Were he alive today, I bet Chesterton would have a thing or two to say about the paradoxical phenomenon that those most concerned about "empowering the laity" are by far the most elitist, clericalist, and contemptuous of the laity in the Church today.

It's not like it would take all that long for people to learn what a few rarely-used words mean.
Bishop Trautman must think we're all a bunch of knuckle-dragging lummoxes.
How sad.

Because a Bishop has accepted the doughty duties to Teach, Rule, and Sanctify and because Bishop Trautman does what he does, I am, sometimes tempted to consider him Bishop Esau, selling his Duties for Jacobin pottage.

+++++++++ begin quote ++++++++++++
LITURGY. A public service, duty, or work. In Scripture it refers to the religious duties to be performed by priests and levites in the Temple, especially those related to the Sacrifice; in Christian use among the Eastern Churches it means the Eucharistic Sacrifice.
In present day usage liturgy is the official public worship of the Church and is thus distinguished from private devotion. It is the special title of the Eucharist, and the administration of the sacraments with the annexed use of the sacramentals.
From a theological viewpoint, the liturgy is the exercise now on earth of Christ's priestly office, as distinct from his role as teacher and ruler of his people. Christ performs this priestly office as Head of his Mystical Body, so that Head and members together offer the sacred liturgy. Its function, therefore, is twofold: to give honor and praise to God, which is worship, and to obtain blessings for the human race, which is sanctification. (Etym. Latin liturgia; from Greek leitos, of the people + ergon, work: leitourgia, public duty, public worship.)

Bishop Trautman's risible claim..
All liturgy is pastoral. If translated texts are to be the authentic prayer of the people, they must be owned by the people and expressed in the contemporary language of their culture.
And my response....
Funny he should mention that. In a certain sense, prior to Ordinaries like him, we did "own" Liturgy it in the sense it was our common possession and it was our right as a Christian.
Can. 214 The Christian faithful have the right to worship God according to the prescripts of their own rite approved by the legitimate pastors of the Church and to follow their own form of spiritual life so long as it is consonant with the doctrine of the Church.
Can. 846 §1. In celebrating the sacraments the liturgical books approved by competent authority are to be observed faithfully; accordingly, no one is to add, omit, or alter anything in them on one’s own authority.
So, according to Bishop Trautman, I can, in effect, have my spiritual property rights both denied and stolen, and, not only that, he then audaciously claims to speak for me when he claims that was my desire?

Will they understand these words from the various new Collects : "sullied," "unfeigned," "ineffable," "gibbet," "wrought," "thwart"? - Bishop Donald Trautman
Hmm...
The Bishop to the translators:
"You have sullied the text - you have sought
For hard words - I must thwart what you've wrought.
I (ineffably pained)
DECREE (with wrath unfeigned)
THAT YOU SHALL TO A GIBBET BE BROUGHT."
The translators to the Bishop:
"What a sad, sullied soul you exhibit!
We will thwart your resort to a gibbet -
With ineffable glee
And unfeigned revelry,
Bring to nought all you’ve wrought - so just skip it!”

Please, Maureen - any unworthiness is mine, or, rather, is in my scribblings - they're not much, but they're all I can do.
