A "Major League Asshole"
http://archive.salon.com/politic...9/04/cuss_word/
In an embarrassing gaffe, George W. Bush insults a New York Times reporter.
---snip---
"...Waving and smiling to the crowds, Bush and his running mate, former Defense Secretary Dick Cheney, seemed to be enjoying the generous reception offered by the Republican enclave in the Chicago suburbs.
Then Bush spotted New York Times reporter Adam Clymer, who has been with the paper since 1977, serving as national political correspondent during the 1980 presidential race, as polling editor from 1983 to 1990 and as political editor during the successful presidential campaign of Bush's father in 1988.
"There's Adam Clymer -- major league asshole -- from the New York Times," Bush said.
"Yeah, big time," returned Cheney."

Shades of Prince Charles smiling for cameras while slagging off a journalist to his sons under his breath, blithely unaware he was being recorded. Much to the delight of the said journalist, as it certainly gave his career a boost. I think Bush is so used to his own domestic media rigidly controlled and Foxified that he's forgotten that the rest of the world's media hasn't been likewise castrated and gagged.

People, we are seeing in live time the total irreverence of the United States. We have now joined the league of inconsequential nations who all were once great powers reduced to nothing - and the US in record time - all in five and half years.
Who in their right mind would listen to a single thing this asswipe has to say? There will always be the 23% of American sheeple who will follow Chucklenuts off a cliff but the rest of the world now know we have no powers, no prestige, no ability to lead anybody in anything. We have gone from the most respected nations under Clinton to a complete joke under this guy. Would love to be a fly on the wall and hear the discussions that other world leaders have about this clown when he leaves the room. I strongly detest Bush and his policies. I believe he lied to the American public in order to intentionally escalate conflict in the middle east. I believe his actions at home and abroad are designed to help his rich cronies become richer while middle and lower class Americans continue to struggle. I believe Bush and the entire "neo-con" administration pretend to value democracy while ignoring everything in our own constitution that makes democracy possible. Bush is a horrible leader and has played a large part in making the world an incredibly dangerous and unstable place.
That being said, I could give a rat's ass if he uses a swear word. When opponents of Bush focus on his use of profanity instead of the actual horrible leadership he has brought to our country, it makes them seem petty. And quite frankly, it is petty. Shit, fuck, ass, damn - they're just words people. Sounds made by the vocal chords with specific placement of lips and teeth. That's all. If you believe in freedom, don't castigate a grown man for using profanity. Judge people by their actions and what their actions create. Bush has shown his disregard for the constitution and has weakened our freedom. Every American should be outraged by that fact.
Peace all.

Honestly, I'm no fan of commander cod-piece, but isn't it a little perverse that we're concentrating on naughty language caught over an open mic, rather than the substance of what Bush said? Or even the rest of his little speech (which I've yet to see a transcript of.) Who among us has never said 'cut this/that/the sh*t' before in our lives? Bush has a lot of major faults to focus on, there's no need to nail him on the minor, more human ones.

i couldn't give 2 shits that he is a swearing man--i am too. i bet his holier-than-thou christo-fascists might be a little taken aback, though. but, face it, they worship bush and a gaffe like this is easily overlooked.
i thought the following was more embarassing, what he was saying to putin...
"You eight hours? Me too. Russia's a big country and you're a big country. Takes him eight hours to fly home. Not Coke, diet Coke. ... Russia's big and so is China. Yo Blair, what're you doing? Are you leaving," Mr. Bush said.

one day bush should really sit down and look at a map, he might not appear so friggin dumb.
bush: so russia, is that a big country? where is that anyway, is that close to Moscow?

To all the folks who don't think Bush cursing and chewing like a cow in front of the other world leaders is no big deal, I say WRONG. It again proves to the world that Bush is an idiot and that world leaders see this and have little respect for him. Do you think it's an accident that North Korea, Iran and even our so called allies (Russia)are talking smack to Bush. They don't respect him and know he's an idiot, so they feel they can launch missiles, develop atomic weapons, tell Bush to go screw himself like Putin did a few days ago, regaurding democracy in Russia. The whole world sees him as a stupid, uncouth, barbarian. They don't even fear crossing him anymore. And with out military bogged down in Iraq, I feel like we're in more danger then ever.

