Gravatar [Keanu Reeves impersonation] WHOAH...

I don't know about actor opposites this early in the morning, but I do know that Ronnie Milsap is the poor man's Roy Orbison.... Appropo of nothing.

Gravatar In what alternate reality are you living in, exactly? Anyone with half a knowledge in film history AT LEAST acknowledges Keanu Reeves' work in the comedic role of Bill and Ted.
Unless...
... this blog is a joke, right?

Gravatar Yes, I acknowledge that Bill and Ted was a comedy. Again, though, I restate: "funny things happen in spite of him rather than because of him."

Disagree if you must.

Gravatar OK, so are you saying you didn't find Bill and Ted funny, or are you going to say he wasn't aware it was a comedy, thus not contributing to the comedic aspect in it?... ¬_¬

Besides, plenty of funny stuff in YouTube with Keanu in it, from both films and interviews. One just has to look a bit harder than the first couple of spots that show up when you put the subject in question on the search field. Not having something against the man in the first place also helps. :

Gravatar I not saying that B&E isn't funny. It's funny enough. Nor am I saying that he isn't aware of the comedy. I'm just saying that he's incapable of consciously contributing to it.

Gravatar And you state that based on what? :/

Gravatar Um, his filmography?

Gravatar For what it's worth, I get what you are saying. I like Keanu Reeves (the Replacements is one of my favorite movies, and he is a pretty pony in my book), but he is definitely a "straight man."

Some people just have an innate quirky funniness to them...I think it's the overt facial expressions. Reeves seems too aware of his own face, to concerned about his outward appearance to embrace that inner goofball.

That doesn't make him a bad person...just not comedic.

Gravatar Yes. Exactly that, Maggie. I really like some of his movies, but he is, like you say, very self aware and I think a comedian (at least in the context of Fred Willard kind of comedy) needs to give the appearance of not being so self aware.

Gravatar OK, excuse me. I didn't notice I stepped in an alternative universe where stuff like Parenthood, I Love you to Death or Freaked never happened.
How can somebody look at Ted and say Keanu's too concerned about his outward appearance to embrace his inner goofball is something that absolutely surpasses me.

This is particularly strange, since "quirky" and "goofball" have been adjectives often used to define Keanu Reeves time and again. I certainly would NOT reduce him to just that, but to the extent of saying he's NOT quirky?! O.o

Gravatar Yab, I don't know you. And you don't know me. But you obviously feel differently about Keanu Reeves than I do. The simple truth about anything non-quantifiable is that different folks are going to have different opinions about 'em. What you perceive and "quirky" or "goofball" I feel is contrived and self-conscious.

I've made my opinion known in my own house, as it were. I accept that you don't agree with me. I would ask that you do the same.

Gravatar In this universe, Keanu's funniest role is, sadly, his turn as Prince John in "Much Ado About Nothing."

I mean, geez Yab, are you his agent or his Mom or something?

Gravatar 'Fly I was going to ask that same question. Who knew Keanu Reeves comedic abilities would spark such debate?

Nice job Cullen! Way to stir the old pot!

Gravatar Yeah. Apparently the guy did a Technorati search for Keanu, my site came up, and he came here to argue.

Gravatar I dare you to watch this interview -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N...h? v=Nj6KoH19Y28

and still claim that Keanu is not funny, because that's one of the funniest interviews of any actor that I've had the fortune to come across.

Gravatar Lord, Cullen, it seems that you have blasphemed against Saint Reeves. You'd best don the rent sack cloth and pour ashes upon your head, like, pronto, dude.

Gravatar Keanu can be funny, but the funniest thing about Keanu is that whenever someone thinks they are taking the easy way out by criticizing him, as opposed to- oh - just about any other actor, is that coming up against OPPOSING opinions throws them for quite a loop. Like, OMG, WTF is this, people are defending Keanu? Uh, yeah it MUST be either Keanu himself trolling blogs, or his 3 besotted fans trolling blogs!
In this instance it's a bit less pronounced, but I was waiting for it, and sure enough, 9:21 pm and 12:42 am eventually resort to just that.

Yes, a mere word of respectful support for Keanu, and the once self-assured nay-sayer is kompletely konfuzzled.

Now that's funny.

Gravatar Why, whenever somebody comes along with an opposing perspective on this, somebody ALWAYS has to come up with that lame ass retort? No, I'm not his mom or his agent. I'm not Keanu either, by the way. Trying to trash his work by spiting on his non-comedic roles, is too, a boring, boring tendency...

You see, blog-owner, I don't have problem with different people having different opinions: that's fairly normal and even healthy. One man's contrived is another man's quirk, although you have to admit the two views are so different, I had to at least inquire about it...

What isn't healthy and somewhat irks me, is this pervasive tendency for automatic scorn, when this particular actor is concerned. Or throw mocking retorts, instead of responding to the points actually presented. Or imply you're some deranged pseudo-religious nut, just because you're defending something. It's like people think they have a free reign to trash, whenever Keanu's name comes up. Some comments around here are text books examples of this.

But if conflicting views make you in some way uncomfortable, I won't cause any more distress; it is your "house", after all. Excuse me for googling/ technorating/ whatevering.

Gravatar Wow. I never thought Keanu Reeves would have inspired such zealotry. I am tempted to close the comments before this really gets out of hand, but I must admit I'm finding this interesting from a sociological point of view. And apparently I'm offering text-book strawman arguments and not focusing on the issue at hand.

Look, Reevers, the long and short of it is that I don't really care that much. This entire post has little to do about Reeves other than to point out that I believe he's at the opposite end of an acting scale from Fred Willard. Take from that what you will.

Gravatar WHOAH....

Gravatar Dude, this is far from getting out of hand. This is possibly one of the calmest discussions of Keanu I've ever seen.

I mean, even this -> http://www.freewebtown.com/whoai...e/swat/ 0005.htm was more out of hand than this, and that one's already considered one of our more peaceful raids.

Gravatar Whoa.

Gravatar Yab - don't be an ignoramus. If you simply came in here and said, "I disagree, I think Keanu is underrated," and said why, you'd have been fine. As it was, your first comment called the post an alternate reality and the entire blog a joke.

You reacted not like a fan of the actor but someone with an actual stake in his well-being or bottom line - hence my comment. Like him or not, you're just taking it a wee bit hard that others don't care much for him.

Personally, I think he ranges from decent to unconvincing, depending on the part - he was not irreplaceable in any single one of his roles, up to and including his star turns. Neo comes closest to being the part that he makes his own, ranging down to "Much Ado", where he could have been replaced by Carrot Top without hurting the film.

Gravatar Yes, a mere word of respectful support for Keanu, and the once self-assured nay-sayer is kompletely konfuzzled.

Amanda, my comment focused on the antics of what appears to be Zealots For Keanu™, over-reacting and under thinking. I happen to like him as an actor. But I don't pop into new blogs and start arguments about his acting skills.

Make from this what you will.
