I loved Colbert's shiv-in-the-back question "What other cultural editing notes should we take from the terrorists?"

And of course, D'Souza didn't seem to sense the irony of it.
.

Colbert to Ponnuru:

"You got a great blurb on the cover from Ann Coulter. That's some credibility right there."

Brilliant.

The Washington Post review of the book is brutal.
"The worst nonfiction book about terrorism published by a major house since 9/11."

Gravatar How these idiots come up with this shit just blows my mind, the publishing companies are such tools of the nutty wingnuts, delusional crap posing as intellectual well though out commentary, what a joke these authors of trash are.

Gravatar Oops here is the link to the review.

Gravatar You know you're pathetic when you have trouble even agreeing to the subtitle of your own book.

Colbert hammered him till he felt forced to agree.

Pathetic really.

Gravatar i truly don't know how colbert does it, he is beyond human. one-step further down the evolutionary path, if you will (intelligent design dodos need not comment).

if i were colbert i would have bitch slapped that fuck for trying to pin 9/11 on... who? liberals?? that's it you anti-intellectual fuck i'm coming across the table...

Gravatar Umm Samson he DID bitch slap him... verbally

Gravatar I can't even watch this. These wingnut authors are so totally bizarre. Our society has become so totally insane it hurts to even contemplate the thought that even one of these jokers could write this sort of book and actually SELL it!

Gravatar D'Souza not getting what Colbert is doing to him is great.
Par for the course for a member of the irony deaf Corner.

Gravatar Dinesh D'Souza is a yutz. May all his teeth except one fall from his head... and that one? It should have a toothache.

Gravatar Man, now Dinesh'll have to run off and have Rich Little interview him....

yup, this is the best they have (other than the einsteins that were the [lack of] brains behind the iraq clusterfuck).

oh yeah and '24'

they LUV to point to the commercial success of '24' and claim that it supports their torture-friendly, congress-no-where-to-be-seen ideology. hee hee, they are pointing to a fox show as indication of the efficacy of their unconstitutional principles. the jokes write themselves~

Gravatar I love the fact that someone finally had the guts to write a book giving me credit for insiting Bin Laden to attack America.

I really thought no one would ever notice.

Gravatar Does anyone else think D'Souza's voice sounds more female than male?

Gravatar Isn't this hackademic.

'COLBERT (re: 9/11): But is all the responsibility Carter and Clinton’s?
Doesn’t some of it lie at FDR’s doorstep? Doesn’t things like Social Security and Medicare and LBJ’s Great Society, doesn’t some of that send the wrong message to our enemies, that America cares about domestic issues and not just about foreign policy?

D’SOUZA: Indirectly, yes, here’s why. (snip)...FDR gave away Eastern Europe through Yalta, and then the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, the Muslims had to fight back and that’s where bin Laden got his start.'

...and deadpan irony snakebites yet another blinkered ideologue.

Golly gee, D'Souza, using your 'scholarly' logic,

(using 'scholarly' in the sense of 'Look at this fresh gold nugget I pulled out of my ass...The fact that it is a suspicious shade of brown affects its gold-like status not one bit')

...Prescott Bush, supporting the Nazis financially as he and his family did before and during WWII was the modern state of Israel's BFF for doing his part to drive so many of the Chosen People out of icky old Germany into the Promised Land, and cull the herd of those weaklings who remained.

Perhaps a posthumous Freedom medal is in order.

Meanwhile, keep putting the ass in assclown, Dinesh.

Gravatar It's in these kind of situations, interviewing truly benighted idealogue wingnuts like this putz and William Kristol, that Colbert really flexes his muscles. Hilarious, in a "cat toying with mouse" kind of way...

Gravatar I guess he and his publisher subscribes to the Limbaughesque version of fact checking, as in 'None.'

Gravatar This guy keeps repeating the same old line that Clinton did nothing about terror threats.

Yeah, like how Clinton did nothing about the Cole. So what message did we send the terrorists when Reagan did nothing about the Marines barracks bombing in Lebanon in 1983? I mean, that was the original cut-and-run right there.

And that crap about how Carter 'pulled the persian rug' out from under the Shah... (D'Souza thinks he's clever) I was alive then. That is utter rubbish. There was no way we could keep the Shah in power short of sending in tanks and troops. What handed Iran to the mullahs was the US/UK coup in 1953 which installed the Shah in the first place.

And why does D'Souza love brutal dictators so much? That's what the Shah was.

Gravatar The usual cult mind controlling misdirection bullshit-- "the liberals didn't kill a bunch of people after the Cole like WE would have done, so they are at fault for 911"...

The definitive report on the Cole blaming Al Qaeda was given to Cheney Bush and THEY DID NOTHING!!!!

From the WP via AmericaBlog.

At least twice, Bush conveyed the message to the Taliban that the United States would hold the regime responsible for an al Qaeda attack. But after concluding that bin Laden's group had carried out the October 2000 attack on the USS Cole – a conclusion stated without hedge in a Feb. 9 briefing for Vice President Cheney – the new administration did not choose to order armed forces into action.

