Could there be a deeper connection between fish and serpent?
We know the monster fo chaos at the bottom of the sea was always portrayed as serpentine by the west semites at least (Ta-yamt for ti-amat). There is also the stories of Moses staff in Exodus, where it becomes a serpent by the burning bush and later literally a tanin in Pharaoh's court, although it has always been interpreted to be the same as seprent.
