We have way too much gasoline. Gas is down to $0.19 a gallon and the oil companies are hurting.

I know that I am partly to blame by insisting that cars run on trash.

I am therefore proposing a federal bailout to our oil companies because - hey if it were the other way around, you know the oil companies would help us.

On a positive note, we worked hard to save Welfare, fix Social Security and of course provide the free universal health care we all enjoy today.

But all this came at a high cost. As I speak, the gigantic national budget surplus is down to a perilously low $11 trillion dollars.

And don't get any ideas. That money is staying in the very successful lockbox. We're not touching it.

Of course, we could give economic aid to China, or lend money to the Saudis... again.

But right now we're already so loved by everyone in the world that American tourists can't even go over to Europe anymore... without getting hugged.

There are some of you that want to spend our money on some made-up war. To you I say: what part of "lockbox" don't you understand?

What if there's a hurricane or a tornado? Unlikely I know because of the Anti-Hurricane and Tornado Machine I was instrumental in helping to develop.

But... what if? What if the scientists are right and one of those giant glaciers hits Boston? That's why we have the lockbox!

As for immigration, solving that came at a heavy cost, and I personally regret the loss of California. However, the new Mexifornian economy is strong and el Presidente Schwarznegger is doing a great job.

There have been some setbacks. Unfortunately, the confirmation process for Supreme Court Justice Michael Moore was bitter and devisive. However, I could not be more proud of how the House and Senate pulled together to confirm the nomination of Chief Justice George Clooney.

Baseball, our national passtime, still lies under the shadow of steroid accusations. But I have faith in baseball commissioner George W. Bush when he says, "We will find the steroid users if we have to tap every phone in America!"

In 2001 when I came into office, our national security was the most important issue. The threat of terrorism was real.

Who knew that six years later, Afghanistan would be the most popular Spring Break destination? Or that Six Flags Tehran is the fastest growing amusement park in the Middle East?

And the scariest thing we Americans have to fear is ... Live From New York, its Saturday Night!

When JFK came to CA in 1959 for the presidential campaign, I was 13 years old and my brother who was 23 asked me if I wanted to go to the airport to see him as he came in. I said yes. We lined up to be in the second line. Then I got pushed back by the swarm of people who were clammoring to shake his hand. I got to shake his hand and I didn't wash it for a week. He was a truly reliable president as when things seemed wrong, He APOLOGIZED to the American People! Even tho he didn't have the correct information. But as soon as he realized that mistakes were made by the others in his cabinet, He apologized! That makes a president real! And that is why so many people were appalled at his passing at such a young age!

I tried to read all the way to the end, but I couldn't help it...Here we go:

1) We are in Iraq because of Straussian ideology (Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Bush, Cheney, etc...); Bush and co. want to remake the Middle East in our image, not because of oil (a bonus), fighting "terror" (an unwinnable war against an idea), or "freeing the Iraqi people" (propaganda).

2) Bush is avidly trying to cripple the American government (a strategy known as "starve the beast"). This tactic was first employed in the presidency by Mr. Reagan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starve_the_beast), sorry it's a "liberally controlled" source.

3) Tax cuts are only good for the financial elite (who can afford to pay for the services other citizens can't, since those services are cut and the money can go back to the wealthy).

4) Goodbye environment. The clear skies act, which repealled some of the environmental protections of the earlier clean air act.

5) Neo-Conservatives represent an uneasy alliance within the Republican party, between the traditional Moderates (money-Republicans) and the Religious Right (the Christian ideal idiots who turned out like crazy to vote Bush and co. into office, thanks to their campaigns, but the elected Republicans do nothing to make good on their campain promises...i.e. lots of talk about Pro-Life anti-abortion stuff, then the head of the Judiciary Comittee stating, after the election, that Congress has no intentions of repealling Roe v. Wade).

6) Catch phrase propaganda = lies(lookup Frank Luntz). The Republicans are all about finding the "right way" to phrase things to their advantage (Democrats do this to, but the Repbulicans are better at it and more malicious). Global Warming = Climate Change. Estate Tax = Death Tax. Iraq War = War on Terror. etc...

7) Separation of church and state. Neo-Conservatives are trying to break the barrier down between church and state...a clear violation of the Constitution.

Neo-Conservatives support Intelligent Design (a.k.a. creationism taught in schools as science)...see previous entry.