It is quite obvious how under control the cult of conservatism is. They are incapable of absorbing facts. Facing reality that conflicts with the cult's conditioned hate talk radio world view is not allowed - the same way every cult operates and relates to the world.

While we're at it, what did the patron saint of bobbleheads, Reagan, do after the Marine barracks were bombed killing 241 marines? The "tough" conservative God ran away with his tail between his legs and found little Grenada to beat up on so the cult could have some diversion to control their minds. Damn blind controlled fools. Some believe Iran was involved in the barracks bombing. Reagan gave them cruise missiles for their troubles.

Consevatives are dishonest, deceptive, just like cults.

Seriously. He does. Honest.
And it's up to him to prove to us that he isn't a terrorist, and even then, I won't believe him.

Gravatar ...and deadpan irony snakebites yet another blinkered ideologue.

Well, Colbert had D'Souza on the run already at that point, D'Souza skipped over a lot there but basically neo-cons love to chant "Yalta! Yalta!" as the original cold-war 'stab in the back'.

What is it with right-wingers and their love of historical revisionism? Yalta was a great accomplishment for Roosevelt. The truth was the war-weary Allies were in no position to wage yet another European land war against the Soviets to throw them out of the eastern Europe which they possessed already at the time, and which they'd paid for with the blood of a generation of young men.

Plus, at the time Uncle Joe was still our ally and there was reasonable hope that the USSR could be cooperated with. The Republicans were in on the Yalta deal and none of them complained at the time. If Yalta was a bad deal, then the Republicans were/are just as complicit as the Democrats.

Gravatar "Dinesh D'Souza LOOKS LIKE A TERRORIST."

BTW Thanks Siteowner.

Gravatar Excuse me, Carter had nothing to do with the Iranian Revolution. The Shah (whom the CIA returned to power in 1952 by overthrowing Mossadegh; the elected Prime Minister of Iran's first democratic government) was overthrown by increasing popular protest resulting in his fleeing the country. It wasn't until Kissinger and others convinced President Carter to let him come to the United States that the embassy hostages were taken in Iran. Also, if the Islamofascists hate our liberal culture so much why don't they bomb Holland or Norway instead of London and New York? It's our foreign policies that most people of the world hate, not our culture. Also, has this asshole ever heard about the Downing Street memo?
I've never come so close to ripping my laptop apart in rage before as just now watching this ignorant piece of shit jerk-off. Where do they come from?

Gravatar So his thesis is that we're being targeted because we aren't old fashioned and traditional enough, repressive enough, patriarchal enough toward women, and so on, and then prescribes that we must become these things, to avoid it?

Dinesh D'Souza belongs in GITMO with the other terrorists.

Jon and Stephen, you boys keep fighting the good fight. It's funny and inspiring.

Gravatar This is great clip. Every question Colbert asked show he has read D'Souza and understood that this man is actually opposed to Liberty and Freedom except where they abet established power and wealth.

I get furious that people like D'Souza get away with their claims that "the Left" (conveniently never defined) is to blame for:

- the decline of the nuclear family

- the so-called depravity of Hollywood films and popular culture in general

- terrorism

- homosexuality

It's all such bullshit, and these assholes are never challenged by the so-called liberal MSM.

- In regard to the decline of the nuclear family: this is happening everywhere, in every country. Nowhere moreso than in traditional cultures in developing countries, where big business is taking root. China and India are great examples. Nobody in their right mind would claim that the economic/social upheavals that are transforming these two countries before our eyes represent Leftism or Socialism or Liberalism. The family is under assault in our world - no question. Capitalism, not Leftism, is the culprit.

- Popular Culture may or may not be depraved - if that's your opninion, fine - but it is , it ain't due to "Leftism". The movie studios, TV networks and record companies are all HUGE businesses, which in the past 20 years have integrated, merged and exploited new technology and political influence for massive profits. These sharks are NOT, by any stretch of the imagination, "Leftists". Janet Jackson's tit is not a threat to American virtue. It's a convenient excuse to further colonize the airwaves for the profit of Fox, Time Warner, Disney and the rest.

- Terrorism is the result of "Leftism"? Looniness. D'Souza has the gall to blame Bin Laden on Jimmy Carter!! Carter was a peacemaker, the last president to broker a lasting peace in the Middle East. The Shah was a vicious despot, worse than Saddam for brutality and torture. He was installed by the CIA after a US-backed coup against an elected Prime Minister. D'Souza is a deluded liar who purposefully ignores US complicity in fascism.

Why does no one question the obvious limitations and contradictions implicit in what this fascist says? D'Souza and his ilk have been left unanswered and undebated for far too long.

Anyhow, I'm not surprised another "IT'S ALL TEH LIBRULZ FAULT" right-wing hack gets pwned. That's what they do - they write a hateful diatribe, get it published by right-wing printing houses, go on right-wing media to get their customary right-wing fellatio from the simpering troglodytes of the wingnut media, then go somewhere they think they can win - against someone who has their head outside of their own rectum. And they get smacked down like they ought to.

