On the other hand, there are quite a few English words that have always sounded Yiddish to me. The one that stands out the most is tumult, but both unkempt and disheveled come in closely behind. Funny how words relating to chaos sound Yiddish... any chance that any of them have Yiddish or Hebrew connections?


Gravatar It seems that a lot of people think "tumult" sounds Yiddish. There's a reason - there's a Yiddish word "tummel" that basically means the same thing. The Yiddish comes from an identical German word, and it seems that both the English and German come from the same source.
