"The problem is that we are a selfish, materialistic, bratty generation." Whoop. Whoop. Alarms and buzzers for its accuracy. Even if she was the one who called for female deacons. Even if a Freep copy editor allowed the misspelling of the 20th Century's best-known and most controversial encyclical as Humanity Vitae. The last few weeks- Terri Schiavo DeathWatch to Josef Ratzinger Job Promotion- appears to have had a beneficial effect on elements of MSM. Not a gripefest here. No token radicals to start bleating about female priests/contraception/ad nauseum. Just a new understanding that The Church Still Matters. Only one The Church, of course.

Gerard:
That's definitely one of the sections I liked a lot. And, as much as I am dubious about the idea, ordaining women to the diaconate is still up for legitimate debate.
About the only one who consistently irritated me was the Grosse Pointe attorney. My retiring, mind-gelded bride said he "needed to be hit in the head with a sock full of wood screws." That's one of my late father-in-law's favorite lines.
But even he had a couple of good points, submerged in the rhetoric.

Hello Dale,
Three guesses which one is most likely to have lifetime subscriptions to America and NCR. Your first two don't count.
But the AmChurch commando aside, the rest of the group was surprisngly heartening. Normally with a forum like this you get maybe four AmChurch dissenters, a couple conservatives and maybe a squish. I took part in such a forum myself sponsored by the local fishwrap which ended up along those lines.
And this Dan McGuire guy - I really like the way he thinks.
* Women deacons can find support in Scripture but I think that it would be a singularly bad idea right now given the confusion in gender complementarity and roles within the Church. I fear it would send all the wrong messages.
