I'm thrilled to have found your site! I stumbled upon it while looking for a recipe for confit d'oignon.
The ladies of Edenton were onto something: As you probably know, raspberry leaf tea is said to be very good for "female troubles".

Re: raspberry leaf tea, my sister drank it by the quart when she was pregnant with my oldest nephew. She was two weeks late going into labor, and she was desperate to get things going! The package read, "do not drink if pregnant, as it might cause uterine contractions or premature labor." My sister was like, "umm, yes. That's the point!" Unfortunately, the raspberry leaf tea didn't get her labor pains going, and we only just stopped her from getting out the excercise trampoline and jumping on it!
Anyway, I found a recipe for something called "Edenton Cakes" that were supposedly made and eaten with raspberry leaf tea at those Edenton tea parties. I posted the recipe on my blog, if you want to see it.

This blog is so interesting! I love to read about historical food and recipes. It is amazing that people were able to make so much with such limited kitchen resources.

These ladies had more bravery than most Americans today. Today, we just go along with whatever our government wants us to, without thinking for ourselves. These women had foresight, and the true American spirit!

And since this was a true story, I may say that these women of yore were "fighters" in their own right. Their opposition to the high tax imposed on tea were shown by them through peaceful manner - yes, by sipping tea. I wonder if this well-mannered way of showing disgust is still feasible nowadays...I think not.
