I think if the Latin and Persian roots are connected, it is more likely that they share a common Indo-European root - ghos-ti or ghostis.
In Russian, "ghost'" (with a soft t at the end) means "guest", so it seems this would confirm the theory?

There's no question the Russian is related to the Latin/ Greek - I'm just not sure about the particular Persian word that Steinsaltz quotes.
