I think it will help him at least as much as it hurts him.
My impression has been that Kerry is deliberately trying to box the bishops into a corner. But maybe Dale has a point here. He could have taken mass in St. Louis but he did not.
It could also be that Kerry's mind keeps changing on the subject. Perhaps he was indeed itching for a brawl but then had second thoughts. Ot it could be that this argument is being fought out among his advisors.
In other words, the Spectator may have had a good source, but the dynamics may be more complicated. Politics can be like that.

While I can appreciate what you are saying, I'm not quite there. The most I'd say for the veracity of the rumor is that the more radical idiots in the campaign may have floated it, but the odds of it occurring are nil.
I'm going to borrow what my friend Bryan said a couple weeks back about the original story--it's a dangerous tactic, because you are guaranteed to alienate a portion of the electorate without necessarily rallying people to your cause. Almost no one is denied communion, so the sympathy angle would be attenuated, to say the least.
That, and I've been burned by Spectator reporting on religious issues once before, so I'm not going to rally to their defense again any time soon.
