Yes, "Coronation"
But since JPII dumped the whole social-reign-of-Christ, Papal-tiara-as-symbol-of-papal-sovereignty, Unam-Sanctam thing, no one has any idea what to call the thing you do to get the pope officially in his chair.
Too bad about those highly politically incorrect teachings on the proper relationship between the state and the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

It's posts like this (and the great fiskings) that keep me coming back, Dale! Had me laughing to my core.

Sorry, Dale, but inadequate as "installation" is, I greatly prefer it to the "Inaugural Mass" CNN kept flashing on the screen during Benedict XVI's installation. I kept expecting them to rank Pope Benedict's homily right behind John F. Kennedy's.

"Investiture" is a better term than installation, which was, at least, originally an ecclesiastical term. When a monk was fully professed, traditionally he or she would be led to their assigned permanent seat in choir, or their stall, as part of the ceremony. Hence, installation. (This still occurs in communities whose chapels are set up with assigned seats. I happen to be associated with the Camaldolese, who do not handle things that way.)
As the key symbolic acts of the service did not involve a crown, but items that could be considered vestments -- a ring and a pallium -- investiture would work.

Oh, and I must agree -- every time I see an announcement for the installation of some prelate or other, I expect to see the credit line "technical installation support by Sears Appliance Service", or some such.

DLL Hell! The bane of Windows™ users for ages!
Actually, it's purgatory -- after performing sufficient works of merit, or having them performed on your behalf (i.e., installing Linux), you can get out.

The Installation of The Pontiff. How Home Depot can you get. Actually, not a world of difference. And isn't Pontiff such a cool name? Dontcha love the occasional uncomfortable tone in your local AnchorBlonde's voice when she reads that word off the TelePrompter? Can practically hear the "ooh, gross- he doesn't want me to have an affair with the General Manager to get the 6:00 job" in her noggin.

Although I'm a Mac user (mostly,) I actually knew what DLL meant. Does that make me quasigeeky? B)
I was just thinking that maybe we could 'baptize' the analogy, but I didn't have enough time to figure out the second 'L.'
"Doctrine/Liturgy/Latin?" Still no conflict that I see...

Try "Enthronement"
though, technically, that's what happens when he Takes Control of the Lateran Basilica.

My question, which has at no time been adequately answered, is whether a papal installation requires a regular or a Phillips-head screwdriver.
My preference is O.J. and Stoli, personally.

Actually, while I favor "investiture" for describing the ritual, the Italian for the rite was Inizio -- Commencement would be the closest English translation.

When I read this, I couldn't help picturing Frozone, from "The Incredibles", as he presses that remote control, flipping the wall in his apartment:
"Hon-ey, WHERE'S my SuperPope?! I just installed him yesterday..."
