See, I disagree with the call on Full Metal Jacket. I love the entire movie. I thought Vincent D'Onofrio was fantastic as Pvt. Pile. BUT ... Gunny Ermey is the coolest.

Gus Hasford's novel that the movie was based on (The Short-Timers) was much better.

I haven't read the book, but I have no problem believing that.

Thing is, I used to share some of these guys feelings about only the first half of FMJ being good, but after doing some time in the military, my perspective has changed a little. I dislike the preachy tone it takes, but its stark portrayal and gritty realism was cool.
