He was an agent of intolerance - a man that set up a school, liberty university, that taught the students to be warriors for the Christian right - he fought against teaching of evolution, a woman's right to choose, gay rights and so many other causes. He has caused lasting damage to our nation that we must overcome in 2008.
Still, I have respect for the dead and hope his family and friends get through his death well.

It's hard to feel very sympathetic for this sorry excuse of a Christian, but I do feel sympathy for his family. They've lost a father and husband and grandfather. Not an easy loss to take.
I say that he's answering to his god now for the actions he's taken in his life. His views on and hatred of others who didn't worship, marry, believe, or vote as he did was inexcusably non-Christian. I hope others learn from his bad example and become more tolerant in this life of human beings, period.

Lets all remember that this is a man who did vile, awful things, such as supporting Apartheid and Botha all through the eighties (how's that for loving thy neighbour) while appealing to the deep-felt religious beliefs of millions to justify it. Jerry Falwell was an evil man.
Conventionally speaking, I don't believe in Evil. Evil is an archaic term. To me it is an archaic euphemism for mental pathology. That's what Jerry Falwell's contribution to our nation was: creating and cultivating a mental and social pathology ... and enriching himself in the process.
His organization will now groom a successor huxster to "fill the vacuum" in order to keep the sickness going.

With all due respect to the site-monitors wishes, its hard to have a lot of respect for the dead when their entire existance was about hating, dividing, and lies. An entire existance based around the manipulation of people to further an agenda completely against the morality pulpit that one chooses.
I would LOVE to see the Pope's reaction to this. Condone him, and give the right that's twisted his beliefs global acceptance? Condemn him, and cut the teeth of this vitriolic movement? Or ignore him, and focus on matters he has no idea about...

Why should we be "ashamed" of how we feel about Jerry Falwell?
Used his pulpit to preach for segregation, and had a segregated church until the 1970's.
Used his TV shows to sell his political "philosophy," which included propping up the old Apartheid South Africa.
Blamed "the liberals" (and anyone else he didn't like, including those not "Christian" like himself,) for anything that went wrong, including 9-11.
Financed and sold on his TV show the bullshit video, "The Clinton Chronicles."

Why should someone who spread so much hatred between fellow human beings (look at this board, for one) and his teaching that human rights are bad (ACLU), homosexuals caused the downfall of america. Even if you are a christian, look at how much people hate YOU because of how Falwell represented you. Shameful. Should we now be respectful of Racists of the past? Should we be respectful for the lost of Timothy McVeigh because he had family too? Ted Kazinsky? Jeffery Dhamer. These people said some F'd up things too, and we can criticize all of it, I don't give a damn if they had family.

If you check out FreeRepublic, their first reaction was to scrutinize statements from DU and other Left sites. Some of them even bragged of planting hateful, murderous comments on Dem sites. These pigs' first priority is to play political dirty tricks even when one of their own dies. Truly sickening.

I guess I feel sorry for people who knew him personally and had fond memories of him. My condolences...
Having said that, I never had even an ounce of respect for Jerry Falwell while he was alive. He had that rare talent of not only being a tremendous ass totally removed from logic, but basically dead wrong on basically every major issue. He was a tremendous putz who will be missed tremendously by a few but will fade to obscurity rather quickly, god willing.

Again, he's answering to his god now for all the hate and discontent he spread in the name of his god. Please leave the rest of us alone to live our lives as we see fit. That's what your god really wants, you are just too wrapped up in your own priggish religiousity to see that fact.

I'm glad he's dead, all he did was sow dischord and hatred his entire life, that is when he wasn't busy bilking poor people of their hard earned cash.

Appearing on MSNBC today, Rev. Jerry Falwell responded to criticism of his recent attack comparing Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) to Lucifer. Asked whether his remarks were disrespectful, Falwell said, “I do not.” MSNBC’s anchor then asked, “So I take this to mean that will you not be apologizing to Hillary Clinton?” Falwell answered, “No, I will say it over and over again.” Falwell said it was clear his comments were tongue-in-cheek “because there’s no way that Lucifer’s going to run [for president].”

