I'll grudingly agree with your selection of Back in Black over Highway to Hell, though only because of its well-knownness. I wonder if the album would have been as commercially successful with Bon still at the helm. Alas we will never know.

An aside about Appetite, in my travels to local fairs and such where today's kids congregate, GnR shirts appear to have become the modern version of the Led Zeppelin shirts that kids in my generation (I'm 33) wore back in the day.
I feel lucky to have seen Guns on the Appetite tour (Madison Square Garden's Felt Forum, headlining a triple-bill) in a small venue. Soon after that, therey were arena/stadium gods and the opportunity to see them in a more intimate setting vanished.

Good call on the Slash / Joe Perry comparison. This doesn't take anything away from either player, but Slash is so clearly influenced by Perry's style and sound I'm surprised it hasn't been acknowledged more...
