Could it be that כתם in Akkadian... means to cover, to hide, to keep secret (Arabic), then at some stage, people were embarassed by the signs of niddah and referred to the color of the (menstruation) blood as that to be kept 'secret"?


Gravatar Minor point - shouldn't that be 'k'tumim' rather than 'ketomim'? (similarly, adumim, yerukim, k'xulim, v'rudim, etc.) - simple plural of the pa'ol adjective, if I'm not mistaken.
