Gravatar this is a really interesting point, and i think i'm convinced. the creation of the space where utopia can occur -- is this idea, reminiscent of the rhetoric of holy lands and spiritual enclaves, part of what the liberal humanist idea of 'freedom' has always included? thus lending an 'exceptionalism' to whomever is a part of that space's creation and propagation. i tried to get at this in my post. so what was an intellectual and spiritual ideal in more's time is both a patriotic and acquisitive ideal in the U.S. -- from a global perspective, are both 'elitist?'

how has the relationship between freedom, happiness, and pleasure developed from the early modern era to globalization? an unwieldy but perhaps vital question.
