Lennon did not boast that the Beatles were bigger than Jesus, he worried out loud to an interviewer that to some people they were bigger than Jesus - and implied that that was a bad thing. People in the Deep South of America jumped to conclusions based on a misinterpretation, like you have just done, and went round burning Beatles records etc.