Falwell's death proves nothing, except it gives an opportunity to consider his life, and his life does prove something.
Can any rational entity consider that an omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient creator could exist who would not have squashed Falwell when he was a mere egg?
Ergo, Falwell's life proves there is no god.
And if, by some wonderfully perverse fluke, this reasoning is wrong, and the christians are right, they'll get their just deserts by being forced to go through eternity in the company of Falwell, which, no matter how many golden gates, angels, and wafting clouds there are, any rational entity would consider hell.

With respect to Falwell’s wife, three children, and many grand-children, I morn for their loss. With respects to Falwell’s money-loving power-hungry, faux-introspective tirades – I’m glad they’re over.
Come now all who wish to profit by Jerry’s death in an attempt to herd the flock of his evangelical “school” and “university”. We’ll now see the lasting legacy of Jerry as the Pat Robertson crowd at first praise his vision, then covet his belongings. Like they did with Jim and Tammy, we will now witness a vicious and voracious free-for-all among cash-starved high-priests. For this was Jerry’s legacy – not an organization for the benefit of mankind, but an enterprise for the pilfering of sheep – at the expense of mankind. Were it not so, it would not be so. Good night Jerry. I will only shed a tear for what might have been…

Over the years I have heard Falwell say some very vile and hateful things about other people who did not hold his particular religious view. Much of what he has said, made me down right angry at times which then brought me to a point where I despised him.
Now I could say some very nasty things at this point but I won't go there. Its not my place. After all, I am not Jerry Falwell's judge. Only God can judge his actions and deeds. Maybe fewer senior citizens will now no longer go hungry and get sick, by keeping their money and using it to buy food.
Falwell had an admirable aptitude for talking the poor into giving him money. Many people admire him for his skill.

The first thing I thought when I heard the news is "I hope he doesn't suffer." Why? Because I'm not about to lower myself to the Rush Limbaughs of the world who will even attack a good man on the day of his funeral (Tip O'Neil) ...
I then asked myself if there was anything good I could say about him... no I thought, he was the first of many reasons I left Christianity ... and then I thought... Wow! I just had a good thought about Jerry Falwell.

Many will look on his empire and covet what he has. He will be a light and a beacon to all of those that wish to follow the path of Mammon.

Of course, as a human being I feel for those he left behind. I find it mildly offensive, however, to be expected to go through this ritualised expression of sympathy for someone who disdained pretty much everything I believe in. Not saying this is Siteowner's expectation, but I am sure this thread is being duly scanned by flying monkeys from sea to shining sea.

That the death of this man of intolerance, bigotry, and hate will get more press attention than the 5 solders who died Monday is tragic and unforgivable.
In honor of those who have fallen and truly deserve the thanks and respect of this country I give you the latest identifications as reported by the military:
---
_ Army Pvt. Anthony J. Sausto, 22, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; killed Thursday by small-arms fire in Baghdad; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.
_ Army Spc. Michael K. Frank, 36, Great Falls, Mont.; died Thursday when a bomb exploded near his patrol in Baghdad; assigned to the 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.
_ Marine Maj. Douglas A. Zembiec, 34, Albuquerque, N.M.; died Friday during combat in Baghdad; assigned to Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps National Capital Region, Henderson Hall, Arlington, Va.
_ Army Pfc. William A. Farrar Jr., 20, Redlands, Calif.; died Friday when an explosive detonated near his vehicle in Iskandariyah; assigned to the 127th Military Police Company, 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, Darmstadt, Germany.
_ Army 1st Lt. Andrew J. Bacevich, 27, Walpole, Mass.; died Sunday in Balad after an explosive detonated near his unit in Salahuddin province; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

With his passing, there is one less terrorist in the world, and he was as much of a terrorist as any other.
His prime weapon was his tongue, and it did much damage to a lot of people over the years. His burning hatred of virtually all things that were not within his christofascist realm will forever taint his legacy.
I extend my sympathies to his family however - it is always difficult to lose someone, no matter how evil. I would bet that more than a few also mourned the losses of Sadaam and Hitler when they passed on.