Then they throw a tantrum about "OMGZ TEH LIBRUL MEDIA IS CENSORING MEEEEE!!!!1", conveniently packaged in their next hateful diatribe, and the cycle begins anew.

Gravatar So is his answer that we become more restrictive like strict Islamic countries?

We erode our own freedoms, and embrace the fundamentalist ideology?

But won't that just EMBOLDEN the radicals to make MORE attacks? After all, they'd see their attacks as helping to convert the world to their ideology.

Gravatar SJD | 01.17.07 - 5:57 pm | #

Not all, just the pundits and the smug Neocons who graduated from right-wing colleges in the 80's when Reagan was putting Conservatism into action.

D'Souza is a 1983 graduate of Dartmouth and editor of the Dartmouth Review, when that school was a breeding ground for far-right ideologues. Laura Ingraham was there at the same time. These collegiate Neoclone railed against affirmatve action, civil rights laws, voter registration laws, feminism and other leftist plots. Fuck them all.

Gravatar Damian - your petty insults are pitiful at best. You're intellectually lazy at worst. How dare you call me a little boy? Do you know who you are talking to?

Gravatar If that exchange were a Little League game, the producers would have invoked the mercy rule within the first two minutes!

Colbert was totally working D'Souza over, and he didn't even realize how brutal a bitchslap he was receiving. Then again, D'Souza is a clueless moron, even by wingnut standards (and that's saying a lot). He doesn't need an avalanche of scathing book reviews or embarassing TV appearances, so much as he needs an intervention. Anyone who views the world the way that he does has got to be on something.

D'Souza also wrote a book back in the 90s called "The End of Racism" where (as the title implies) he argued that racism no longer exists. While other affirmative action opponents argued on grounds of fairness and whether such programs were accomplishing their intended goals, D'Souza argued against AA by simply denying the very existence of racism. So, he's every bit as delusional now as he was back then.

Between D'Souza, Thomas Sowell, Michelle Malkin, Shelby Steele, and their ilk, the wingnuts always like to trot out the token "brown" people to provide cover for their moronic missives. Too bad D'Souza seems to be more of an embarassment than anything.

Gravatar goatsage,
That's Cobert's version. Dinesh D'Souza's version is that liberals eat maggots and promote the videos on TV. I do take exception to that because the Republicans own all the TV stations and they want to do everything on the cheap so they put on shows like the ones described. They find some idiot broke enough to compete for money by eating maggots. As a liberal, I refuse to take responsibility for such a middle school concept. When the adults take control of the TV landscape I'll start watching again.

I think that conservative knuckle-draggers are all over that "Survivor" crap.

Kinda like when Rosanne Barr did the National Anthem, what geniuses signed her up for that.

Gravatar Who buys this shit?

Haters, baiters, reich-wing blowhards, insecure fundamentalists, FOX news viewers, to name a few...

Gravatar Jake,
The uneducated buy the books and set them on their shelves. No wait a minute...they buy Rush's book because he's so manly and they put it on their shelf or coffeetable.

Gravatar mellowjohn,

You are underestimating Colbert's popularity and the overriding need of these people to sell some books. They go on these shows to sell their books, and they know they're going to get lambasted. They don't care.

Gravatar Marcos,
I was in a bookstore one day and I asked a clerk why Ann Coulter was getting so much space. He told me they had no control over it but then whispered. "It's not sellng."

I doubt very seriously if this one is either.

Gravatar "Conspiracy theories are a form of neurosis. A conspiracy theorist is one who cannot handle the mental strain of a complex world, and so neurotically constructs an even more complex explanation for events."

Sounds like you've invented a reason for yourself to not examine the evidence.

What's your stance on JFK, RFK, Gulf of Tonkin, or even Iran-Contra for that matter? It's a strange world out there, especially when it comes to blatant cover-ups.

Anyway, I said I'm not gonna post of this topic here anymore out of the respect for the mods on this board, but you people keep egging me on and I'm forced to defend myself. What do you want?

"The Return of the King"? Uh oh.

Gravatar LOL! So funny that this D'Nesh loves the type of America that would call him a "sand monkey!"

Gravatar I'm not sure where the line gets drawn between exposing lies and misdeeds and subscribing to wacky theories, but if you are using the Gulf of Tonkin Incident to support your theory of 9/11, I think you've crossed that line.

Gravatar I am disappointed that Colbert didn't ask D'Souza whether he had [deleted]

Sycophants (and foreigners) like D'souza have no idea what American values are. You need to grow up in America and be taught by an American father who has experienced life in this country. You need to know what made the USA great.

Gravatar What a ridiculous statement!

Hillary Clinton and slave owners of the 1800s...both equally dangerous!

Gravatar I think in years to come, we'll learn more about 911 than we know now. Look how much has come to light about the Holocaust in the past 60 years?!!!
Darth_Cheney

That's a reasonable statement.

