So I'm on the elliptical machine at the gym and see Fallafel Guy on Fox doing his "Talking Points Memo." I'm reading the cc and he's railing on the oil companies, Exxon in particular, for hurting America by exploiting fear to artificially inflate fuel prices. He basically called out Bush too for knowing exactly what is going on--and that all this Iran talk is just bullshit fear tactics.
Holy shit. I agreed with every damn thing out of his mouth. I really don't know what to do with this feeling. It's like everything I've ever known has been turned upside-down.

The $64,000 question I'm not hearing addressed is the issue of first use of nuclear weapons. I'm reminded of the expression that people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Now a nation that has the option of first use of nuclear weapons "on the table" looks hypocritical lecturing other nations on nuclear proliferation. I'd like to see the various politicians on the record on that specific issue. The U.S. is looking like a glass house indeed.

There was a post some time back, can't find it at the moment (might be a different thread - not feeling too great today, bear with me...) about mutterings over whether or not a military coup would be a good thing and such.
Strangely enough, as time goes on, it seems the left are gaining in being seen as supporting the military, for what it was SUPPOSED to be used for, and the right losing ground because the military is pissed off with being used by the WH and Rumsfeld for purposes they were never intended for, and paying for it with blood. Their own, and that on their hands.
I don't support this war. Understatement. I DO support the men and women in uniform, who are doing the best they can with no end in sight, with what crap they've been given by people who don't seem to care enough to even try to understand the problem.
I support the generals who tried to advise an ignorant and arrogant administration first that it was a bad idea, and second, if they were determined to do it anyway, please, please, for godsake, do it right. I support the generals who are pissed off with being ignored, used, humiliated, and scapegoated for the failures of the chickenhawks they've had to take orders from.
I'm a left-wing liberal and proud of it, and I SUPPORT OUR MILITARY - how is THAT for irony? I don't see a coup, per se, but I do see rebellion - more and more of those in uniform who matter are starting to point out one very cogent argument:
The US Armed Forces defend and protect the Constitution and the People of the United States. NOT George W. Bush. If the 'Decider' gives the military an order that violates the Constitution, they are honourbound to refuse.
Bush and Rumsfeld are losing the support of the military. Openly. That's a 'coup' enough for me.

In my view if everyone stopped buying gasoline, getting their cars repaired and getting convenience items at local Exxon/Mobil stations we can force the Exxon/Mobil Corporation to lower gasoline prices.
If we lessen the demand of Exxon/Mobil gasoline gasoline and car repairs at their local gasoline stations we will pressure the gasoline station owners to go to the parent company to lower their price.
We pressure Exxon/Mobil through their gasoline station owners.
Exxon/Mobil gives alot of money to the cheap labor GOPranos so that appears even more incentive to boycott their gasoline stations.
So if you currently buy Exxon/Mobil gasoline or any products or repairs at an Exxon/Mobil gasoline station, stop and switch over to another station.
We will foce Exxon/Mobil to lower their prices and the other companies will have to eventually follow suit when Exxon/Mobil drops their prices.
The price of gasoline on Long ISland has gone up to $3.00 a gallon.
Personally I drive an electric motorcycle so this does not affect me whatsoever but I do care about others who have to pay high gasoline prices.
Boycott exxon/mobil gasoline stations today. Don't even get your car repaired there or buy food or other convenience items there. Begin the pressure on their gasoline station owners and allow the law of supply and demand to take hold.

Is Ned anywhere close to beating Joe in the polls? I don't think the Bush approval poll is anything close to an indicator of how Joe is doing. Apparently most people in Connecticut still don't connect Joe to Bush, despite the obvious clues.
It's been awhile since I've seen anything on this, but the last poll had Joe still waaaay ahead of Ned. If this is still true, a debate would obviously hurt Joe's lead, so you can't really blame him for refusing to have a debate.

I hear you, Rasputin. My doctor told me to start taking Claritin daily at the beginning of March. He said this was going to be a very bad year for seasonal allergy sufferers and the only way I was going to keep on top of it was to start taking it ahead of time.

NO Work - This is BIG. If you don't go to work...think of the commerce that doesn't happen. Gas, parking, tolls, transit, breakfast, coffee, lunch, what ever your business buys and sells that day.
NO School - College/Young adults, it your future....you tell me. High school and lower...parents keep the kids home and get them involved. Never to young for democracy. Quality family time!
NO Driving - NO WHERE ! Everything LOCAL within' walking distance. If you have to drive to a rally carpool...FULL vehicles ONLY !
NO Shopping - Food, clothes, medicine...buy anything you need the day before. Extra butts or quit F*K BIG TABACCO. Put off car repairs and such or use MOM & POPs ONLY. Any purchasing should be VERY LOCAL!!!
NO On-Line - Ebay or other commerce. NO Home shopping or catalogs by phone.
NO Banking - The first of the month HUGE banking day. PUT IT OFF. Don't cash checks and deposit money. Pay bills on the 2nd. If you can of course.
NO Shipping - From letters and to pianos, from USPS to Fedex!