You call yourself the moral majority
We call ourselves the people in the real world
Trying to rub us out, but were going to survive
God must be dead if youre alive
You say, god loves you. come and buy the good news
Then you buy the president and swimming pools
If jesus dont save til were lining your pockets
God must be dead if youre alive
Circus-tent con-men and southern belle bunnies
Milk your emotions then they steal your money
Its the new dark ages with the fascists toting bibles
Cheap nostalgia for the salem witch trials
Stodgy ayatollahs in their dobble-knit ties
Burn lots of books so they can feed you their lies
Masturbating with a flag and a bible
God must be dead if youre alive
Blow it out your ass, jerry falwell
Blow it out your ass, jesse helms
Blow it out your ass, ronald reagan
Whats wrong with a mind of my own?
You dont want abortions, you want battered children
You want to ban the pill as if that solves the problem
Now you wanna force us to pray in school
God must be dead if youre such a fool
Youre planning for a war with or without iran
Building a police state with the ku klux klan
Pissed at your neighbour? dont bother to nag
Pick up the phone and turn in a fag
Blow it out your ass, terry dolan
Blow it out your ass, phyllis schlafly
Ram it up your cunt, anita
Cos God must be dead
If youre alive
God must be dead
If youre alive

I could only hope that his religion were true, and that his God exists... because that is the only was he would suffer the true misery and punishment and justice he deserves, according the the biblical philosophy he claims to adhere to.
For all his vile and evil words; for all his judging and condemnation of innocents... for all his trickery and disgusting behavior..

I can't get over the sad irony of people speculating about "where Falwell will end up" or "what he will learn in Heaven" and other superstitious nonsense. Which is just a capitulation to Falwell's twisted fairytales. Let us not forget that Falwell's message and worldview, with all its hatred and intolerance, its ignorance and bigotry, came 100% from a literal reading and interpretation of the entire Holy Bible. Let us not miss this opportunity to reflect on what that book, and the religions it has spawned, has done to the world. And let us read the latest writings of Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins, and educate ourselves. AMEN.

The site owners are right we need to show dignity and restraint while speaking our true feelings. Let's not be like Jerry Falwell and be hateful and intolerant.
- character first
"Hateful and intolerant", Character? Yeah, it would be in poor taste to express joy over Falwell's death, but I wouldn't call it "hateful" nor "intolerant" to do so.
No one commenting negatively here so disliked Falwell because he was white or because he was het or because he was a man or because he called himself a "Christian" or because he was overweight or because he was from...wherever he was from.
What commenters here overwhelmingly disliked were Falwell's words and actions. HE created that. The animosity felt for him by millions of people is not based in something inherent about his being and beyond his control.
That's a lot more than can be said for Falwell's more "generous" words for millions of his fellow Americans.
I believe that Falwell's words and actions are legitimate fodder for criticism and that the consistent proffering of such hatred was most certainly reflective of what little character the man ELECTED to exercise during his lifetime.

"Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason.
It could be that his head wasn't screwed on quite right.
It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.
But I think that the most likely reason of all

Hey yeah,
I'm all for respect, but it's gotta be a 2-way street. If it's not, then sure, you get points for being "bigger" then the other guy/side, but you are also, in a social way, being somewhat of a loser, as well as giving a very important dialectical upper-hand to the other guy/side.

I have nothing kind to say, and no real words of sympathy to offer. A man who sows the seeds of hate in his lifetime will not be mourned by many. Those who do mourn him are most likely his brothers in hate, and should be treated accordingly. But it is beneath me to celebrate anyone's loss. That's what Republicans do, and I am better than that.