Gravatar ooh I've got another one:

maggot eating fags and Alberto Gonzalez...both equally dangerous

Gravatar if the left decadent lifestyle of moral decay was the reason why we were attack, then why does Usama Bin Laden appeal to the common people of the USA of the danger of Bush and corruption of his leadership? Usama was very specific about the Bush administration policy in the middle east.

I think they are both irresponsible in allowing the people get caught in the middle of their wars, being said that they were both born with a silver spoon and have high disregard to human life.

Gravatar Peepers,

If Beto was a maggot eating faggot, would the danger be additive or multiplicative?

Yes, I know, it's a scary thought.

Gravatar . Wow. D'Souza has always been a hack, but at one point, he pretended to be an intellectual. At this point only the jacket and the fancy institutional title remain. In the advance excerpts of his book and in this segment he rivals Coulter, or the Bob Dole of "Democrat wars." Rabidly partisan, truth be damned. Conservatives really have no wonks left, only hacks. And isn't it shameful that anyone subsidizes a man of such profound idiocy, obtuseness, and hatred?

Colbert was astounding throughout, but getting D'Souza on the record near the end was exactly the sort of thing we need done by every "real" interviewer.

Also, since D'Souza was one of the pioneering hacks for the War on Political Correctness, it's interesting he's essentially arguing against freedom of choice and expression in American culture here. I'll have to do some more research, but I thought D'Souza at one point bleeted a few libertarian lines. His rhetoric now goes far beyond merely bemoaning the state of culture - it's pretty fascist. It seems he's always been a social control freak, another "culture warrior," and the freedom stuff was just a smokescreen, but I'd welcome some more links on him...

Gravatar This guy keeps repeating the same old line that Clinton did nothing about terror threats. I wish Colbert had asked him about the wingnuts that said Clinton was wagging the dog and how many argued in favor of legislation to get out of Somalia.
Vic | 01.17.07 - 5:18 pm |

Bush's own investigators admitted that there were no WMDs in Iraq because the "wag the dog" strike at the end of his administration got the last of them, and Saddam gave up on the project.

The NeoCons willfully get the timeline wrong, and ignore their own logic. They like to quote Clinton for credibility in that "even Clinton threatened Saddam about WMDs" and then in the next breathe say; "he didn't take it seriously." While eventually talking about Clinton being a warmonger because he blew up Baby-food factories.

Here is what happened;
Following good intelligence, Clinton warned Saddam about his weapons development program.
Saddam ignored him, hoping he didn't know where it was.
Clinton gave the order for a group of cruise missiles to hit the site.
Republicans blame Clinton for "wag the dog" to distract people during their important Monica-gate investigation.
Saddam shuts down weapons development.

Later, after 9/11, Bush NeoCons gets Lincoln Group and others (being paid by government funds for propaganda -- but he is careful to site sources outside US) -- especially news organizations in Australia, start putting out WMD information, based upon wishful thinking.

So yes, Clinton was for the idea of WMDs before he was against them... mainly because they were destroyed. It makes more sense if you put it on a timeline.

Though Clinton didn't get much sleep, and he was continually hounded... he took care of the People's business. Though I didn't much care for some of his Corporate policies -- I have to respect him for never dropping the ball in fulfilling his duties for office. Bush doesn't even know where the ball is.

We need numbers, and its a great way to meet people instead of watching TV.

Gravatar Ahh, Ann Coulter's old college boyfriend shows just how retarded the entire neocon way of thinking truly is. "We stopped supporting the Shah.."

How ludicrous, we INSTALLED the Shah by deposing the popularly elected socialist Mohammed Mossadegh in 1953's Operation Ajax, once he began talking about nationalizing Iran's oil industry. And then, after decades of repression by the 'western-minded' puppet Shah, Iranians revolted by following radical mullahs, who were the only entity the Shah couldn't quietly murder.

And D'Souza blows right by all that, and blames it on Carter. Stellar thinking....for a 3rd grader. Proof positive that a Harvard degree means zilch.

Gravatar Colbert put the shiv in exactly where it would do the most damage. D'Souza and his ilk want to say intemperate things without being called intemperate. They want to put forth uncivil rhetoric without being accused of incivility.

Ol' Steven reminded Dinesh that he can't have it both ways. Brilliant.

Gravatar VitriolAndAngst | 01.17.07 - 8:01 pm |

You're absolutely correct. I believe that the Clinton administration would already have gotten Bin Laden through the use of investigative and military tactics.

Relative to Clinton, Bush seems like a 15 year-old who's doing his chores because he has to or he won't get his allowance. It just kills red-staters that their boy has screwed the pooch so bad; and they'll never admit that the republicans' Monica-gate damaged our country and Clinton's ability to focus on Bin Laden (which he was trying to do).

The good news is that Bush/Cheneyburton have completely blown their own credibility out of the water. Many red-staters are starting to come around; but they just won't say it out loud because they ignorantly think it's patriotically weak.

...

Gravatar Thanks to all for the insight.

