Gravatar Any relation to the Aramaic tnn, 'tooth'?

Gravatar I assume the Aramaic tnn is the cognate of the Hebrew shein.

Gravatar I find it interesting that we sing about תנינים in the zemer "Menucha ve-Simcha". Nothing like spending Shabbat afternoon singing about sea-dragons.

Interesting.

Will you elaborate on this idea? Cognate in what way specifically? Thanks.

Gravatar I didn't actually find in any Aramaic dictionary תנן for tooth, but rather שן. Klein also doesn't mention any Semitic cognates for the Hebrew שן that start with "T".

One thing I did find - Klein says tanin is related to tan תן - jackal.

Gravatar FWIW: An eel of New Zealand is called "tuna".

Gravatar Jordan: Menucha vesimcha is traditionally sung on shabbat night, not afternoon! Where is the tradition going??

But yes, the song is listing in that verse the wonders of G-d's creation (and thus the wonderous rest and joy on the seventh day).
