In British usage, "to knock up" means (or used to mean) "to awaken by knocking on the door." And "knocked up" also means "worn out." (See, briefly, http://dictionary.reference.com/...earch?q=knock.)
At least one British writer for children was annoyed to have her prose tampered with by an American publisher. It was explained to her that, across the water, "the milkman knocked up his customers" meant something entirely different from "the friendly milkman rapped on the door every morning to make sure the household was up on time for work and school".....
