Gravatar I own and enjoy the etymological book of hebrew by Klein and I am also greatly interested in etymology. I am looking for an etymological book of the yiddish language and, more precisely at the moment in the yiddish word : bulbe (meaning potato) Could this word come from the almost identical word "bulbe" in lithuanian? Is lithuanian a possible source for yiddish words?
Regards
Genevieve Gembries

Gravatar From Lithuanian -- maybe. As well as from Ukranian, Belorussian or west dialects of Russian. But more probably from Polish, from which it was borrowed into languages mentioned or even German. It is akin to English "bulb".
