It's not a platform for leftist tripe.

"Perhaps we can look forward to massive protests against this in the streets of Western cities, as the greens demand the Chinese stop polluting and pillaging and the leftard unionists and assorted fellow-travellers demand an end to Chinese colonialism?"
We'll both be long dead before those scumbags get round to doing that. These are the same vermin who want to give communism another chance, even after 70+ million dead. Oh wait, i'm mistaken, what happened then is just not their brand of communism/socialism.
Utopia is just around the corner, just hand over all your possessions and it'll come, honest.

The only thing that's just around the corner, MK is slavery for all of us.
Civil war or the barcode--which will happen first?

This ingress of Chinese into Africa has been going on for a long time. They are quite happy to have the likes of Mugabe in power and as they quietly foot his bills they are getting his country in exchange. At least it is not the hated 'white man' that is taking over, but they will soon find out that the new 'bwana' is not quite as kind as the last one.
I wonder if we'll see protests in Trafalgar Square, rock concerts, lots of money given for the cause........

How is China acting any different from any other major power?
Why was Musharif in Pakistan allowed to throw judges and lawyers in jail and hijack the elections (not to mention kill Bhutto.) France sent in its troops to save the dictator in to Chad to remain in power. The US supports the regime in Nigeria ... builds military bases to prop up dictators in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Yemen, Dubai etc.
China follows whatever the AU wants ... the reality is that China would deal with anyone in control, it just wants to do business. Nothing more, nothing less. The West really needs to stop babying Africans ... get the liberals (and yes, neo-cons are leftist liberals) out of foreign policy and force the Africans to figure their own shit out. Worked for India, China, Vietnam, Signapore, South Korea (was a dictatorship until 198 , Taiwan (dictatorship until 1996) etc.

This article makes me even more worried than before about the fate of the Pacific (including NZ) at the hands of China. Rich in resources, relatively unpopulated, no defense forces to speak of, with a bunch of unprincipled leaders happy to sell out their people's future for a few dollars.
What will be OUR fate as the Chinese demand for resources grows ever nore rapacious??

ej, the role of China in the Pacific is going to be a huge worry over the next 25 years, and the "leaders" of Australia and NZ seem blind to it.
Either that, or they've already tacitly admitted that there's damn-all they can do to stop Chinese expansionism.

If there's one thing the Clark government will be truly despised for a generation or so hence (and god knows, there's plenty of despicable stuff to choose from ) it'll be the dumbshit, premature Free Trade Agreement with China.