9) The economy. I love the Republican boasting of the economy bouncing back. First, if there are any more jobs now then before, they are service-sector jobs..."Welcome to McDonald's, may I help you?", not manufacturing jobs (China, Mexico, anywhere but here) or others. So, the unemployement rate roughly stays the same, which as someone mentioned before, includes only those people "laid-off" (not fired) in the last 6 months who are currently seeking employement (if you were a vice president of some company that tanked a year ago and you still don't have a job, you are not included). What happens if China cashes in our debt to them (something that is not in their best interest, but possible none the less). More tax cuts, more budget deficits ("Reagan proved in the '80's that deficits don't matter" - Cheney), more instability in our economy and for the rest of the world, less value for the dollar. Sum = crappy economy

btw, Reagan did prove that trickle down economics ("voodoo economics" - G.H.W. Bush) does not work. The wealthy will spend the money they get back on luxury goods or hoard it. They will not reinvest it as the policy clearly needs to be successful.

9) Privatization of Social Security. Read "Mein Kampf" for Hitler's view on how to create a fascist state (an early step, privatize social programs). Creating savings accounts for people's income that would've gone to Social Security so they "have control of their money" will result in even less financially secure retired people, not "fixing" Social Security.

10) International Relations. If Bush is such a wonderful president, why doesn't the rest of the world think so (and I mean EVERY other country on this planet).

11) Bush is a retard. Why would the American people elect a mentally challenged monkey to lead our country (whose track record includes running 3 or 4 companies into the ground before starting his career in politics).

12) He graduated from Yale? yes, in history. Did he earn his degree? no... it is common practice in academia, unfortunately, to pass the children of wealthy donors to the university. For example, consider this popular inner dialog of a professor reading a student's essay..."How did this person graduate from high school, writing with an elementary school education...Oh, G.W. Bush wrote it (son of G.H.W. Bush, who donated millions of dollars to the univeristy earlier this year)...Let's give him a D-, high enough to pass, low enough that I'm not giving out grades. Anyone who uses words like "misunderestimated" and "hispanically," would not pass a freshman composition class (required for every degree at every university). On the other hand, daddy earned his grades, the professors did not need to waive him on...he's not a retard.

12) Failing to represent the American people, the government's first and foremost responsibility. The Republicans do not represent the average American, but they fooled the idiots into thinking that they do. What a wonderful ruse!

13) Lying about WMD. Why not? He lied about Katrina...(there is footage of W. watching a private report, X days before Katrina hit, by some meteorolgy expert telling him that this hurricane, Katrina, is going to do large-scale damage to New Orleans...later, he announces that no one could have forseen the damage dealt by Katrina). And cherry picking intelligence...former White House aides (e.g. Richard Clark) have said that this administration has made up its mind before reviewing any intelligence and new intelligence has no effect on their decisions (short of 9/11). Also, most of the quoted intelligence about Iraq comes from the guy who was kicked out of Iraq in the '70's-'80's and told the administration what they wanted to hear, so they "had a leg to stand on" for invading the country that had no connection to 9/11 or terrorism.

14) The War on Terror is just like a War on Triangles, a war against an idea with no clear enemy or objective. Oh wait, the enemy is all terrorists in the world and the objective is to eradicate terrorism from Earth. Bush Sr. himself said you cannot eradicate terrorism, the best you can hope for is to reduce it to a nuisance.

15) Big Daddy is right that the 29% approval rating for Bush means nothing...for Bush...for reelection. It does show the American people's dissatification with his policies (and honesty). It also means that many constituents in his "idiot-base" (those that vote on morals) may cast protest votes just because they are unhappy. And it also means that, perhaps more liberals that usually don't vote, are so fed up with this administration that they will finally get off their duffs and vote in this midterm.