Gravatar D'Souza so had his ass handed to him. Colbert was merciless. Good for him. And thanks to the C&L site team for toasting 9/11 insanity.

Gravatar Point/Counterpoint is nice, but there was one thing my high school debate coach kept repeating; always look for a reductio ad absurdam opportunity in your opponent's logic. Find it, trace it out, make your opponent eat it in cross-x or rebuttal, and the match was yours.

Colbert is a master.

Gravatar Conservatives are soooooo damn pathetic and dumb. The more we hear from them and confront them the better!!

Gravatar As a liberal/progressive with a wife, two kids, a dog, a mortgage, etc. I find it truly strange to hear that I am a source of moral decay because I advocate universal health care, tolerance, diversity, equal opportunity, education, etc. Why exactly does that make folks like bin Laden want to strike out and get us?

The idiots that spout such nonsense obviously have a readership that is either willfully ignorant or so hateful that the most rudimentary elements of reason have been banished from their minds.

Gravatar I can't believe he would even think 9/11 was done by liberal influences in this country. That sickens me. Everyone knows Osama did it all from his location in Afghanistan and his minions. Geez. This guy sickens me.

Gravatar more proof conservatives would bend over backwards to give the terrorists anything they want.

Aw, they don't like homos and Hollywood? Better change, America, or we're under attack again.

Gravatar Yep, just like the rightwingnuts. Blame the liberal. Yet it is the extremist regilion that has the world in a uproar.

Gravatar Not even the liberals could pull off something so heiness. Only cave men in Afghanistan could do something as complicated as this. Just ask the Neo-cons who put together the official 9.11 commission report.

Danish or whatever his name is is completely messed up.

Gravatar So - are the conservatives that stupid that they don't realize that Colbert is putting this on?

Gravatar Colbert is a genious for pulling this stuff off.

Gravatar "Please go to other sites to discuss alternative 9/11 Theories. But please do think about it."

Do not think about it?

I am trying.

Gravatar sciguy. I too am a liberal progressive with wife and kids and job and dog. Still married to the same woman after 13 years etc. It’s striking to me that when you look around it’s the LP's who most solidly embody family values and the Republicans who divorce, frequent prostitutes and chase around teenage boys. Research shows the Conservatives are more likely to be into S&M. And they call us decadent.

Gravatar Re the policy: I'll respect it but disagree with it. It's extremely inconsistent to critique the MSM for being shills of the Government, when at the same time you want to shut out alternative media on what is the most important story of our time.

We certainly agree that the real terrorists reside in DC and Riyadh anyway.

Gravatar "D'Souza so had his ass handed to him. Colbert was merciless. Good for him."

So very true and so very enjoyable.

Colbert upped the ante on D'Souza's nonsense multiple times. "Let me show you just how idiotic your assertaions are, just by following their illogic !"

Gravatar Purple Patriot - thanks for the trip down Memory Lane. 20 years ago my freshman dorm-mates and I had a field day with the word "smegma," running for Student Government on the Student Mandate for Effecitve Government Moving Ahead (S.M.E.G.M.A.) Party. I haven't thought of the word in many years!

Gravatar P.S. We lost big time. But not without cool posters.

Gravatar I've watched this ten times on my TIVO after watching it last night. The most hysterical thing is that De Souza is not in on the joke..he does not realize he's being ridiculed. Bill Kristol and others get it...De Souza just keeps plowing ahead.

This beats the Wexler interview for all time Colbert....he just humiliates the right wing movement in one swipe.

Gravatar Okay, going to be childish: did Dinesh lose weight and his voice drop between those two appearances (or vise versa.)

I LOVED the Hawk Missile reference of Colbert's about Iran Contra. D' kinda hiccupped.

Gravatar If you can't discuss 9/11 than why include a Colbert piece about some guy blaming liberals for 9/11? I understand the policy but I'm wondering how one is supposed to approach something like this.

Site Monitor: We're not interested in moderating people throwing different theories at each other and getting increasingly more hysterical in defending their version. We're pretty sure that if you try real hard you can keep it to Colbert's technique or D'Souza's idiotic premise (as about 300 people already have done) without getting into larger issues of 9/11. By the way, did you know that we don't like multiple identities? We know who this is and we don't appreciate the new site name.

Gravatar I am an Indian too and I am ashamed of these two dumb fuck Indians who don't know what they are talking about.

Gravatar Regarding the Yalta Conference:

If we are to believe Churchill, FDR was on board with him in putting up a united front against Joe Stalin (within the context of all three being allies against the Axis powers, of course), but FDR's ill health (not liberal policies) kept him from putting up a rigorous defense to Stalin's bullying.

By the time of the Potsdam Conference, FDR was dead and Truman had been in office (I think) about two months. Churchill didn't have the same rapport with Truman that he had built up over many years with FDR, nor was Truman completely up to speed on the threat that the Soviet Union posed to the post war world. Basically, Truman and Churchill weren't on the same page, and Stalin was able to take advantage of this to install a communist government in Poland and rig elections there.