How about what you CAN do on May 1st:
Much more than a strike, a call to action. Any positive action, not any one certain action. More of an overall willingness to help fill other people's needs or chores, making life a little easier. Like "Pay It Forward' in every direction. On an individual to individual, group to individual, group to group help fest. Proof positive of the reactive universe. Sow good seeds and reap a good crop. PLUS PLUS PLUS.
General Idea: Peace and Giving. Passive Resistance. Overwhelming Presence. Millions joining together.
What to you could do with all that time:
BLOG - Home or at the public library. Maybe some cybercafes in on the 'idea' will offer free on-line time. Good gathering places. Computer savvy people help others sign up for email or teach them how to blog. Collect contact info for newsletters.
Volunteer - Hospitals (VA, Kids & General) care homes & hospices, homeless shelters, orphanages or animal shelters. An overwhelming number of people all showing up will get they're attention and support (hearts and minds)
Gather At ALL MEDIA OUTLETS. From NYC/NBC to ATLANTA/CNN to the local gazette. TAKE OUR MEDIA BACK. (shave and clean clothes). People in New York/Chicago/Atlanta/Miami (east coast spread to west) should be seen on TV outside the morning shows. Setup outside in front of traffic and weather cams. Radio stations, Newspaper offices. Just let them not cover the story that parked outside their door.
Gather at Government buildings & libraries (sit in), fire departments (visit, bring cookies),
Vigils - Cemeteries, town square, public parks. Clean up while you're there (garbage bags and gloves). Candles into the night?
Walk - From where to where? LOCAL!!! Recruiting offices to City Hall?
Assemble into teams that help on your own block. Paint a house, weed a garden, assist older people with spring cleaning or washing their windows and flushing gutters.
Do whatever it is YOU do professionally for free for someone who need your expertise. Take on an apprentice. Become a mentor or big bro/sis.
Give BLOOD while reading the Constitution. Buy a bunch of flags and plant them in everyone's yard on you block.
Talk amongst yourselves and with anyone you come in contact with about the issues we're pushing forth.
If you have to stay at home with the family and read the Bill of Rights.

Getting rid of the Taliban was a good thing. Too bad we didn't finish the job. It makes me sad when the reichwing trumpets Afghanistan as an unqualified success. Karzai is the mayor of Kabul (or at least the better neighborhoods of that city) not the President of a country. Opium production is up, the Taliban are making a comeback and operate openly in many parts of the country and, as you point out, burqas will be back in fashion soon.

Recently in my household, an influx of Divorcee refugees has forced me to experiment with communism.
Two buddies, both kicked out of their houses by their wives, have temporarily found refuge in my spare bedroom and on my sofa.
Given this extreme circumstance we had two choices. Being the Americans we are: Capitalism First.
We all bought an individual 30 pack Friday, the weekend brought friends of the refugees and our supply was soon depleted. I had enough for a second 30 pack Sat, but Refugee 1 did not. Refugee had enough for a 12 pack. Again, consumption ensued and our supply was depleted, except I found myself sharing some of the consumables by way of a lender's agreement to Refugee 1. Sunday was again a day of consumption and supplies were gone again. However, my only savings was in the form of an IOU from Refugee 1. Refugee 2 had money for further supplies but refused to agree to a Lending agreement, demanding cash. Two were without supply and endured taunting jibes from Ref.2 as he consumed his own supply.
Monday came, and both Ref1 and I received income and purchased consumables individually. Ref 2 was to borrow a technical term- "on the shit end of the stick". An Argument erupted and Chaos ensued. Violence was forthcoming. The Bastards Armistice was declared and Beer Communism has been born. We pool our economic resources, and when one of the Workers union has no beer, the others cheerfully supply it. As long as everyone pulls their weight within the Beer Communism party, we should enjoy a fruitful (if not sober) political life.

If people like me are going to respond effectively to anti-immigrant demagogues, we have to acknowledge those facts.
First, the net benefits to the U.S. economy from immigration, aside from the large gains to the immigrants themselves, are small. Realistic estimates suggest that immigration since 1980 has raised the total income of native-born Americans by no more than a fraction of 1 percent.
Second, while immigration may have raised overall income slightly, many of the worst-off native-born Americans are hurt by immigration — especially immigration from Mexico. But modest problems are still real problems, and immigration is becoming a major political issue. What are we going to do about it?
Realistically, we'll need to reduce the inflow of low-skill immigrants. ... But the harsh anti-immigration legislation passed by the House... legislation that would, among other things, make it a criminal act to provide an illegal immigrant with medical care — is simply immoral.
Meanwhile, Mr. Bush's plan for a "guest worker" program is clearly designed by and for corporate interests, who'd love to have a low-wage work force that couldn't vote.
Not only is it deeply un-American; it does nothing to reduce the adverse effect of immigration on wages. And because guest workers would face the prospect of deportation after a few years, they would have no incentive to become integrated into our society.
What about a guest-worker program that includes a clearer route to citizenship? I'd still be careful. ... it could all too easily ... create a permanent underclass of disenfranchised workers. We need to do something about immigration, and soon. That means that there isn’t anything left over to increase the income of the people already here.”
“My second negative point is that immigration reduces the wages of domestic workers who compete with immigrants. That’s just supply and demand: we’re talking about large increases in the number of low-skill workers relative to other inputs into production, so it’s inevitable that this means a fall in wages. Mr. Borjas and Mr. Katz have to go through a lot of number-crunching to turn that general proposition into specific estimates of the wage impact, but the general point seems impossible to deny.”

It is not observed here in the US because big business doesn't want us to gather and talk about labor conditions. If we did we might learn something about our fellow man. The American poor that I'm standing up for are African American construction worker like the ones who got passed over by Bush Co in the reconstruction projects in New Orleans.
If you read or remember... Haliburton was awarded a no-bid contract and they wouldn't hire any of the minority owned contractors or workers in Louisiana or Alabama or Mississippi... they went to Mexico and hired cheap labor and trucked them in!
Then they suspended the Davis-Bacon fair wage act so they could pay the Mexicans slave wages.

Well as the economists who have looked at the numbers know… if we add enough illegal aliens to the mix we can bring the whole Medicaid system down! There won’t be anyone left to defend keeping this welfare state program around because I’ll link it to exorbitant tax hikes!
Just think of it… an entire permanent underclass or poor powerless workers and the bonus is the Guest workers because they won’t even be able to vote!
