Any relation to פטוטרת "stem" (perhaps because it also breaks forth)?

Gravatar מועד is also 'appointment' in Arabic, derived from 'wav aiyn dalet' to promise. When two persons promise to meet each other at a certain time, they have mawedמועד.

Gravatar Remarking on peh-tet-resh:
In ancient Rome, a PaTRon was one who released a slave.
And, with a bit of metathesis: PRoTo- means first or foremost.

Gravatar Remarking on 'idud' עידוד - encouragement, "do it again!". Perhaps you can GoaD me, with a guttural ayin, to continue with these connections.

I can ADD some more, l'olam va'ED. :-)

Gravatar Alex -

Yes, Klein and others say it comes from the same source. Thanks, I wasn't familiar with the word.

Kevin -

There's a similar concept in Hebrew - ohel moed - "tent of meeting".

Gravatar 'eid' (with an aleph) appears in devarim 32.

Gravatar It does, but while the Gemara in Avoda Zara interprets it as "festival", the pshat seems really to be "misfortune".

Gravatar hey dave, nice entry. i was just wishing my muslim coworker a happy break-fast. any connection to last week's parsha: וְאֵד, יַעֲלֶה מִן-הָאָרֶץ? (Bereishit Perek Bet, Pasuk Vav). Anyway, "shkoi'ach". Regards to the family. ~ Shlomo and family in the Diaspora

Gravatar Hey Shlomo, great to see you here. I actually wrote about אד in the following post:

Gravatar >Steinsaltz notes that this may be seen as a proof that the Mishna was not originally written down, but passed over orally.

While I happen to favor this view, I don't see how this is a proof for that position. It is equally plausible that two manuscript recensions existed.

Gravatar I guess because the two sound so similar. A manuscript mistake would more likely confuse two letters that look similar - resh and dalet, for example.

Gravatar interesting, but for me the import of this holiday is much more than an exercise in etymology . . . it means 2 days with alternate side of street parking rules suspended.