Gravatar Where do these lunatics come from?

Gravatar WHY IS IT?????
If we try to talk about the issues in the Middle East and America's role in them that caused such anger and resentment we are called "Blame America First"???

Yet, people like this, and Falwell and Robertson can go on national television and say that it is our fault because of how Americans wish to live their lives within America????

Are they not rationalizing the terrorists motivation for attacking us? Are they not giving aid and comfort to the terrorists? Are they not BLAMING AMERICA?

When we listen to screeds like theirs, are we not seeing a glimpse of the America that they wish to impose on our country if given the opportunity?

Just a little more power and they would easily be the Taliban and the Ayatollahs!

Gravatar Your right D'Souza... It must be Jimmy Carter's fault. What an asshole. It was nice to see Colbert make him look like the clown that he is.

Or was that already answered? That seems to blow his argument all to hell, however, since it's middle America (i.e, so-called traditional values America), who made those shows popular.

Anyway, the fact that Stephen does those interviews more or less improv is even more astounding.

Gravatar Dinesh D'Souza apparently thinks that Bin Laden is OK with Americans as long as they are upstanding traditional Christians. Nope, sorry, pinhead, that's wrong.

Bin Laden believes everyone is an infidel who doesn't follow his brand of extremist Islam, and that includes moderate muslims - he hates them too. Pinhead should listened to a few of Bin Laden's public messages.

Gravatar One of the finest moments of the show by far! Here's hoping he does the same thing to O'Reilly

Gravatar It's funny to hear someone like Dinesh D'souza extolling the the virtues of "traditional American values". If the the so called "real Americans" had their way, D'souza would be relegated to parking cars or bussing tables. He can thank the evil Liberals that he has been able to build a relatively lucrative career bashing them. These wingnuts - they just don't do irony, do they??

Gravatar 9-11,
dems fault

insanity..

or was it Clintons fault ..thats right Clinton did it

Gravatar Why don't conservative warmongers ever take responsibility for their own failures? Lest it be forgotten, Republicans have been in the White House 22 out of the last 34 years. Fiscal irresponsibility, mismanagement and record deficits have occurred primarily on their watch. Barry Goldwater would be ashamed of Dinesh D'Souza.

Gravatar UPDATE: This is Nicole. The site team wanted me to remind our readers that this thread deals ONLY with Colbert's interview with D'Souza and that any and all 9/11 alternative theories brought up in response will be deleted in their entirety. Please respect John's wish to not have 9/11 discussions on his site and please don't make more work for the site team. Thanks.

right?

Gravatar How is it that people like this, and Ann Coulter, and David Horowitz (to name just a few whose sanity is seriously in question and who seldom, if ever, make an argument that even remotely holds water) manage to get on major TV outlets all the time and people like Gore Vidal, Noam Chomsky, Barbara Ehrenreich and even Molly Ivins are nowhere to be seen?

Gravatar Colbert is a matador who sends right-wingers charging off the logic cliff. He holds out FDR and whoosh! There goes D'Souza blaming the New Deal for 9/11. Reductio ad absurdam.
I thought it was a bit annoying towards the end when Colbert kept interupting him but it was worth it to get D'Souza on record sypathizing with Bin Laden.

Gravatar D'Souza pwned!!!
No need to herald Colbert's "brilliance" in this instance, as it was much like watching someone beat up on a quadrapalegic. Not too much work beyond swinging.

A big 'ol Tip of the Hat to Colbert for actually doing the work to beat down the intellectual amputee. I almost started feeling bad for the guy after Colbert smacked him down, backed up to let get back up only to smack him down again. Then, I remembered what this guys' "views" are (that's nice-speack for schizophrenic lunacy) and got right back into cheering Colbert on.

Gravatar A bit o'history D'Souza is unfamiliar with: He says the Islamist radicals "don't know the real America. They only know the distorted version of America they see in the media." (PS - "the media" should be called what they are -- advertizers. That's where most people around the world get their view of America from-- the advertizing industry, which is filled with market researchers like Karl Rove).

Anyway, one of the most influential anti-Western, fundamentalist Muslim thinker/activists of the modern era was an Egyptian named Sayyid Qutb. He develped his hatred for America and the West right here in the good old US of A. He attended a university in Greeley Colorado -- a very CONSERVATIVE town where alcohol was illegal--- in the 1950s. Not exactly a bastion of liberal decadence. One of the things that disgusted Kutb was America's obsession with lawn care. Another was chaperoned town dances at a local Christian church, where males and females were allowed to dance TOUCHING EACH OTHER. Another was the American male's obsession with sports.

That the "liberal decadence" that Al Qaeda despises -- church dances, football and green lawns.

Gravatar This one's for Mr. Colbert... we all know how he fears bears

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T...h? v=TUX0UKg3Jdw

Gravatar I did not enjoy the beating Colbert gave D'souza, although I'm in wholehearted agreement with the argumentative positions that underlay Colbert's discourse. Colbert's display of raw aggression against an obviously helpless opponent was not the sort of thing which will improve American respectability.

