I think last Tuesday's election was not just a comment about the Iraqi war, but also a rejection of many of the recent scare tactics of religious conservatives. To claim that the religious right has a monopoly on God and good has been rejected.
I think Americans are awakening to the entire message that Jesus preached that includes not just non-violence, but seeking justice for the poor, the lonely, the widows (read Iraq), and rejecting corruption on a scale we haven't seen for a long time. With the Republicans controlling the House, the Senate and the White House over the past six years, we have seen efforts to legislate the support of torture, spy on US citizens, allow Vice President Chaney's Halliburton to steal billions of tax dollars, eviscerate our environmental protections, demonize healthy dissent and support the clandestine operation of hidden prison camps. This is certainly not fulfilling the message of Jesus Christ,
Americans rejected the hypocrisy of Tom (the Hammer) Delay, Jack Ambramoff, Mark Foley, Pasor Ted, Duke Cunningham, Governor George Ryan, Representative Bob Ney, and so many other conservatives caught with their proverbial pants down.
On November 7, Amercians stood up to reject tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% of Americans while cutting student aid, housing for the homeless, education programs for children with special needs and veterans benefits.
This is what I think we can draw from last week's election results.
Peace
