I have been reading about all these industrious food bloggers making jams and stuff with their summer bounty. but at last! an idea that shouts my name: steep the fruit in alcohol. oh yes!

Isn't that the principle behind Rumtopf? Never heard the name "bachelor's jam" but it certainly fits.

Ana, I had never heard of rumtopf, but is identical to confiture--except for the alcohol. I have only seen it done in glass, but I found rumtopf jars of stoneware that would be ideal in which to use a saucer to keep the fruit submerged to keep it fermenting properly. Thanks for the new name and the use of rum, too.
