i *loved* this movie. one thing: "deewangi-deewangi" got irritating after a while. normally i love that bollywood songs are actually long enough to develop and be enjoyed to a satisfying degree.
but it's not very non-indian friendly. i mean, honestly: how many times can we approach a woman in a sari from behind to have her suddenly whip around and "OMG!!! it's...! it's....! i don't know who that is. honey, who is that? who? oh, okay."
other than that, i really really loved this movie - just like "bhool bhulaiyaa", it captured an era of bollywood over-the-topness without getting smarmy or snarky about it.
oops - forgot one other quibble: who in the blazes does the subtitles!!!? terrible! just awful! i mean, "common" instead of "come on"!? "queue" instad of "cue"!? did they use an electronic translator or something!? such a top-flight movie really deserves to be treated much better and so do the non-hindi-speaking fans.

Hi threenorns, I liked the movie too, enough to wait and get the DVD. Needless to say, I'm a SRK fan! LOL
I thought deewangi-deewangi was fun, and enough to pique interest of non-fans to want and go find out who those stars are!
Hmm... I'm not too sure about the subtitles, but I thought it was good enough and didn't really notice the typos. Maybe I was too engrossed in the movie to realize!

i thought so, too, at first, but so many of the women just look so similar. there are very few really distinct faces like preity zinta - most of them are a variation of rani mukherjee - this is to my eye, ppl, i know those who grew up with them can tell the difference no problem.
the men was a totally different story - they're easy to distinguish and my bf has a HUGE collection of bollywood movies, past and present. "oh, look! dharmindra!" and he'll pull five of dharmindra's greatest hits. "hey! rishi kapur!" and out comes Karz (always loved that movie!).
trust me - the subtitles are atrocious. not just spellingwise, grammatically some of it is completely incomprehensible.

lol - can't help it. my bf is hindu one thing we have in common is an annoying memory that records the widest array of minutiae but can't remember when our anniversary is (neither of us can figure it out so we picked st patrick's day) or when my mother's birthday is or how much the rent is (have to look up last month's cheque every time, lol).
hey!!! you ever see "coolie"? honest to gods, that is the first time i actually saw in action the phrase "a manly strut" - amitabh bachchan has possibly THE best, most macho without looking italian mobster, entrance EVER!

oh - also, other movies i really really love are "veer-zaara", "kal ho na ho", "main hoon na", "karan-arjun" (another reincarnation story - very dramatickal, lol), and "sholay" - one thing that disappointed me about sholay, however, was the issue of widowhood. that movie had a chance to strike a blow for widows but the director cheaped out at the last second.