God only knows where his soul is. I did not like him or his politics. I feel he did a lot of harm in the world. But here's the thing: Christ asked us to forgive. He asked us not to judge. He asked us to love and to pray for those who would do us harm. Many of us feel Jerry Falwell failed at those tasks in his public life. I'm going to let go of the dislike I felt for him now.
That's all I wanted to say.

I extend my sympathies to his family however - it is always difficult to lose someone, no matter how evil. I would bet that more than a few also mourned the losses of Sadaam and Hitler when they passed on.

To wit:
Jerry Falwell was responsible for many evil and vile things as well, and though not directly responsible for murders made in the name of Christ, was a conduit to allow those to happen.
Replace Jerry Falwell with Osama Bin Laden. Replace Christ with Allah. The Republicans that would condemn us for the same actions would be the loudest cheerleaders.
But it is wrong to send up a similar cheer for Falwell because he is a white American.
I think if you celebrate the death of a tyrant and terrorist, you celebrate them all.

A good friend and neighbour of mine died this morning as well, peacefully in her sleep after struggling many years with MS. It was a shock to everyone in my little village, as she was a fiercely independent, lovely, generous, intelligent woman who everyone who knew her respected, admired and enjoyed being around. I talked to her two days ago, while out walking the dogs, and she chatted with other neighbours in the village yesterday after she'd gone to her twice weekly gym session. Just this past year, she walked a mile in the Great North West Run - slowly, painfully, on crutches, every inch of the way on her own power - to raise money for MS research. She was a fantastic woman, with a large and lovely family, and her death will be felt by many as a personal loss to us all.
So when I read that Jerry Falwell also died around the same time, I couldn't help thinking that if there is a God, then he was simply balancing the kharmic books - take a good one, take a bad one. My friend Cynthia was worth a million Falwells, I won't miss his passing one jot.
Rest in peace, Cyn.

Nicole, all we need to do to commemorate this ugly, ugly man's lonely and unwitnessed demise is to remember him by his own words, which stand in eloquent testimony to the kind of "Christian" he was. His very physical appearance was testimony to his greed, avarice and mendacity. When he opened that despicable maw of his it was insult to visual injury.
He wasn't worth the energy it might have taken to hate him, but I for one am relieved - no, OVERJOYED - that he's gone, because it means he can never hurt anyone again.
To paraphrase Jesus, "He has HAD his reward."

Falwell made his living hating others, spreading intolerance, and trying to force his beliefs down the throats of the American people. He was a prick who wielded too much power in politics, and would gladly ship gays, liberals, artists, etc., etc., off to camps if he ever got the chance, which he won't now.

"Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." (Matthew 7:1-5 RSV)

I just wonder who's going to take over his church and if they'll be more civil and progressive or if they'll be just as bad or worse.
- Tigerwong
Tiger, I fear it won't make a difference. Falwell, as despicable an individual as he was, didn't create the hatred that exists among select populations of conservative fundamentalists. He merely exploited it to his personal profit. Yes, he deserves whatever animosity such exploitation would bring upon him and his legacy, but it's an unfortuante truth that without him, another will come along to take his place.
Before the "religious right" was talked into believing that they're all millionaires, there was Father Coughlin in the shoes of Falwell - lambasting the New Deal as not going far enough and blaming capitalism as the evil plot of "international banker Jews" who were all out to git the fundamentalist faithful. Before there was Coughlin, there was Billy Sunday, claiming sympathy for the poor and downtrodden while hobnobbing with the likes of Rockefeller and similarly well asseted Republicans.
Whoever takes over Falwell's church will need to be AS hateful as he was if they wish to keep that particular "congregation"/audience. If not, the next nearest hatemonger will be along to scoop up the goodies.
The likes of Joel Osteen or T.D. Jakes don't GET the same "faithful" that the Falwells and the Robertsons of the world get.

