I understand the "why don't you serve" argument is a way of calling out the chickenhawks on their hypocrisy, but when it's oversimplified I don't buy it. I wouldn't enlist just because there's a military action I support, any more than I would join the police force just because I believe their job is necessary.

The people who promote the war in Iraq claim it's a battle for the fate of the world. They claim it's a cause at the moral level of defeating Hitler in World War II. I think the "why don't you enlist" argument always needs to specifically attack that premise: "*If you think it's that important*, why don't you enlist?" I'm not sure I'd even aim the question at the individual, since it's always an individual choice regardless. I'd ask, "Why aren't more supporters of the war enlisting?" But that might be too abstract and easy to dodge.

I did notice how the right-wing chicken hawk tried to blame liberals for the troops not having enough body armor, even though the republicans control the purse strings, who the defense contracts go to, the house/senate/executive branch/etc.

He's following the classic Rovian trick of setting up a false framing of the debate to skew public perception: liberals don't support the war in Iraq, therefore they don't support the troops. Total BS--he's trying to equate Bush's war policy with the value of American soldiers.

We need to call them out each and every time they pull this unethical and manipulative crap.

Regarding the comments about Randi's style -- I do love the fact that she doesn't back down or show mercy to fools. I've read that men often tend to interrupt women, and one way to deal with that is to keep talking over their interruptions. In her many years in the business, and due to her strong personality, she has clearly learned not to take shit from anyone.

An odd thing. Watching Randi's intonations and mannerisms a while back, I found myself reminded of Ann Coulter, of all people. Let me very quickly add that there is a *huge* difference in *content*, both emotional and factual. Randi's contempt comes from anger, not hate. And Randi doesn't "just make shit up," as Bill Maher put it (right to Coulter's face).

I generally don't like observations of the form "Just look at that fat bastard (or loud bitch, or sniveling twerp) -- you can just tell by watching them what scum they are." As a thought experiment I sometimes imagine people saying the opposite of what they're saying, and I often find I can imagine liking the looks and mannerisms of someone I dislike, or vice versa.

I guess this is a long way of saying yeah, Randi kicks ass, but the important thing is not only that she's tough, but that she's also right.

People who whine about Randi show a startling lack of grasp into the conservative mind. Huge swaths of conservatives are far more likely to respond to emotional tirades than the quieter, intellectual arguments preferred by most of those on the left.

Randi, with her pit-bull manner, will get her ideas into their heads. While all the "nice guys" like Colmes will just make liberals look weaker and weaker with their bloodless intellectual arguments.

Look at Gingrich. He didn't kick the left's ass by being polite. He did it by being angry and bombastic and reaching his constituency on the emotional level they understand best.

Another effective tool is humor. But very few people can be "funny" and get a political message across. John Stewart does it. So does Colbert & Franklin. But there aren't a lot who can. And what Randi does, works.

How is wanting our troops to come home undermining them? I have been that route before -- my brothers fought in Viet Nam and I heard no complaints from them about those calling for them to come home. Not to mention -- the call for better body armor and the need to take better care of the wounded when they come home. Let's just do a little for the men and women who give their lives and their health for service to this country. They deserve better from this country and this president.

It's so important to recognize what he's doing here, and it's a fine example of what the right has been doing for years. This guy must have just got out of Spin 101 and he was eager to try out his new talking points.

He's not even addressing her point, he's just taking a stick and poking her with it, taking one word and twisting, twisting, and twisting until it is a nice convenient talking point for him to throw out there. That is, the lie that the 'left doesn't support to troops,' which has an internal structure of BS logic that the right has been pressing onto Americans for years. The second he said that, every right winger cheered because, man did he show her. He cut through all of her critical analysis and hit her in the gut with a platitude, something our right wing goofballs can hang on to and feel good about. 'Support' is the key word that this guy found, and he took it, extrapolate a talking point out of it, and spun it around on her. And I guarantee half of the croud watching walked away with that simple talking point in their head as opposed to what Rhodes was saying, because it's so much easier than all the things Randi was saying.

Nevermind that Randi was actually talking about supporting the troops by actually DOING something to make their job easier, no, this guy's talking point trumps every single word she says because of the underlying structure of what he was saying.

I don't happen to like the Randi Rhodes or the Mike Malloy show, but she's seems much more sane, and thereby lethal, in these exchanges. We're dealing with kids who's memories may go no further than Clinton, or Bush before him. Even Reagan is an unknown quantity. They are faulted for not being more socially active. On the rare occassion they do so they just spout talking points gibberish as like this kid with his Kennedyesque haircut. Or they go onto blogs like this one and use the arts of debate that are learned from the Jerry Springer show. That's his TV show, I rather like his radio show.

What I don't get is, if I were a conservative/republican, I would feel embarrassed by BushCo. I wouldn't defend their actions. I may bring up past Republican presidents that -although liberals/democrats may disagree with their policies- were at least competent at their jobs. Look it up. The numbers in the 90's were much higher than the past three years. I said in the past three years they averaged 500 in LA. If you include the record numbers in 92 93 and 94, it will inflate the numbers you want to use. You said Iraq dead averages 600? so does that mean that the numbers the defense department puts out is wrong? We've been in Iraq for 3 years. I'll help you out and use round numbers so your little brain can comprehend. 2400 soldiers dead, 3 years. Therefor 2400/3=800 dead per year. That's 300 more per year in the PAST 3 years. So it's safer in LA for Americans than it is in Iraq. And we haven't even counted the number of dead Iraqi's in the past three years. The LA numbers are EVERYONE in LA. The Iraq numbers are just US soldiers. So if we add in the Iraqi dead, we are probably somewhere near 2000 dead a year. Try using real numbers and not selective.