There are many more points, but these are good for the normal Neo-Conservative (Bush Republican) bashing.

furthering the discussion of neo-cons, it's important to understand that neo-cons don't actually *believe* in fundamentalist nonsense like intelligent design or posting the ten commandments in courtrooms. they just think that religion is the easiest way to control the uninformed electorate (or the commoners, or peasants, or whatever you want to call it - big daddy is a perfect example: an easily manipulated schmoe).

dominionism is just fine as far as neo-cons are concerned. just so long as you have a leader that is perceived as "strong" and can constantly manipulate the populace with lies.

when most of the electorate mistakenly believes that they are being led by so-called "moral values", it's much easier to do things like go to war on false pretenses, ignore laws you don't like, use patriotism as a way to attack dissenters, and constantly rile the rest into a state of perpetual fear.

neo-conservatism isn't just the belief that liberalism will fail and give rise to fascism (one of strauss' basic beliefs), it's the outright disgust with liberalism and desire that liberalism should fail. hence the need to demonize liberals and paint them as "traitors" and the attempt to silence them as a voice in political discussion.

probably the easiest way to do that is to create a situation where even the word 'liberal' is considered an insult; every time a suspected 'liberal' attempts to enter a discussion, what the person has to say is completely disregarded, and the person's integrity, honesty and patriotism are impugned. the goal is to characterize all liberals as dangerous and make pariahs out of them.

To follow up a bit on McWalker’s excellent post, here goes a brief, incomplete list of reasons of why GW Bush is such a bad president for the US:

- The war in Iraq is a strategic mistake, not a tactical mistake. Despite what he “says” about trying to protect the security of the American people, justifying domestic wire taps of American citizens, huge spending supplements to his cronies and war-profiteering etc, America is mostly likely less safe because of Bush’s policies. Ergo, Bush and his Iraq war (devised before 9/11 even happened) will be the poster child for middle east terrorists for years to come.

- If we had a sound energy policy (not a secret one), we would have been better off. Brazil established one in the 70s after the first oil crisis. Shouldn’t a previous oil executive (Bush) know better? (Reagan, the guy who dismantled Jimmy Carter's solar panels on the White House and) Clinton is partly to blame for the current energy situation as well, as he should have been more rigorous about this in the 90s while he had a chance, though I ‘m sure the Rebublican congress had a hand in stalling him), then we could have backstepped from the turbulent Middle eastern politics, not throw gasoline on it to ignite new fires in that region.

Even though, I think high gas prices are actually a good thing (for the planet, not necessarily for the American consumer), since it will finally wake up the latter that there is an energy crisis, and that we have to start paying more for using up 25% of the world’s energy.

- Utter disregard for the Constitution – habeas corpus, and unlawful searches and seizures… what more can I say. He is blatantly breaking the law. Read it in black in white : He needs a court order if he has reasonable suspicion, and he definitely needs to give American citizens the right to a trial by their peers! Jeez, its not that hard to see, people, and everyone (Dems, Repubs and independents) should be outraged by this.

- He doesn’t listen to experts. He is not surrounded by experts, but rather by sycophantic yes men. He has no sense of history (see latest Roling Stone article).

- threatening to use nuclear arms on Iran? That is totally luney! Sounds like he really is into Armeggedon wish fulfillment.

- Stealing the 2000 election (Florida), and possibly the 2004 election (Ohio voting shenanigans); I don’t need to go into the details for this crowd.

- trying to dismantle Social Security. At the very least, if we do nothing now (and believe that’s better than having this inept president touch the lockbox), retirees for the next 20- 30 years will still get at least 70% of what they paid in. The Boomer generation will die out by 2040, and then Social Security will be back in the black. Just wait for the cycles…things will equilibrate. If we need a short term fix, then let’s do it. He’s already doing that with emergency supplements for the “War we Didn’t need to Fight”.

- “Fighting them there, so they won’t fight here…” is a crock of shit. Diplomacy, or at the very least clandestine special operations tactics (if the CIA actually worked) should be the highest priority and order of the day in the actual “War against Fundamentalist Religious Zealouts”! (Not some abstract , never ending “War on Terror”).

- Most of the world – The WORLD! – does not respect him, and many outright despise him.
- Trashing the environment…started with Kyoto, and who knows what else, since the US corporated controlled media barely brings up

- Education….duh!

As an outsider and 'lurker', I've just read the entire dialog from start to finish. While reading, I noted the self-styled 'Big Daddy' (a/k/a BD) declaring himself, a conservative (whatever that is), the winner of a 'baker's dozen' of debates with liberals (whatever they are), as well as including the gift offering of a little scorecard.

The only trouble is, I neither observed a debate (just brickbats and the tirelessly grating sound of axes being ground), nor any victory over anything or anyone.