Janeane, that was my point. Osteen (and Jakes is just like him) won't ever keep the same kind of "faithful" that the likes of Falwell would get. That's why the next in line to Falwell's organization will be just another like Falwell and NOT someone who is interested in progressive understanding.

This is literally the 1st time I've ever felt a tinge of JOY to hear that someone has died. It's a bit of a guilty feeling, yet this bastard Falwell's passing is a very good thing for mankind. I know this in my core. Not the death of Nixon, not of Saddam Hussein (or his sons), not of Strohm Thurmond, not of Arafat, not of Franco, not of Mao, not of the worst death row inmate has a person's demise ever evoked anything but sadness in me before. However, the polarization that Falwell has enabled (along with Limbaugh, Cheney, Robertson, Coulter, Dobson, Hannity, et al has changed the way that I view "humanity". R.I.P. (my humanity).

Falwell was just a grifter. Instead of a casino or racetrack, he worked his game in the church or the hearts of the desperate. His currency included hubris and power and no doubt he will be canonized for his 'good works'.
It will be interesting to watch his heirs jockey-up to the succession. Wonder if Ralph Reed will try to 'rise from the dead'.

Jerry Falwell was a pompous con man who exploited poor, ignorant people's beliefs and bigotries in order to make himself rich and powerful.
He did a lot of damage to America, but now he is dead, and his suddenly headless political movement will quickly fade away.
If enough people like Falwell die, it will cheer me up quite a bit.

It's amazing that people are getting mad by the fact that people here are treating this mans passing like he treated others when they passed. Did he show respect for the fallen on 9/11? AIDS victims? It would be the moral, and Christian, thing to turn the other cheek and show him the respect that he never showed for the people that he disagreed with. However, no one should be surprised at this type of reaction. Should we, for instance, show respect for that priest Phelps, who goes to soldiers funerals, taunts the families and holds up signs that “god kills fags dead”?

Although I do not see it possible for me to have been anymore the opposite of mr. falwell or disagreed any more strongly with his views, which are catergorized as hateful, bigoted, anti-semetic, misogynistic, i will say that i feel for his family and wish them solace and strength through this extraordinarily tough time, and wish for the media to treat this man's death with dignity. dignity being something perhaps obligatory because a man did die. And when the time comes and mourning is over, i will be first in line to denounce his legacy as hateful and hope that the movement he began to end.

I do not have anything positive to say. I love and respect C&L, so I won't go there. Besides, I pride myself on never having been reprimanded by the site monitor. I will just let Mr. Falwell speak for himself. Below are some of his wonderful and inspiring quotes...
AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals.
Jerry Falwell
If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being.
Jerry Falwell
Homosexuality is Satan's diabolical attack upon the family that will not only have a corrupting influence upon our next generation, but it will also bring down the wrath of God upon America.
Jerry Falwell
Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions.
Jerry Falwell
The whole global warming thing is created to destroy America's free enterprise system and our economic stability.
Jerry Falwell
I believe that global warming is a myth. And so, therefore, I have no conscience problems at all and I'm going to buy a Suburban next time.
Jerry Falwell
I drive a GMC Suburban. And I have since the early '70s.
Jerry Falwell
It is God's planet - and he's taking care of it. And I don't believe that anything we do will raise or lower the temperature one point.
Jerry Falwell
There's been a concerted effort to steal Christmas.
Jerry Falwell
The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country.
Jerry Falwell
Billy Graham is the chief servant of Satan in America.
Jerry Falwell
My problem is not with the intentions of the Bush presidency. My problem is where it might go under his successors.
Jerry Falwell
I grew up in the segregated South, right here in Lynchburg, Virginia.

I disagreed with his stated beliefs, but I credit that he believed what he stated. I credit that he worked hard to build what he believed to be a good and necessary thing. I credit that he devoted himself to his beliefs and his works.
I have no doubt that he loved his family and friends deeply and did his best to care for them and honor them in his daily life.
Whatever the truth of God, which none of us really know, I credit this man with having done his best to serve that which he believed.
I hope that he finds peace and comfort in the afterlife and that those who knew and loved him find peace and comfort in their memories of him.

