You know, Dale, in may ways -- concerning capital punishment and Islam -- JPII was not much different than liberal Protestants or popular Evangelicals in terms of mushiness and the refusal to admit that God actually can generate wrath.

Would it be nasty to say that Fr. Overton seems to be letting his inner Episcopalian out ... or to note that I saw the initials "S.J." in the article byline and thought "that explains the inner Episcobabble!"
sigh. 'Tis the season. Peace on earth, and mercy to poor sinners, of whom I am the chief.
peace,

Fr. Overber seems to stand in relation to religion roughly as tofu does to red meat.

That's pretty much it. There are a lot of people who want all of the benefits of Catholicism and none of the discipleship. Sadly, some of them are ordained.
Though, given the weak water offered up in the article, I think Fr. is starting to veer into artificial tofu territory.

"If God truly loves unconditionally, then not even screwing the poor and building a nuclear death ray to fry puppies and redwoods from one of the Lagrange Points is going to hack Himherit off."
Now you've done it.
I need a new keyboard now.
(And a good price on one of those death rays.)

Amazing how he brings up John the Baptist in Luke, which says John preached a baptism of repentance for forgiveness from sin, and completely misses the repentance part. Or was that what the social justice blather was about? What about the harder, more personal sins?
I guess that's the 'new theology' to quote a DRE I know. Said DRE liked the Jesus incarnated because He loves us interpretation of one of these handouts, too.

Okay, my favourite line?
Sin apparently went out with Vatican II, along with Latin, habits, incense, moral seriousness and reading comprehension.
I snorted in my beer. One for the archives.

There's something odd about a world in which an atheist like me has more respect for the traditions of Christian theology and moral philosophy than a Jesuit does... 8-).

That gave me an aneurysm.
Is John chapter 19 considered apocryphal? I'm so confused.
