I guess I wasn't clear - I think that Utica (and perhaps Ithaca) come from atik not vatik.
As far as the Vatican, I can't find anything to connect it. It seems to come from an Etruscan town called Vaticum. No one talks about Phoenician settlement there.

The BBC are shortly screening a feature-length docu-drama about Hannibal Barca; I got to see a preview (in HDTV! :o)) the other day. Much to my disappointment they went with the English-mangled-Latin-mangled Punic names, dragged backwards through a linguistic hedge. (Apart from that, it was very good.)
