Gravatar Well, my review is up. I really wanted to love the movie and to disagree with my brother's final analysis, but... all in all, there were good parts and bad parts, but as a cohesive movie it was pretty weak.

Gravatar Thanks, Jim!

Good food for thought on that one. I hope to blog a link to it this evening.

Gravatar Thanks, I guess, for the link, but I think you let Rev. Mr. Havard, our diocesan s.f., off way too easily. Maybe this forms part of your Lenten fast, which is admirable, but look at this:

The movie has a potential masochistic influence ...

If we flash back to Rev. Mr. Havard's December comments about his knowing a lot of priest pedophiles, we begin to wonder where his mind usually spends its time. Here is another clue:

I feel that the audiences will not understand Jesus’ message by watching this shrewdly hyped movie any more than watching hours of violence on home TV sets.

Finally, true to form, we do not bother with accuracy. At the end of the review:

Gravatar Yeah, I agree, TPOTC was rubbish.
I preferred the suggested homosexual relationship and dodgy theology of "The Last Temptation of Christ" and the big hair and profanity of "Superstar". They were much superior to Gibson's twaddle...

What I mean is, are you reviewers for real?

You get a movie that is unequally in versimillitude, has high production standards, and follows 85% of the Gospels and Christian Tradition without modernist twists and most people can do nothing but whine and be petty!!

Gravatar The Last Temptation of Christ. Hmm. I had not given much thought to that movie for a long time. Our Pauline literature teacher, an Eastern Orthodox priest, made the film required for our class. He almost chuckled when I told him that my archbishop -- in a move highly out of character -- had forbidden Catholics to see it, but he allowed me to read the book instead.

I wonder how many Catholic theology teachers will require The Passion of the Christ? I think I could give you an answer in a very round number!

Gravatar Oh, and we must have watched videotapes of both Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell every single year in our archdiocesan high school. I could probably sing most of the score of each one today!