As neither liberal (nor demokin), nor conservative (nor republicrat), I nevertheless regard the lies and intellectual dishonesty of the Right with profound disdain. There is nothing there to respect.

To be fair, we observed a rather similarly high incidence of intellectual dishonesty on the Left throughout the 1970's and early 1980's--though it is to be admitted this came with considerably less invective and outright hatred, and a good deal more willingness to cooperate rather than defect, and to compromise in order to solve serious problems.

Anyone thinking the current party in power is acting to address the truly depressing problems facing us--problems likely to destroy us if left unaddressed--simply isn't paying attention.

Marketplace mysticism isn't going to fix what is wrong. Nor will starting an endless series of military actions abroad, or promoting nasty erosions of liberty at home, or eating still further into already stressed natural capital.

Mr. BD may have something valid to offer here on this forum, but so far I haven't any evidence of it.

Umemployment "count" is such a stupid thing in this country.

The other day I talked to my students about who is "counted" in "unemployment".

They never realised that those who go BEYOND unemployment officially, in other words 'run out' of it, as so many do

All name calling and finger pointing aside, I'm sure you'll all agree that President Bush is acting like a third world President in a lot of ways. To wit:
1. He's cowtowing to our next door neighbor, Mexico and letting them dictate our domestic and foreign policy.
2. He's used the military to further his own personal agenda in his crusade in Iraq, using them as policemen
3. He's being guided by the nose on a lot of issues by the pols and other 'advisors' in government, while scandel rife representatives push through compromise bills full of pork and other nonsense spending to fatten the wallets of their constituants
4. He's running the country against the will of the people and in spite of what the mainstream deems is right.
Bottom line: He's drug the office and the country down the most dangerous path in a time where there are nothing but dangerous paths. I liken him to the Cooledge/Hoover of our times (both were Republican by the way)
The only thing that irritates me more is the fact that THERE ARE NO VIABLE CANDIDATES IN EITHER PARTY! When some leaders of real integrity that dont fretter show up finally, please wake me up. Till then, pray for a miracle and hope that we dont get to a point of Civil War or other insurrection in this country.

The problem with Big Daddy is he's forgotten it's not a game between us and them.

We live in the same country.

"Liberals" didn't lose when G.W.B was elected. We all lost. He has made our country a demonstrably worse place to live. He has made being an american a demonstrably worse nationality to be if you live outside of the United States.

Whether or not the Republicans maintain control of the Senate or the House is irrelevant. It's not a game and it's not a competition between anyone. The elections have a direct impact on the lives of people participating in them.

So for Big Daddy to come in and gloat about who won what elections and keeping score as if he has a bet in Vegas about who is going to win is sad and shows an extreme lack of awareness regarding the state of the country not only internally but externally as well.

The problem with someone like Big Daddy is he's forgotten the Declaration and The Constitution were written with ALL people in mind. Not just americans and certainly not just Republicans.

Big Daddy likes to make light of the 29% approval rating of GWB and says "so what". The "so what" means that people are unhappy with their leadership Big Daddy. The people are unhappy with the direction their country is heading as a whole. It means 71% of the people feel they are worse off for having GWB as president.

It's not a reflection of how they see the future. It's not a reflection of any future leader who takes office. It's a direct reflection of the state of the country.

The republicans haven't won anything and the democrats haven't lost. 71% of the people feel they've lost Big Daddy while obviously you're one of the 29% who still feel you're "winning".

You're a great guy Big Daddy. You're one of those guys who doesn't care about anyone else as long as your name is at the top and unfortunately that seems to be the attitude of the current whitehouse administration. And it's not the name "United States Of America" they like to see at the top, it's "The Republican Party" to the detriment of 71% of the people.

Who cares about that 29% approval rating? 71% of your fellow citizens Big Daddy. Take a moment to realise that most people don't feel like they've "won" anything in the last 8 years.

but what's the point? You live in the same world as the rest of us. If you don't have the conscience to see it now you won't even when you "lose".

Gore would have been a pretty good president. Kerry would have sucked almost as bad as Bush does, but not quite. Clinton was a really good politician, and a fairly good president.

America used 2 b almost a superpower. Now, the entire world hates us. Believe me, i lived in Europe 4 a while and every1 was like "you're from AMERICA? gods, your president sucks."
