I always enjoy looking at those old sideways maps with East on the top - it gives a cool new perspective to things we're used to looking at in a certain way. Any idea when North moved to the top?

Gravatar Take a look to the link that I gave under "north on top":

Gravatar gotcha - thanks.

Gravatar The term Asia may have originated with Hittites. See, for example Gorny in Across the Anatolian Plateau (Hopkins, ed., 2002), who proposes the Hittite word Assuwa for the western part of modern Turkey as the origin of the word Asia. This makes sense because ancient Greeks also referred to western Anatolia as Asia (Georgacas, Names for the Asia Minor Peninsula, 1971).
