It was odd. "Harriet" said that Rumsfeld and Goss were not qualified because Rummy had never been in the army (he as in the navy and was previously Sec Def) and Goss had no CIA experience (in fact, he does, and was in charge of House CIA oversight for years).
Why did SNL pick on Bushies who were actually qualified (not right or good, necessarily, but the knock on those guys is not a lack of qualifications).
There are plenty of legit cronies they could have picked on, why get it wrong?
Admittedly, I almost feel sorry for H Miers- she made the mistake of accepting the nomination, but that mistake pales next to Bush's.

To me, Saturday Night Live will always mean Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, Jane Curtin, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Gilda Radner. (Showing my age, I guess). I don't recognise any of these people on these days - whenever I see a bit of SNL. But the jokes were better then, I think, because they had sharper teeth and took bigger risks.
Helen Thomas had a point when she said the press lot a lot of bite and focus after 9/11, for whatever reasons. I remember a story that shortly after 9/11, Bush was criticised by a couple of local anchormen on a local station - the WH, annoyed, put pressure on the station and the anchors were fired. Anyone have better details on this than my hazy memory? In any case, with so many journalists - like Thomas - being 'punished' with the loss of a seat in front or a press pass, like Dowd, along with the rise of entertainment based screamfests that were being passed off as 'news' by the likes of Fox, it's no wonder the press in the States has suffered so badly.
And no wonder why they're starting to bite back now with a vengeance. Now if only SNL could be funnier as well.

Nonny...
The disappearance of a free press goes deeper tham simply the impact of 9/11. Keith Olberman pointed out on his show when he did an interview with Joe Wilson that the White House had called him and his producers before the show and demanded that they call.
They sent lists of "heavily nuanced" questions and "suggestions" of how to conduct the interview. Olberman was hot and told them live that "I'll leave that kind of "journalism" for other news programs."
They have used access to information to manipulate and control the press and the President of NBC said that it is worse now than he has ever seen it in his entire career.
Additionally, insiders in the MSM have voiced concerns over consolidation of media conglomerates... who have a vested interest in filtering the news. Chief examples are Ruppert Murdock and Clear Channel. Murdock has been noted to go as far as to tell his FOX anchors exactly how to present stories, regardless of the facts.
In short... the blogs maybe the last gasp of unfiltered information, albeit it can get pretty bizarre at times depending on who you read.

Flint - good post, informative. Since it seems it was Daily Koz and AmericaBlog who 'outed' the gay escort 'journalist', the power of blogs does seem to be on the rise.
Tony Blair in this country has certainly taken a few pages out of the Bush book of media management, but for some reason, the press (print and television) remain more or less independent - more people still trust BBC more than they do the government. There've been any number of programs on Blair's attempts to manipulate the media - which backfires badly. I loved the one where they put an undercover 'intern' into the PR office who then exposed every trick and twist Labour used during the last general election to influence the vote. And when a petite 14 year old girl was arrested by police for throwing an egg at the campaign bus, the public went ape - NOT a very smart move on ol' Tony's part.

mudkitty - because the Tories fucked up and fucked over this country so badly for so long that they didn't stand a chance, not even against Tony Blair. The LibDems, the third party, picked up a surprising amount of seats in Parliament, because a large number of voters couldn't stand the Tories, but couldn't hold their noses and vote for Labour. It's an imperfect system, but frankly, as an American, it's still better than what we've got in Washington at the moment.

10.30.05 - 2:57 pm | #

Fanon - it's complicated, but, yes, you vote for a party. Sort of. The party decides on their Leader - Blair is Leader of the Labour Party, Michael Howard is currently Leader of the Conservative Party, but there's a bit battle going on to decide his successor after this last election (and a fight over exactly who gets to 'elect' him), and Charles Kennedy is the Leader of the Liberal Democrats. Which ever party wins the general election (has the most number of MPs elected to constituencies) becomes Prime Minister. Then there are the bi-elections...
Sheesh. American politics give me enough headache.

"Yeah, a majority government is the key. The members of parliament have to vote in favor of their party, so the leader can enact whatever legislation he wants."
- Mark
I don't know that you can say anything is the key really, but if I had to put my money on anything it would not be any particular governmental system.
I think the "key", if there is one is an informed populace with access to a free press, who take their responsibilities as citizens seriously.
That means taking the time to really study issues, asking critical questions, and holding the feet of their leaders to the fire to get complete and honest answers.
Governments reflect the collective state of mind of the governed, which as every one seems to be able to agree about the States... is pretty much of a mess. There's a message in that about us.

Some things I don't like in a parliamentary system: the leader can call an election whenever he likes. As well, court appointments (including the supreme court) don't even have to be question by the parliament. If we had one, Bush would have called (and won) an election right after the Iraq war and Miers would be on the SCOTUS.