"Mr Scrooge!" said Bob; "I'll give you Mr Scrooge, the Founder of the Feast!"
"The Founder of the Feast indeed!" cried Mrs Cratchit, reddening. "I wish I had him here. I'd give him a piece of my mind to feast upon, and I hope he'd have a good appetite for it."
"My dear," said Bob, "the children. Christmas Day."
"It should be Christmas Day, I am sure," said she, "on which one drinks the health of such an odious, stingy, hard, unfeeling man as Mr Scrooge. You know he is, Robert. Nobody knows it better than you do, poor fellow."
"My dear," was Bob's mild answer, "Christmas Day."
"I'll drink his health for your sake and the Day's," said Mrs Cratchit, "not for his. Long life to him. A merry Christmas and a happy new year! -- he'll be very merry and very happy, I have no doubt!"
The children drank the toast after her. It was the first of their proceedings which had no heartiness. Tiny Tim drank it last of all, but he didn't care twopence for it. Scrooge was the Ogre of the family. The mention of his name cast a dark shadow on the party, which was not dispelled for full five minutes.

Well, color us angry Americans. We are sick of men like this who condone murder, torture, war, hate, and greed, all while twisting the love, charity, and kindness that Jesus' teachings represent.
Sorry if watching 5 more soldiers and 50 more Iraqis die today because of "Christians" like Falwell and Bush doesn't put us in more of a civil mood.
The bastards who shouted us down when we told our countrymen this war was a lie were not worried about civility.
"Traitors" Look who the real traitors are. Bush's actions show that he is traitor to his nation. Falwell's actions show that he is a traitor to his very religion.

I can't say I have anything other than absolute loathing for the man, but I still give my best to those close to him.
I don't blame those who have nothing good to say about Falwell, but I think it's important that if we don't have anything nice to say, we say nothing at all. Saying that the hate on C&L is Falwell's legacy is like saying that the Iraq war is a legacy of 9/11. Hate begets hate. We have to figure out a way to stop hating, and figure out how to convince people like Falwell's followers to stop hating. (I didn't say it way easy...)

I have no doubt that Jerry hated anybody that did not agree with him. It's hard not to turn this into a hate feast when he hated so many people. HATE is the first tenet of the Jerry Falwell's hate groups.
He has done as much harm to America as he could. He and his followers are NOT christians. Real christians don't hate and they don't want more wars. I just told my wife the other night that he is not going to live long since his was so fat and out of shape. All good things come to them that wait.

Just remember this:
Jerry Falwell did not always empathize with others when they died or passed away. Falwell has utter contempt for equal rights of women in America and led the fight to defeat the Equal Rights Amendment and was the leader in the present day "religious right" movvement. Falwell along with Pat Robertson have advocated for more and not less violence in the Middle East and have had violent contempt for gays and lesbians and single mothers here in America.
I cannot judge Jerry Falwell and will not on this day either. Falwell never had the right to judge others and he led the charge to divide America into one of a secular versus a religious fundamentalist one and I never went along with that and do not today, either.
I do know that these evangelical preachers have made millions of money by taking it from hard working people to promise them things they cannot promise in reality.

Jeremy, that's very noble. However, if the people who control this country don't reciprocate that (and they don't in their economic and social policy) the situation can in a pretty short time turn into outright abuse. This man, and many on the right, attack those who are less powerful than them, and to not attack back, or to always give them a pass out of morals that they don’t adhere to, makes us their servants. I'm not going to waste my time bashing him, who cares and what will that accomplish? I just doubt you’d be so forgiving if you were a family member of an AIDS or 9/11 victim.