As far as I could tell from reading this thread, the only complaints of Bush's vulgar language came from posters complaining about other posters complaining about it.
I didn't read a single post focusing on Bush's use of the word "shit". Most noted it only as a symptom of the Chimp's larger problem -- an immature worldview.
"They gotta get Hezboolah to stop all this shit, and -BAM- problem solved. See how simple it is Tony? You intellectallisticals always overthink things. You need to listen to someone like me-- someone who UNDERthinks stuff. Then we'll get shit done."
It's not Bush's language that embarrasses America, it's the underdeveloped THOUGHTS he expresses with that language.

Is it even possible that Tony Blair has any respect for Bush personally?
I've been in situations where because of internal politics (boss's son, for instance) I've been forced to tolerate, even support someone whose ideas were obviously stupid. I imagine Tony Blair finds himself in that position in this video.
You can almost hear Blair thinking, "what a fucking idiot this man is. Why do I have to listen to his crap? Why does he have to think I'M his best friend?"
Of course, Blair's largely to blame for that.

This clip is disturbing and sad on a couple of levels. I've seen the unedited section on the BBC site. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/help/3681938.stm)
Firstly it demonstrates that not only George Bush but Tony Blair as well actually BELIEVE that Syria (and probably Iran) acting as some great puppetmaster control radical hetrogenous disparate paramilitary groups across the region, such as Hezbollah. There is no nuance in their statements - no element of a vaguley sophisticated approach to the complexity of the politics of the region, or of Lebanon in particular.
Secondly, it shows how embarassingly supine Tony Blair is to the current American administration. You hear his offer to act as mediator (no doubt as some kind of proxy American Secretary of State), dismissed by Bush as he lets Blair know he "told Condi about your offer". Blair wasn't even offering to send the British Foreign Secretary - he wanted to go himself. Pathetic.

Oh, Bush and Blair are not the only ones who see an Iranian and Syrian connection to Hezbollah. Much of the world does as well (at least the unnuanced world, I guess). For example, see:

I have up a relatively snark-free post about Israel and Hezbollah. Call it naive and simple-minded but I don't recall anyone asking the basic questions that I have.
As for Bush cursing near an open mike, this is a non-issue. I'm actually a little surprised that he told Blair that he's not blaming the Lebanese gov't for this. But what's truly reprehensible is how Bush is greenlighting this thing for Israel as if it's a legitimate military strike.

Zortster:
I believe the message people get is that our president is a simpleton. He didn't "cut to the quick" of anything. He stated an obvious fact and represented it as a solution. An analogy presented by a previous poster is dead-on: "See, the problem with poverty is that the poor people just need to knock that shit off and get some money. The problem will be solved." Bush does this shit all the time. It is beyond embarrassing; it decimates our credibility.
Our commander in chief should be an articulate diplomat. Our commander in chief should have the mental agility of a chess master who is capable of thinking 10 moves ahead. Our commander in chief should not be the guy who's a "hoot" to take to the monster truck rally. Not the guy who asks you pull on his finger and then farts.
I am continually amazed that this guy got "elected" not once but twice! Who entrusts the presidency of the United States of America to the guy you'd rather have a beer with? What kind of judgement is this?

Have you ever noticed that when it comes down to an emergency or something important bush is sitting around eating, or talking about eating. After Katrina while thousands drowned in New Orleans and Mississippi bush is eating cake and strumming a guitar. Then in German when the Middle East is about to break out in full scale war he worries about his piece of the "pig" and when it comes down to talking with another head of state about the situation he stuffs his face with a roll.
Maybe if we sit him down near a buffet table and keep that table stocked we might be able to run the country without him.
And the world sees this country by his actions. Sad . Sad. sad.

