Gravatar Yeah, I made a few comments on Fr. Timothy's discourse.

Didn't get as far as the part about dialogue though.

Gravatar Yeah, Fr. Timothy is a bit of a goofball. Sad to say he is a former head of the Dominican order. He was on the altar at a church I attended in Dallas a few years back, looking rather dishevelled and acting rather disoriented during the Mass (didn't seem to know what to do). Not knowing anything about him, I wondered what was going on. Afterwards, he explained who he was. Not surprised to find him popping up and pushing this nonsense.

Gravatar He's a sweet chap, like the Joyce-Grenfell-like nursery school teacher (US kindergarten?) who keeps saying: "Now, children, just play nicely together. I know you had it first, Hilary, but you have to let Hans have a leeetle go with it, and then it's Edward's turn. Why don't you find another nice toy to play with?"

When Hans, etc, have actually turned a machine-gun on the Church, this isn't a terribly helpful attitude.

Gravatar "People generally quarrel because they cannot argue. And it is extraordinary to notice how few people in the modern world can argue. This is why there are so many quarrels, breaking out again and again, and never coming to any natural end. People do not seem to understand even the first principle of all argument: that people must agree in order to disagree. Still less do their imaginations stretch to anything so remote as the end or object of all argument: that they should disagree in order to agree."
— G. K. Chesterton, on "dialogue," more or less.

Gravatar My comment is somewhat off-topic, but is there a good parish in that general area? We vacation near there in the summer and this will be our first summer vacation as a family of Catholics, so any advice would be appreciated. My normal method for finding a church while traveling is to Google the area and look for one that is easy to find, geographically, which would obviously have been a bad idea in this case.

Gravatar cmjr:

Depends what you mean by "in the area."

I can give you some suggestions in order of familiarity/comfort:

(1) St. Stephen in Lake City. Superb, really--headed up by a widower who sought ordination late in life. I remember him hearing confessions right up to the minute Mass was scheduled to begin. Affable, too (which does matter, let's admit) and friendly parishioners. It will be our vacation parish--again. Even though it means a roughly 80 mile round trip. So let it be written, so let it be done.

(2) St. Anne's in Cadillac. Decent liturgy--*if* you avoid the 6pm Sunday "Contemporary" Mass, which features 70s-style rock tunes and gender neutral language when describing the Almighty. Hopefully you'll get the younger Polish priest celebrating the Mass. St. Anne's Sunday morning Mass is broadcast on Channel 9 or 7/4, I can't remember which. I recommend watching it to get a feel for it.

(3) St. Cecilia's in Clare. Was pretty good the one time we were there, but a visiting priest was conducting the Mass. A good friend of mine advises me that the regular priest is a showman, but didn't report anything really horrific.

Oops--forgive the transposed letters.

Ack.

Gravatar Slight correction, dear husband: that priest at St. Stephen's was late starting Mass because he was still hearing confessions, about the best reason I can come up with.

And that was his introductory Mass, too. I really want to move to Lake City for that priest!

Gravatar Wow. That's impressive. Senator Palpa- er, I mean, Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold has taught them well.

peace,

Gravatar Thanks, Dale! We'll probably check out St. Anne's. Can't pre-view it from here, though, I live in MD most of the time. (I don't suppose you know anything about the parishes around Chelsea, MI? That's the other place in MI we'll be on a weekend this year. I added my email, if you'd prefer answering privately.)

Gravatar This was BEAUTIFUL. I have a new standard image for extreme drunkenness. (The Pogues!!) Also I don't feel so bad about my parish any more, which, though it has the Worst "Choir" In The World -- Guinness has been notified -- is not galloping full speed ahead into heresy. (Maybe it's because there's an Episcopal church down the street.)

Gravatar I can help on the Chelsea Michigan question, hopefully not too late, but it would be good to go Manchester where Fr. Tim is pastor.

We lost him at my parish and I still miss him.

Barry

Gravatar I should mention that Fr. Tim I mentioned in Manchester is NOT the Fr. Tim listed above in the comments.