Mattastic, if someone on our side of the fence passed away, as even liberals do sometimes, what would an HONEST conservative say? That that liberal "spread hatred", as so many commenters here are saying of Falwell? That that liberal personally profited from manipulation of hatred, like others are saying here about Falwell?
IS this generally said about liberals from even the most unhinged of conservative pundits?
Or is it more likely that the conservative wishing to trash the work of a liberal pundit or preacher would have to default to untruths? Is it likely that they would resort to attacks on inherent qualities of the person or entire groups of people, like being homosexual or non-white, non-Christian or female?
What is being trashed about Falwell here are his ACTUAL words and deeds, not some fiction nor some inherent quality of his being.

# “AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals”
# "It appears that America's anti-Biblical feminist movement is at last dying, thank God, and is possibly being replaced by a Christ-centered men's movement which may become the foundation for a desperately needed national spiritual awakening."
# "If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being."
# After the September 11 attacks Falwell said, “I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen."

On a Sunday morning in 1978 I was flipping through the TV stations looking for something to distract me from a hangover. And there it was, a scene right out of Stranger in a Strange Land. Some sort of preacher in a white suit, microphone in hand, descending stairs on a stage while lit up by spotlights!! WOW!! I listened for a few minutes. His name was Jerry Falwell and at the moment he was recruiting members for something called the "I LOVE AMERICA CLUB". For a mere $1,000 donation you became a member and received an American flag lapel pin. WOW AGAIN!! (dime store .59 cents) What stunned me at the time was his blending of politics and religion, something I had not heard before. When the camera panned the audience it was mostly female, mostly middle-aged and older. Mostly white. There were a few men and a few younger people and even a very few people of color. These people seemed dedicated to everything he had to say. I knew our country was in some kind of trouble that day, and I've watched his rise to heights of power over the politics of hate. I believe he did a lot to elect Ronald Regan because I was watching his rants from time to time. There were several tactics that I noticed him using, one was FEAR, of Communists, non-Christians and anyone liberal who supported abortion rights. The other tactic was the martyr tactic. He kept repeating how much Christians were hated in modern society. How they had to stick together on things. Planting the fear the everyone with a different political view HATED THEM!!!! Again blending politics and religion, yes way back then, and encouraging people to send Regan to the White House. They were his Moral Majority. He seemed as power hungry as he was narrow minded. I'm trying not to be disrespectful, but these are just the facts, maam, just the facts.

Jeremy, does the "far left" (define this for me) spew as much intolerance towards Islam as people like Falwell have? No. What you are talking about, obviously, is Christianity. People on the "far left", which I am probably a member of, don't hate people of faith, they hate people of faith forcing their world view on others. There was an interview I saw on Bill Moyers program with a graduate of Robertson's law school. She said that she wanted the law to reflect TRUTH. What was TRUTH in her mind? The bible. I don't want that "truth" to be law. THAT is what the "far left" has a problem with. You want to prey to Jesus, you want to take (parts) of the bible litteraly in YOUR life, go ahead. Just keep it away from me, unless I invite you in.

Respect? Ask for silence maybe but to ask people Falwell had an active hand in keeping down (women, blacks, Jews, gays, AIDS victims, and on and on...) to show some "respect" is pretty amazing. Of all the coverage I've read on this today this is the first call for respect for Falwell I've seen. Sad that it's at C&L because I really like the site and generally find it friendly to gay rights issues, something important to me in the most personal way. I can't show Falwell any respect. Sorry. And for the request of it I can't feel I owe much respect to the site either -- you have to give it to get it and asking me to be nice about Falwell is disrespectful.