I agree with Optimist. To reader Amused I will say what is missing is sophistication, if that word suits you better than nuance. I do expect the leader of the free world to be able to speak with his mouth closed and express himself like......like the college graduate he is (Harvard no less). I have heard more intelligent conversations at the coffee shop.
Most telling of this lack of sophistication and the trouble it will surely lead us into is this all too little covered topic. He said he is sending Condi in soon. All other criticisms of Condi aside, she is a woman. In the western world this is fine. But if you want to actually accomplish any thing in the way of a peaceful end to this, you don't send a woman in to deal with Islamist extremists. Now before you get all upset thinking that I am a biggot, it is not I, but they. Women in the east aren't allowed to be educcated, to drive, nor to even speak in many situations. They have NO respect for women, so sending a woman in to be the diplomat is like sending in the dog. There you go W, send Barney. It will be equally effective.

Nuance in that conversation is the difference between Syria being able to stop Hezbollah and Syrian not being able to stop them (whether they wish to or not is another matter).
If Syria is so all powerful, why don't Israel stop bombing the infrastructure and civilians of a neighbouring sovereign state and attack Syria?

I don't curse in public. Never have and never will. I also don't say stupid things in public about matters of which I have very little knowledge. I don't chew my food with my mouth open. Never have and never will. Little Boots constantly reminds the world that he is in such contempt of the entire world and its citizens that he doesn't have to follow the normal standards of manners and decorum. That's what the problem is with saying "shit" when you're acting in the capacity of representing the United States of America. That's the problem with uttering imbecile statements that exhibit a profound lack of insight and understanding of complex matters. I am so tired of people looking at this creep and listening to him and somehow confabulating him with the citizens of America. It will take decades to wash away the rut of stench he creates wherever he goes.

The synicism of Bushmeat is what everybody seems to be missing. On the one hand, the un-edited Bushmeat sez if Syria tells Hezb'allah to stop this sh*t it would be over in a minute. But then Bushmeat castigates Kofi Annan for suggesting that a cease-fire would bring an end to the fighting. To No w NOW,
Thank you. Sophistication is a much better word, and makes more sense. And I agree with you. I would hope our President would not chomp on food with his mouth open, and talk with food in his mouth. But the usage of "shit" doesn't bother me at all, especially since it was used in what was thought to be a private conversation.
On your point of the wisdom of sending Condi, I must disagree. There are, I believe, many within the Arab/Islamic countries that do not adhere to the cultural subjegation of women, whether it is in the extreme or moderation. There are growing voices in that community, here and abroad, that are calling for Islamic countries/communities to recognize the rights given to women in Islam. Using Condi, in her role as US Secretary of State, would demonstrate that in other countries/societies woman can and do hold significant positions of power. (and what a wonderful message that would send; who knows how many young women in Arab/Islamic countries would be inspired?).
In this I am reminded of Playboy, back in the 1970s I believe, sending Alex Haley to interview the leader of the American Nazi Party. A great move by Playboy, and a great interview that could not have been replicated by a blonde haired/blue eyed individual like me.
Finally, and you may have to do a free registration for this, below is a link to an article on changes within the Muslim community taking place in this country. It appeared in the Sacramento Bee.

The potty mouth isn't even the worst part; he is slouched in that chair, as if he were at his own private Texas ranch, talking with his mouth full of half-chewed food.
What a goddamn pig. Even the most die-hard fundamentalists wingnuts should be ashamed that his chimp is the president.

I don't think he thought the mic. was off; he's playing into the spin that the problem is Hizbollah. When we know the problem is Israel who provoked Hizbollah and now giving Israel a reason to attack or bomb another country. The US will be in this war very soon as soon as a reason is manufactured.