The reason a 24 year old republican is being trotted around in front of the media is...

He has not been indicted. (yet)

He has not done anything, on the record, that can be used against him.

He is the only remaining young republican they could find that is articulate enough to be presented in public.

The US army needs more troops and would likely accept this lad, train him and put him to work if he were to apply. If he supports the army so fervently, loves his country and feels that there is a true threat to democracy and his way of life he should put on the uniform. Appearing on talk shows attacking liberals with talking points does not cut it as part of the war effort.

I am certain the listening audience would appreciate his sacrifices.

My father fought in WW II. He volunteered and did not follow his years of service with a military career. For part of the war he was a prisoner of the Japanese. It is at best a mealy mouthed expression of cowardice to hide behind the excuse that the armed services is a career as mentioned above.

The operative word is REFUSE. They could easily join the military, but they don't. They REFUSE to serve in the military. They REFUSE to serve their country. They REFUSE to put themselves in danger. They REFUSE to join the military during wartime.

They REFUSE. It's a choice and they REFUSE it. Don't use any other terminology. Don't say "You support the war, but you don't want to fight it", say "You support the war but you refuse to serve".

I recalled reading an article, and from memory it said that about 1/2 the worlds population was Muslim.

I've since found the article and admited an Error, approximately 1/5th of the worlds population is Muslim according to the article.

I was roomates with an Arab in NYC who has lived in the US for 23 years and after 9-11 he was told by his lawyer to not travel (even inside the country) due to fear of deportation. He and a lot of his friends are against this war for obvious reasons and while none of them liked Saddam - I am sad to say that every prediction they made about the fallout from the war has come true. I wish our administration had taken the time to talk to an arab before assuming they knew how we would be greeted there.

I remember a time in the not too distant past when it was Republicans in general who were railing on about the dangers of an all powerful Federal Government.

The Republican Far Right pointed to Waco and Ruby Ridge as proof of Government power run amuck, and they were right.
G. Gordon Liddy called Federal Agents "Jackbooted Thugs". Jesse Helms warned Clinton not to come to North Carolina without National Guard protection.

The Government has only increased it intrusive powers over the years: Clinton's Anti-Terrorist bill - thankfully watered down by Republicans -, and the Orwellian named USA PATRIOT act - which was passed without a chance for any member of Congress to even read it - to are just two examples.
Both of these bills were passed after "Terrorist" attacks BTW.

Republicans in general, and true Conservatives were against the Clinton bill, and rightly so, but most of them now defend the USA PATRIOT act.

It is not your average Republicans or Democrats that are a threat to Democracy in this country, it's the Corporate ownership of Republicans and Democrats in the Senate, along with the Corporate media, who cover up corruption in high places, encourage militarism and war, and promote division among the American people.

Have you ever noticed when a person starts to unite the American people they get their head blown off? It's no accident, it's a tactic.

So even if you count all of baghdad, you have to throw in the the civilian deaths also then, and that is going to make it many many many times worse than living in LA.

If I could find a number out there with any backup to it, I will do that calculation as well based on the 6.3 population number.

But I bet the number is easily 20,000 or 30,000.

If we needed 300,000 troops to secure Iraq, we needed to send in another 300,000 troops to secure the troops who were securing Iraq.

Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and while our government has woefully entagled us in Iraq, the Taliban and Al Queda have began to regain Afghanistan.

Only arguments right has that if a person points out that Iraq war is wrong and we aren't winning, they simply state that person isn't supporting the troops and that person is a traitor. They are too busy attacking anyone who raises issues that requires addressing and fast. Republicans and this Administration only knows how to attack to keep everyone else busy while they go about making money and staying in power and position of influence.
They do not have any knowledge or forsight to fix things or even carry out simple task efficiently and effectively. Only affectiveness I see them is wasting time and money to attack liberals and american public and not the terrorists they claim. Only terrorist they care about are the ones in our imagination. Real terrorists must remain out there to cause little havoc so they can fuel our fears.

This 24 year-old Ferguson is a sad example of many today's younger generation.

I like Randy Rhodes performance. There were many liberals who performed in calm and intelligent manner and came out superior. But in the end, it doesn't affect today's simple-minded Americans. Randy Rhodes probably tried to be reasonal and calm methods before but she also knows that republicans don't think this way. They only see fearmongering to win whatever debate they may be in. She by trying to drownout this little man is only way to do it.

Even if we assume that in the last 5 years the percentage of US Muslims has grown to 1% of the total American population, that's still just under 3 million Muslims (precisely 2,984,442).

No reputable source has ever claimed there are 10 million Muslims. Only Islamic organizations and special interest groups have made that claim.

My 24 year old daughter is doing her second tour in Iraq. She does it because she loves her job and she's good at it and she has incredible loyalty to her trrops. She hates this war and she hates Bush. Anyone of inlistment age that supports this war either needs to enlist or explain why they are cowards.
