Ah, the call of free and untrammeled alcoholism and 9-month winters!
"Mmmm, drunken frost-bitey."

I would be jealous, actually, except that I know that employment prospects up there are even worse than they are down here. That's why the cost of living is so low - there are few people and fewer jobs.
If I were independently wealthy, or if I made enough to have a second residence, I'd be up there in a heartbeat.

Yep. As I keep saying to Zach, "Detroit debts and UP income are a bad combination."

Heh. It's that little thrill I get out of getting a lawyer to say "oh, that's evil!"
re: Detroit debts and UP income - yeah, I know. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Good reason for those who haven't rung up their Detroit debts to show wisdom and prudence, don't you think?
peace,

Dale, you may appreciate this piece on the making of the film "Anatomy of a Murder," titled, "When Hollywood came to the UP":

Jimmy Stewart showed you can be successful practicing law in the Upper Peninsula -- on film, at least.
I must say I have daydreams similar to yours, re coastal Maine. If you keep an eye out for listings for me on Casco Bay I will keep an eye out for listings for you on Lake Superior.

Why would anyone in their right mind want 9-month winters?

The winters aren't 9 months long. Though they are considerably harder than Lower Peninsula winters, for obvious reasons.
You see, Bubbles has been known to exaggerate for effect.

Bubbles (?!) As a new resident of the beautiful U.P. I am relieved to tell you that there is much more to do up here than drink. Yes, the winters are long, but soooo beautiful. We have learned to adjust by purchasing sleds, skies and tubes (next year a snowmobile) and have had wonderful family moments playing out in the white stuff. And the summers? Unbelievably fun!! Beaches, hiking, tourism. Come on up!!
