Having a Harvard elitist dispense gratuitous insulting opinions, in San Francisco before an audience of liberal fat cats, about people whose votes will be absolutely crucial in the Fall is great campaign strategy. For the Republicans! What is really rich over the net is to read the opinions by some of Obama's liberal base angrily arguing that Obama's comments were right on target:

With the mask slipping this early to show the usual liberal contempt for average Americans, I think the Obama campaign slogan of "Yes We Can!" may be right on target: "Yes We Can" do worse than McGovern in 72.

The same charming commenter I linked to above also had a post after the last Democrat who ran for President went down in flames.

Pretty up her analysis for public consumption and that is precisely what many liberals, probably including Obama, think about people who have the temerity to have political convictions different from them. Thank you Red State for reminding me about this post.

Donald, I'd never seen that piece before. Wow. There must be something in the coffee liberals drink to make them so arrogant, and it looks like Obama's been filling up from the same carafe.

One slight error, Dale. The date won't be 01.20.13. It will be 01.20.17.

And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them ...
Oh, don't give him such a rough time about it. Doesn't this perfectly explain Rev. Jeremiah Wright?

Obama's getting the kid gloves. And now they're talking about how McCain is not as independent as people think he is. Uh oh.

To be fair,
Castro Street itself is, mentally, so far off from where much of the rest of the country's mindspace that anytime you have a national politician talk in words, phrases, and ideas that they can roughly comprehend, it's inherently and inevitably going to be profoundly offensive and insulting to the rest of humanity.
And vice versa, of course.
His biggest mistake was going to San Francisco: a city that is perhaps a necessary evil for Democrats and their political fund-raising, but a necessary evil that is to be avoided at all costs.

I probably shouldn't have made that sound so hyperbolic (or why I said Castro Street when I was clearly thinking Haight-Ashbury?).
There are places culturally similar to San Francisco of course. Harvard, Berkeley, Martha's Vineyard, a couple others. But they are relatively few and far apart in this country.
After all, what makes Obama's comment especially idiotic, is that there are plenty of liberals who live in non-urban settings, or who have some sort of theistic belief, and even some who like fishing and hunting.
If you're going to diss a large group, make sure it's one that most voters don't belong to, or at least one that you don't need in order to win elections.

Myles,
Castro isn't that different from Haight-Ashbury. Castro is actually sort of the über-Mecca for the LGBT movement, if memory serves...

Any of you from small town Pennsylvania? I spent most of my life there, and I know exactly what he means.

Nope. But I'm from the "small towns in the Midwest" category he refers to, and I don't.
