Gravatar Well put, Dale, as usual. The best thing about recent history around here, however, is the installation of a wonderful bishop (KCMO) that actually makes a huge effort to preach AND do the right thing. Since we are the birthplace of the National Catholic Reporter, there is much work to be done, but still.

Gravatar Do we have confirmation of McAuliffe's claim? All i can see is a quote from McAuliffe on Hugh Hewitt's program.

Seems like a thin basis for complaining angrily to the Knights of Malta.

i hope those who are complaining have either found confirmation of the claim, or are prefacing their complaints with "If this is true..".

Gravatar Yeah, but I say I have faults, like many people have faults. I wish I could follow 100% the teachings of the Catholic Church, but believe it or not, much to your chagrin, I am not Jesus Christ.

"Yes, yes. And my faults -- you know, Original Sin and all -- permit me to 'put aside' stuff that I can't deal with right now. Like I said, I'm not Jesus Christ; this 'living out your faith' business is his job, not mine. But yeah, I go to Mass."

Gravatar Truly despicable. Thank you Dale for helping to make known this betrayal of everything the Knights of Malta should stand for. I hope this raises a protest that will be heard by the Pope.

Gravatar It's always been like this, more or less. The inestimable Flannery O'Connor (died 1964) used to say that she always thought the Church's motto was "The wrong man for the job."

Gravatar There is more than one group calling itself the Knights of Malta. Do we know the one it is? (And are we sure?) I just got an angry email after I sent a protest to knightsofmalta.org.

Gravatar Signe--An angry email saying what?

Did the writer deny that T.M. is soon to be honored as a member of the Knights of Malta?

Gravatar I'm afraid I just assumed that the address knightsofmalta.org would get me to the "right" group. The link in the posts about it is to another address. The gentleman at the above address categorically denied any connection to McAuliffe, but there are apparently numerous groups using an approximation of that name. Has anyone received a response from smom.org (Order of Malta)? which was the link at Relapsed Catholic.

Gravatar The legitimate, historic Knights of Malta(Catholic) that date back to the Crusades have a web site located here:

http://www.smom.org

In international law, these Knights are considered a sovereign entity and quite a few countries exchange ambassadors with them. I assume this is the one that's admitting McAuliffe.

There are, I believe, four Knights of Malta(non-Catholic; one's Anglican and I believe the others are Lutheran) that the legitimate order recognizes and cooperates with on international projects. And there are numerous groups calling themselves Knights of Malta but which are not recognized by the historic Knights.

Gravatar Lifesite news is reporting that Terry has only applied to be a Knight. He has not been accepted.
http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2007...n/ 07013108.html
Excerpt:
"LifeSiteNews called the Knights of Malta office in Washington, where it was confirmed that Terry McAuliffe has indeed submitted an application to the Knights of Malta, which is currently under review. A director told LifeSiteNews that the Knights have no control over whom submits an application, but do make the decision whether a candidate fulfills all the requirements to join their ranks.

According to the Knights own website, McAuliffe fails to be a candidate to their order by their own requirements since an applicant must be "in good standing with the church"; an impossible situation on account of McAuliffe's pro-abortion views. A candidate also must have "a record of service to the Catholic Church and to Catholic-related causes by lending professional expertise or 'hands-on' volunteer service to the poor", a record which is tarnished by McAuliffe lending his expertise to push the anti-life agenda of the Democratic National Committee.

Currently, the fault lies not with the Knights of Malta, but with McAullife's two sponsors and pastor, who "to avoid possible embarrassment" have the responsibility to make sure that the applicant satisfies the criteria for admission."

Gravatar I guess fact-checking isn't that important if you've got something you want to get off your chest.

Gravatar Let's see--I said "about to be admitted."

(1) Since Richard Riordan, the pro-abort former mayor of L.A. is a member (thought Riordan has a history of charitable endeavors for the poor to his credit);

and (2) there are no public consequences for pro-abortion political advocacy by Catholics, "about to be admitted" sounds about right.

Feel free to dismiss it as primal scream therapy, though.

Gravatar Let's see--I said "about to be admitted."

Dale,
Do you have any source that say he WILL be accepted into the Knights of Malta? I think it will be worthy of criticism if he is accepted, but have yet to see any evidence that he will be. That is why I am honestly asking if you know something about this that I don't. Cheers.

Gravatar Joshua:

The above comment was a response to pauli.

Thanks for your lifesite link, too. That was very, very helpful.

Do I have any evidence that he is absolutely going to be admitted? Frankly, no, I don't. However, reading the Lifesite story, I did not see any comments from the interviewed source that indicated political advocacy of unrestricted abortion was a bar to membership.

Gravatar Dale,
Rod Dreher just mentioned the following in the comments on his blog:

"Did you know they accepted Rupert Murdoch a few years ago? He was nominated by Cardinal Mahony."

Sounds like accepting Terry McAuliffe would be par for the course, unfortunately. Excellent blog, BTW.

Gravatar Now that Drinan is dead will he be able to find a priest to vouch that he is "in good standing"?

Really - the best way to do this folks is to tell Keith Ellison and his CAIR buddies that Terry is joining an Islamo-phobic society. That will put and end to this.

Gravatar "Primal Scream Therapy"?

Dale, my friend, with the month you've had, I'd say you'd be more than entitled to that. Speaking of which , may I be the first to wish you Happy February 1!

Gravatar Kev:

Thanks--on all counts. Yes, here's hoping for a better month. Happy January's Over! Day to you, too.

Gravatar Happy Not-January!

Primal scream therapy, yeah. Actually had some neighbors in the next apartment who did that, back in the day.

Perhaps that explains it, perhaps not.

peace,