No doubt Peggy Noonan will masturbate after some vintage Boone's Farm apple wine while listening to this tape of her current favorite romantic fantasy figure, Commander Chimpy Chucklenuts. He chaws on a roll and simultanoeusly drawls like a real rough and tumble frontier Connecticut, I mean Texas, kinda manly man/guy. If only He was wearing a flightsuit and codpiece as well, then Peggy would be in carnal Rapture. As it is, I'm sure she will be writing in the WSJ any day about how safe and secure and yes, warm, she felt knowing that she and her traditional family and all her stuffed animals are under the protection of such a national fatherly Paragon of "Strong" (sic) Stern Strict Daddy Virtue. She'll say the Chardonnay-drinking liberal elite crowd sneer at Daddy's not-always-so-perfect table manners (it's only because He's so important and has so much on His mind and is so focused on protecting us) and the Riesling-drinking coastal cosmopolitan liberal elites will be all politically correct about Daddy's sometimes impolite but nonetheless manly cussing, (Daddy just talks tough sometimes because He's so important and is busy being tough in an evil world in order to protect me and us).
Meanwhile, Chimpy and Cheney and the neo-con-artists declare WW3, so here we go, Onward Christian Dollar Soldiers. A draft is a coming and it's on to regime change in Iran and Syria, the elctions in 2008 will be canceled----Chucklenuts is Permanent Supreme Intergalactic Wartime Unitary Executive Decider Chimp.
Permanent Neo-Con War is peace, freedom is slavery (ipods will be included, occasionally we do "carrots"), and massive ignorance in all segments of society is massive strength.

Honestly - it's as if most of the people here have never dealt with a bully before...
Let me inform you that ONE way of displaying power is to act like an ass or a buffoon with the knowledge that everybody else is too weak to do anything about it.
Bush is traipsing around the world acting like an ass because he CAN. Acting 'polite' or 'gracious' could be seen as 'bowing down' to those less powerful than himself, and therefore a sign of weakness.
Not to mention the corporate embed media acting as apologists and syncophants.
In any event - so Bush is going to send Condi to the middle east to handle the situation - Great! Now we KNOW we're doomed.

Instead of wasting any of our time focusing on this, why not keep our eyes on the ball – November elections. Begin to organize your precincts, volunteer with your local Democratic party. Prepare to start canvassing and getting on the phones and forget about this bullshit. It will be out of the news cycle in less than 24-hours. When Bush screws up (and he will continue to of course), let your friends who are on the fence know it. Let your congressman/senator know it. There's more important issues out there – the war, the slowing economy, North Korea, Iran, energy, net neutrality, etc.

I haven't read these comments but just so everyone knows, the reason the two Israelis were kidnapped was retaliation for a June 9 Israeli artillery hit on a Gaza beach which killed seven and wounded dozens.

"Newsflash!!! bush cursed! I have heard it all! Liberals will say anything to bash him"
I am not surprised that Bush curses. This is the same guy who flicked off a camera man. But what do surprise me is how the media and Bush supporters seem to forget that he did run based on "moral value" aka "Christian values". And the last time I checked,(I haven't gone to church in a long time) cursing was against Christian values.
So yes, it is newsworty when a president that campaigns on Christian values curse like a sailor.
But what is more newsworthy is his terse solution that the Bush gives about the problem in the Middle East.

You have a point. When I first saw that video of Bush chewing in that noisy, slack jawed way, like some sort of mental deficient, I laughed my head off.
But no, I think you may well be right, this is not about terrible table manners, because almost nobody has table manners that bad. This is about behaving like a pig because you know you can, it's about rubbing people's noses in the fact that you can act like a jerk because you have the power and you know nobody dares mention your ill manners.
If so, that says a great deal about what makes this guy tick, and none of it is good. In fact, it's pretty disturbing.

Oh, right. Eating is so awful--and so much worse than getting a BJ, which is only sex after all--while talking business to world leaders.
Really laughbale ot read all of your reidiculous outrage!
What's laughable is you all seem so concerned about his table manners when I have plenty of liberal friends who seem to believe manners are bourgeois.
People that eat for the simple necessity of getting in some nutrition between doing other things, which is often the case for people who have jobs, don't worry about what liberals might think about their facial expressions while doing so.
And the cussing stuff? Hilarious. "OH, he claims to be a CHRISTIAN--yadda, yadda, yadda."
What's more surprising is when a LIB or especially some RADICAL, DOES NOT swear. That should make the news.
How laughable and pathetic, grasping at straws.