Jeremy, again, very noble of you. Like I said though, if the nobleness comes only from the relatively weak, tyranny will follow.
Strength through force is not the answer to hostility, when will we ever learn...
2 Corinthians 12:9 And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

Folks, just remember this:
Jerry Falwell, in short, had utter hatred for his fellow man. He was a proud segregationist in the 1950's and 1960's and who started his first religious school after the Brown versus Board of Education decision demanding racial integration. Falwell's hatred of the Federal Government began not with anti-gay or anti-women hatred but racism which easily led to hatred of single mothers and later gays who had AIDS.
did not always empathize with others when they died or passed away. Falwell led fundraising campaigns along with Pat Robrtson directed at gays, lesbians, feminists, and single mothers with children.
Falwell, in fact, had utter contempt for equal rights of women in America and led the fight to defeat the Equal Rights Amendment and was the leader in the present day "religious right" movvement.
Yes, Falwell was hardly empathetic to gays who died of AIDS and was an enemy of feminists, single mothers, the poor, women in general, and anyone who did not walk the way he and the likes of Pat Robertson, Billy Graham, and James Dobson preach to this day. Falwell used poor people's plight to manipulate them into giving to the evangelical movement. The evangelical movement too often tells the poor they are in that situation because they lack the "grace" of Jesus which is one of their big lies that the media does not report on.
The legacy of Falwell will be leading the anti-gay movment in America and pointing fingers of those whom had the AIDS virus. Falwell pointed to those who were suffering with AIDS to their death seem like felons and criminals rather than human beings. This is what I will always remember about Mr. Falwell above and beyond anything else he may have done "worthy." Falwell was a hater and did not walk the talk that Jesus did--as in the Sermon on the Mount!

You're right, The Zoner. By posting a comment critical of a single evil man on a non-important blog, we are every bit as bad as this "reverend" who:
* Became fabulously wealthy destroying the hearts of other men
* Cannibalized Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker's hard work to launch himself into fame and stardom
* Spread hatred and lies about entire swathes of the U.S. population
* Amassed large groups of people to deny the AIDS epidemic and treat it as an act of a righteous God, rather than a medical issue
* Advised President Bush on the war and provided religious cover for his claim that "God told him to invade Iraq" and kill its civilians.
* Championed policies of governments with which he held considerable sway, that killed thousands of innocent people (see above)
You are absolutely right! I can see the error of my ways now. Ass.

Having grown up in Lynchburg,(home of chapstick), I've been aware of Falwell's wily ways for many years. He's always had his followers, mostly from the rural farmlands around Lynchburg, but he would mostly just cause people around town to roll their eyes with his fire and brimstone snake oil salesmanship. Then Reagan came along and brought him up to national prominence. That's when things got weird and I moved away.

That is the type of thinking that keeps slaves slaves. The elites in DC put all of their support behind the top 5% of the country, they could care less about you, me or anyone here, but I'm supposed to accept that and be the bigger person because it was written into a book by a human centuries after Christ. Um, no. If people like Falwell want to ignore the basic messages of the bible (for every reference to homosexuality, how many references are their about poverty?) and plunder the earth I'll fight back, damn the Bible, Koran, Torah or the book of Scientology.

Ad Hominems are an attack on character to deflect from the message. You used it in reference to merely an opinion on where your comments would be most welcomed. Whether you agree with the comment or not doesn't make it any for of rhetorical device.
It may have deflected from your message, but this thread has a message of its own and doesn't need yours or mine.
Personally, I say when an enemy has fallen, it's time to put away your sword, unless your wary of his compatriots. Otherwise, all your doing is corpse mutilation.
Yet as ye reap so shall you sow. This is what's happening now on the thread, Falwell is sowing in his death the animosity he himself projected out.
One can liken it to the Golden Rule as well.

Each person has their own feelings about the loss of a great (in Falwell
s case we're talking a "Built By Wendy's" kind of greatness) public figure and for most, death ameliorates the past. But in Falwell's case, I have to make an exception.
Within me are conflicting voices. In one ear I hear the popping of champagne corks and celebration. In the other, a voice of reason suggesting that expression of pleasure would only diminish any right to moral rectitude that I might otherwise possess.
The sound of champagne won the battle.
Falwell's finally gone? NO LOSS.

If a person dying stops the deaths of many others, it is worth it. And Falwell did cause the deaths of many.
So stick it in ... oh, never mind.
