Hi Andrea,

To me defining weblogs in terms of a frequently updated website consisting of dated entries arranged in reverse chronological order sounds rather technical, and does not describe what a blog does. Because of that I like Elmine Wijnia's definition of weblogs better (paper: http://elmine.wijnia.com/weblog/...ingweblogs.pdf)

A weblog is a webpage on which the author publishes pieces with the intention to start conversationsBoth types of definitions combined give a picture of what a weblog looks like, and what it is for.

best,

Ton

Hi Ton,

thanks for your reply - especially as it is the first one in my blog, which got me quite excited.

I think combining the two definitions is an excellent way of looking at it, but what I'm wondering about is, if the intention-to-start-a-conversation-definition excludes blogs who are written by people just for themselves (for whatever reason) and maybe even password protected. Or are these authors engaging in a one-person-conversation then?

The problem is, that blogs are used by different people for different things, I guess. Would you say that people who use blogs as a kind of diary just for their own eyes to look at, then are using the "technology" for something it's not really intended for? But who defines that what something is really for?

best,
Andrea
