The United States will seek the assistance of the international community to stop the bloodshed in Iraq. I'm not holding my breath. So Hagel says some pointed comments - big fucking deal! As far as I'm concerned, he's just another in a long line of GOP rats abandoning the sinking ship known as the Bush Administration.

So, in Leiberman's mind there's only victory and defeat? JESUS CHRIST!. He's willing to sacrifice some other lives for victory. You know you're messed up when a Republican, regardles if he's moderate, thinks you're full of it.
Then he has the nerve to bring his kids/grandkids into it. I'm sure he's not asking them to make a sacrifice and sign up for duty.

Technically, I think we are now fighting the same terrorists that attacked us on 9/11... because we created an environment from which they can cause problems... A whole country that was closed to them is now a place where they can run rampant.
But, that the hell... as the President said last night, the Iraqi's own as a debt of graditude for turning their country into a shooting gallery and bombing them back to the stone age.

Even though Hagel has no business being in the Senate (we all know about his Diebold corporate connection), I can't find anything with to disagree with here. He comes right out and calls it a civil war. He reminds us that it's Shias killing Shias and that we'd be better off protecting the borders so the Iraqis can hash out their differences internally.
Of course, what Hagel also could've said is that the border is porous because we'd disbanded the Iraqi military, who later became the very insurgents that we're even now fighting.
Lieberman was revealed to be the asshat that he is and, as the Carpetbagger Report says, Hagel's words had extra heft because he is a conservative Republican.
