I used to just turn on the tape recorder and start doing some chord progressions, just me, no drum track or nothing. And every once in a while when I listened back through them I'd hear something and think 'whoa, that's pretty cool. Now which chords are those?' Was in a garage band in high school that never ventured out of the garage. We pretty much sucked except for the guy who played lead.