Colbert could have been entertaining, even humorous, but to do that he would have had to give D'Souza time to respond to the blunt-object blows. As it was, Colbert relied upon rhetorical strategies which made him look as brutal as D'Souza, although not quite so stupid.

Gravatar neodata | Homepage | 01.18.07 - 1:06 pm | #

You take that back. Stephen does not fear bears. Stephen simply sees them for the America hating, ravenous, lethal threat that they are.

Gravatar Who!?!?!?

next topic.

Gravatar I watched this on TV and wasn't sure whether to laugh, cry, or puke. My initial thought was, "Is this guy SERIOUS?!" Then I realized he actually was. Unbelievable, and scary...Stephen Colbert was brilliant though, as always. I'm looking forward to see how he handles O'Reilly!

Gravatar I'm looking forward to seeing how he handles O'Reilly...proofreading is good.

Gravatar Colbert's brilliant. A while back, George S. Thompson wrote a book called "Verbal Judo: Words as a Force Option", the premise basically being you use the other person's arrogance, ignorance and ego to add to your power in a verbal exchange. Colbert must've read - nay, wrote the book. I think that also answers the question of why these troglodytes continue to come on the show only to get their ass handed to them - their ego makes them think that they will be the ONE that finally bests Colbert. Lambs to the slaughter...

Gravatar Sorry. That's George C. Thompson. Yikes. Maybe my affinity for Gonzo journalism got the better of me...

Gravatar [no 9/11 or any other conspiracy theories, please.]

Gravatar Do you know what would have been cool?

After D'Souza stated that he agreed with radical Islamics, Colbert should have said "Sir, prove to me that you aren't the enemy"

Gravatar Welcome to the next generation of "thinkers" that conservative think-tanks have cranked out over the last twenty years - a/k/a/ the Reagan-babies.

Dinesh D'Souza is considered one of the best-and-brightest young minds in conservatism today.

But, Russell Kirk, Frank Myer and W.F. Buckley he is not. Unlike D'Souza, these men were respectable and serious thinkers. They knew how to formulate and debate ideas in a civil manner.

By comparison, D'Souza (and Ann Coulter et al.) are mental midgets that rely on emotions rather than facts in order to sell books and divide Americans.

You know a movement is in its final years when it its apologists come from the bottom of the academic barrel.

Gravatar Good job by Colbert. I'm so glad that he didn't even attempt to treat this whore with any seriousness at all. Treat him like the clown that he is and let everyone see it confirmed when he starts speaking.

Gravatar Its rather sad that crooksandliars.com allows and encourages multiple comments about how D'souze "looks" like a terrorist. Of course, he's from India and India is the largest victim of islamic terrorism on the planet, with more civilians murdered by Islamists than in all other countries combined. The very reason the Taliban and Pakistan supported-terrorism exists is to wage asymmetrical warfare against India. Lakshar-e-Taibba has only one stated goal: the complete destruction of Hinduism and slaughter of all Hindus.

LOL! So funny that this D'Nesh loves the type of America that would call him a "sand monkey!"

I find it really funny that the pseudo-enlightened people are letting their guard down and projecting to others what they are actually thinking themselves...

LOL!

Gravatar in a word...douchebag

Gravatar Colbert did a good job with this guy - who probably would know if Coultergeist is a man in drag or just a woman with an Adam's apple. This guy's inability to tell a joke from a serious statement (something conservatives seem to have a problem with) earned him a Worst Person nod last night.

Gravatar Huh?

Aren't Islamic VERY family, albeit with the man in charge of everything?

It's an 11/9 conspiracy.

Gravatar Now that was a 'How-to' clinic in NeoCon taxidermy.
I've never seen an insect stuffed before...next time he pulls off their wings he should make a wish

Gravatar Censorship sucks...

9-11 was an inside job.

Gravatar I'm actually pretty taken aback by your broadbrush accusation that any alternative theory to what happened beyond the official story be labeled a conspiracy theory.
Wouldn't you consider D'Souzas stance a conspiracy theory?
I might be able to understand trying to keep the thread on point, but you and I and many other bloggers realize threads take on a form of there own. If a poster wants to take some of the interview and interject a alternative theory based off a particular point of the interview, that should not be deleted simply because the administrator feels its a conspiracy theory.
I would like to say that the FDR point of the interview was missing one point. I feel it was FDR's use of false flag operations (Pearl Harbor), that set the precedent for future presidents to offer up American citizens and military up for sacrifice to forment a war that would otherwise be impossible if it were not for the attacks that were facilitated.
If you at C&L really believe in the title of your website then you might want to rethink your recent decision of censorship.
Sean

Gravatar How convenient for Dinesh and chums. Bring back the 1950's and Islamic terrorists will start to......

What exactly?

At most they would be mildly amused, since it was the 'depraved' culture of the American 1950's (among other things) which ignited modern Islamism in the first place. Eisenhower - you dirty fucker. I banish your liberal evil from this earth! Begone demon!

