My husbands family owns about 400 acres of land in southern Utah and it is full of texas gold and black tea...it even has the oil drills waiting. we scratch our heads all the time. Robert Redford is to be thanked for that one, only HE is allowed to buy mountains in Utah, the rest of us have to look at them. N

Oh, the 'Cassandro' in me trembles.
If we found petrogold bubbling out of the center of the country with taps from border to border, we'd just kiss off every gurgle of experience of the past several years.
Hi octane burners would be the going thing and we'd prove we could waste it faster than anybody.
Now about refineries? Any idea on those?
Why, of course. If it will help us waste a resource, and one that we can add a few more spicy taxes to; then let's build refineries. Think of the jobs for 'wetbacks' it will provide.
Building refineries are jobs Americans just won't do. And Mexico needs the money....no; US Currency.
As I say, I've got CRS: Cassandra Reflex Syndrome.

Actually it will be a good thing because right now the only thing left proping up the U.S. Dollar is the fact that the OPEC nations are only trading in dollars. So all the countries that purchase oil from OPEC nations have to convert their currency into dollars. Good for us!
The one complaint I have about big oil is that they don't want to make more refineries. Despite the obvious line of thought that its the eviromentalists. The fact is that they have plausable deniability jacking up oil prices saying they arn't allowec to drill more when really the choke point at the refineries. We need to build a bunch of them.

US consumption is around 9,000,000 barrels a day, so this supply would last for around 400-500 days. We could not tell OPEC to kiss off.
As for why is isn't being used now: oil from shale is more expensive to extract, from what I've heard, so it only makes sense to do so as prices increase.

Oh, and that 9,000,000 I think is just from cars. Factor in boats, airplanes, plastics, whatever else, and it's a lot more I imagine.

Well mgroves, the new data from Bakken (they've been studying it since 1951) suggests a conservative estimate of 200 billion barrels. That would increase our oil reserves by a factor of 10 putting us on par with Saudi Arabia which has 260 billion barrels. Keep in mind too, these are just current estimates. Then there's the Green River Formation in Colorado, Wyoming, & Utah. The Energy Department and private industry estimate that GRF holds a trillion barrels in Colorado — about the same amount as the entire world's known reserves of conventional oil. The entire Green River Formation might hold as much as 2 trillion barrels. Not to mention that estimates of our offshore reserves (hello California and Florida) and ANWR would add even more. And it's becoming economically and technologically feasible to go after that oil. So yes... piss off Saudi royals, get lost Iran, pucker-up and kiss our ass Chavez...

I'm sure we'll tap into those sources, eventually. Four dollar a gallon gas just isn't reason enough. Let's go ahead and use up THEIR resources first.
