I think the argument being put forward from other Cushitic languages is that, if at some point in Hebrew's history, gender was switched for plural adjectives, then on the basis that numbers are always adjectival and above one always plural, they should be of feminine form for masculine nouns. It's not particularly convincing, but that's the argument, it seems.
