Gravatar Peace, Dale.

And our tradition of 14-year-old martyrs ... are you thinking of the victims of school gun violence? Or something else?

Gravatar Read the following from AP Religion Writer, Brian Murphy, from today's Chicago Tribune, and note how slyly it's phrased:

"Benedict's effort to reach out to Jews carries an added dimension because of his membership in the Hitler Youth and later as a conscript into the German army during World War II. He said he was forced into both roles."

Rather a subtle indictment couched. in the last sentence than a piece of clear objective reporting.

I didn't know that TASS had moved over to the US after the disintegration of the USSR, but obviously some reporters and columnists have just as much objectivity.

Gravatar Welcome to The Template. Wherein MSM establish a certain plotline with a figure in the news. And repeat and repeat and repeat, regardless of its accuracy or timeliness- aka Where The Person Is Now. As in George W. Bush is Stupid Cowboy. Bill Clinton is Charming Rogue. Remembering regular headlines under the previous pontificate, regular variations of 'Frail Pope Cracks Down.' Now we have 'Pope Who Served In Hitler Youth' to be regurgiatated. Would be of greater concern. Except that MSM has real competition these days. Competitors less likely to establish these Templates.

Gravatar Todd:

In the sense of every child being murdered by a mindset that devalues human life and denies the Imago Dei in one's fellow man, I suppose one can stretch the concept of martyrdom to fit.

But--and I suspect you knew this--I was using the term "martyr" in the original sense: a deliberate and willed shedding of one's own blood for Christ. In that sense, there are vanishingly few examples of that from American history involving teens. If any.

Gravatar John:

Ugh--that was bad. It managed to be pathetic and obvious at the same time. Not to mention horrible grammar on his part--conscription is always compelled. It's not like B-16 volunteer for either the HY or the Wehrmacht.

Gravatar Gerard:

"Templates: Sure Beats Thinking!"

More proof that far worse than MSM's bias is its determination to be lazy.

Gravatar "He said he was forced into both roles."

Sooo...is that an implication that he is lying? As in 'said'? He 'said' (so alleged) that he was 'forced' (so alleged) into both roles. (we secretly think he's a Nazi, folks, but we're not tellin' YOU that!!)

I swear. These news people...can they get any more pathetic?
