I've become concerned about my two daughters and what they prefer to wear. It is amazing to see sloppy and revealing the kids are dressing over the last few years.

I can't stand 'Bratz' either but my dislike is geared more toward the commercialism rather than how they dress, etc. Therefore, I don't disagree with most of your rant. However, you sound kinda like that Dana Carvey SNL skit ("Why, back in MY day....") or something my grandparents were saying 25 years ago. We're getting old, too, I suppose.

Gravatar Oh, do not underestimate my revulsion at the commercial end--not even a little bit. The "thou shalt be a mindless consumer of trendy goods" is about 45-49% of the reason for my bile.

This hacks me off about as much as the skankywear:

And, yes, we are getting old. But even with my withering brain, I don't remember anything remotely like this crap.

Gravatar "Back in my day, we didn't go for this 'dental hygeine' nonsense. We were a bunch of no-brush, infected pyorrhea mouths--and we liked it!"

I loved that sketch.

Gravatar Actually, the two phenomena are linked at the hip, but that's another post.

Gravatar Dale,

Love your blog, share your deep loathing for the Bratz. I was walking through Home Depot today when I stopped dead in my tracks. Confronting me was a box of Bratz wallpaper, manufactured so that the visual reinforcement training aspect of pimpin' your pre-teen daughter wouldn't be neglected. Here's a link to a sample.

Please note the second one from the left. She's wearing a rosary on her belt, as a fashion accessory.

A rosary.

Please shred them, Dale. You're the only hope of us blogless and incensed Catholic fathers of young girls.

Thanks,
Steve

Gravatar Trust me, you're not over-reacting. As the father of two girls (soon-to-be-eight, and 5), I can't believe any father (or mother, for that matter) could conceive of letting his daughter dress like that. Mercifully, both mine still prefer to dress up like princesses. Disney may have its vices, but at least its characters are (mostly) clothed.

Gravatar This post comes right on the heels of a shopping trip to the toy store. I was in search of a tape recorder (how archaic!) for my 4 1/2 year-old and was directed to the "electronics department." No, no tape recorder, but kiddie TVs, DVD players, boom boxes--and many more gadgets, I'm sure, but at that point my eyes had started to glaze over. Better yet was my encounter with the "Bratz Rock Angelz" display. We are a "Bratz-free" household and I'm sickened that anyone would buy these for their daughter/granddaughter/niece.
