Could there be a connection between שכר , SoKHoR (profit) and SCoRE, "to achieve credit or success"?

Numerous examples, David, of causitives forms in English with the same word as the basic verb. In Hebrew these should ?always translate to two words.
Such as: to walk (around the park) ללכת / to walk (a dog) להלך/להוליך; drive as נסע or הסיע. Filled (as in "the cup is filled with water") can be used as נמלא or מומלא. (Some would say that נמלא is better as "full", but people use filled in such a way.) Or the tricky "remember" as זכר or נזכר.
And less commonly you can create causatives in English with resultatives: "I drank him under the table." But the pair here would be שתה/השקה.
Ben Yehuda's suggestion that שכר is related to אגר has little to recommend it.
Regarding the confusion of qal and hif'il, there is a whole series of verbs that in Biblical Hebrew are in the qal but in Rabbinic Hebrew are in the pi''el or hif'il. So you have a good precedent there; כבר קדמוך רבנן!

And as for לשכור/להשכיר, as you probably know this distinction is disappearing in spoken Hebrew (as it does with ללוות/להלוות and לשאול/להשאיל), so maybe looking for ways to remember the difference isn't worth the effort...