When will it all end? When we all start wearing thin ties and dancing in a responsible manner of course! Bin Laden will be dealt a mortal blow to his balls. And Dinesh can get another book deal.

The stuff about FDR was great. Why not blame Christopher "Another Liberal" Columbus for the rise of the Taliban? If that bastard hadn't discovered America there would never have been an FDR to ruin the world and make it ripe for homo-commie-bortion-Isla-tax-wrongism!

We love you Dinesh. More please.

Gravatar alternative theories? how about the damn truth?

but yea lets talk about some moron puppet show instead of the most important event in our recent history.

Gravatar My vasectomy?

Gravatar I was never all that impressed with the "old conservative" arguments of Buckley, etc. They used a lot of big words and tried to dress up racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, and environmental destruction with long-winded pseudo-intellectual bullshit.

Gravatar I had forgotten how boring this site has become, and why I seldom visit it anymore.

Gravatar *drobinson | 01.18.07 - 1:34 pm | #

You have to be kidding. Apart from talking over him a few times, what did Colbert do that was wrong? D'Souza's entire thesis is ridiculous, and an unfounded partisan attack. As others have observed upthread, Colbert used the classic debate technique of reductio ad absurdum to establish and expose exactly how radical D'Souza's assertions really are. D'Souza is not merely a social conservative, nor even a social regressive, he is a radical. The Slate article I linked upthread has D'Souza spell it out explicitly as well:

[I]f the political left and the Islamic fundamentalists are in the same foreign policy camp [because they both hate American imperialism], then by the same token the political right and the Islamic fundamentalists are on the same wavelength on social issues. The left is allied with some radical Muslims in opposition to American foreign policy, and the right is allied with an even larger group of Muslims [which includes radical Muslims] in their opposition to American social and cultural depravity. This is the essential new framework I propose for understanding American foreign policy and American social issues.

D'Souza's thesis has no merit. Those individual arguments he has publicly expressed have no merit. Colbert trounced him based on substance, not style, although there's no question he trounced him handily on style points as well. Colbert allows D'Souza to advance his ludicrous assertions before he pounces. D'Souza would be schooled in a formal debate as well (and I saw it happen on PBS years ago, on Buckley's debate series). It's not as if Colbert engages in the bullying tactics of Hannity and his ilk here - there's an huge difference between shutting someone else up and nailing them down on their actual views. The former is done by hacks, the latter is done by good journalists and debaters. Frankly, the MSM could use to do more of what Colbert did, albeit with a tone appropriate to their profession (less jokes). Colbert's trying to be entertaining, and he succeeds (as usual), but all the pearl-clutching in the world about a lack of civility can't erase the fact that Colbert's little segment also contained more substance and meaningful journalism than most interviews out there.

Gravatar How can anybody with a closed mind be an intellectual

Gravatar OMG--I've been thinking over the maggot thing...

Do you know how far that goes? The Protestant Reformation! THE DIET OF WORMS!

Oh, wait, that was the Pope...

It's more insidious than fluoridation--they got the Pope--that means...

...William F. Buckley!

Those filthy liburals!

Gravatar I will simplify D'Souza's argument - he is describing the British Empire, which lasted 200 years because white women were not allowed to flaunt in front of 'the natives'. Because that's the way 3rd world men (and women) like it.

An Afghani woman living in Britain, for example, told me that it is all about underwear and tampon adverts on TV. She regards these as offensive and terrorism as a fit response.

That's how it was in Bombay when D'Souza was there. And for vast masses of men (and their women) in the 3rd world, that is how it must remain - and most of the world's youth are in 3rd world conservative countries. If white women continue to flaunt their freedom in public, then there will be a reaction from the 3rd world men - and D'Souza knows these men and speaks for them.

The Victorian British understood this, how the world works, very well. But Americans have never understood it because the US is founded on an opposite myth. This is indeed a clash of civilizations.

Gravatar I'm with John, I'm so tired of those crazy 9/11 conspiracists. It's not really important who did what and when. It is more important to support Nancy (impeachments off the table) Pelosi and the other Democrats who enabled Bush when they gave him leave to make war on anybody he chooses and to take away our civil liberties. I mean these are the people who are going make America great again. I can't wait to get back to killing Iraqis the old fashion way with economic sanctions. Get rid of neo conservatism and bring back neo liberalism anyday.

Gravatar THE GOVERNMENT MADE 9/11 HAPPEN
I AM MAKING WORK FOR THE ADMINS

Gravatar Colbert, try asking a serios question and then listening to the responce and i'll take you seriously.

Gravatar There seems to be a bit of confusion. The Daily Show is a comedy bit, these are not real interviews. Anything you witnessed that may have seemed like wit or intelligence on the part of the Daily Show was purely special effect or the keen use of stunt doubles. But, if you find this to be witty or informative may I recommend you tune in to a debate forum called the World Wide Wrestling Federation. I'm sure you'll find it to your liking.
