Gravatar Dear Dr. E. Adnought,

Reading you reminds me of David Morrison at his blog. Thank you for your intelligence and cogency.

Gravatar Thanks Andy! Reading you reminds me why I blog! Have a ripper day

Gravatar what is an islander bouncer?

Gravatar Dread: well put, and rather distressing to hear this kind of stuff going on! I'm a bit puzzled by your description of your Jewish friend as "my boyfriend." What does that mean for a celibate person? Genuinely curious.

Gravatar That is fucking outrageous.
You need to publicise this a lot more widely, though. The RSL and the club may do more if it gets into the media...

Gravatar Those bouncers seriously have nothing better to do, so they pull shit like this to assert their power. I have had problems with them at Sydney City RSL before so this doesn't surprise me in the least. What a bunch of tossers.

Gravatar What would they do with a Sikh?

What would they do with a Sikh soldier?

What would they do with a cancer victim?

Would be fun to turn up with someone badly damaged in the scone department by the sort of accident that removes pieces of skull.

Put your hat on. No, I gotta show respeck..

Put your hat on NOW. No, my brain is throbbin cos I yam gettin angreeeee..

Bar clears, takings right down.

Gravatar Dreadnought,

Though I was 2000km's away at the time, I've sent the RSL an email telling them exactly what I think of their horrendously ignorant behaviour.

What a bunch of fools.

Gravatar Sylv...I think he was Samoan, from Samoa.

That's a personal question G Shroff, you won't mind if I don't answer mate.

James, we're trying to decide whether or not to go public big time. Having a chat with some interested parties.

Thanks for your support Misha, it was a shame.

They actually commented that they have the same policy 'for them Indian blokes who wear turbans' David Tiley, so I suppose they discriminate against them too.

Thanks for your email David. They need to know this kind of thing is just not on.

Gravatar That's terrible dreadnought. What a bunch of horrible little men. Maybe that's why my WWII veteran dad never joined the RSL, never had time for types like Ruxton either claiming to speak for him.

Gravatar A real pity that you couldn't stay due to some ignorant piece of work trying to do things 'by the book'.

What do they know about respect, to show such disrespect?

Gravatar DN, why do you feel so compelled to mention the bouncer's ethnicity a number of times? Also, I feel that the club has the right to enforce their rule, and while you are on their turf, you should pay respect to their traditions. The RSL may be at times a cranky, conservative organization, but they do stand for some decent things as well. Don't forget, respect is a two way street.

Gravatar If he was just wearing a kippa then that should have been fine. But a beanie is something else.

Gravatar This reminds me of the time I had to agree with someone from the Patriotic Youth League over at darpism.com, but it really isn't as simple as you make out. The RSL has a right to a dress standard, and if the hat was untidy or whatever then it's their right to refuse entry, or to ask him to leave. The fact that you say the venue's a dive makes me suspicious of bigotry, but I'd be careful equating people with Nazis.

I don't mean to be condescending, but sometimes before creating a commotion it's worth taking a few deep breaths and asking whether you've (1) explained yourself fully and politely, and (2) actually obeyed the spirit of the rule.

And at the end of the day, "the first covenant forged on Sinai ten thousand years ago" means very little if it's resulted in a hat that's of a disrespectfully casual nature. I imagine a synagogue would balk at a crass, messy baseball cap being worn inside.

Gravatar We explained that the man is a Jew.

Talking of respect in a venue that houses pokie machines and regular tit shows is a joke.

Bigotry? The bouncers were Samoans, I mentioned this point because they were enormous, intimidating men.

Re: the hat, the day non Jews can tell Jews how to express themselves religiously is the day good people realise club rules have gone too far.

I cannot believe the RSL's policy is so unfair, but if it is, and it seems it must be given the bouncers' behaviour, it must be changed.

Gravatar Yeah, he was Saa.

I had a chat to him afterwards and he assured me that if Dave was wearing a propper kippa it wouldn't have been a problem. His issue was with it being a 'beanie'.

I dunno - sounds like completely different shit he told you. I overheard your comment to him about the sikh thing. Didn't cut much ice.

There were quite a few Jews in attendance last night; Polywise, Ant, Karter, Nadine ...and another guy who escapes me. I discussed it with them and they were rather perplexed by it all.

Gravatar It is perplexing. I just cannot believe it's official RSL policy. We're checking up whether it's institutional discrimination because of some policy that needs to be reviewed or because of some mistake made by the bouncers.

The Sikh comment was particularly wrong.

We just wanted to have a quiet beer!

Gravatar Damn them and their hat-removing bollocry. My great grandfather fought in WWI and my Grandfather fought in WWII and they couldn't give a fucks-be-damn about whether I wear my treasured Terry Towelling hat in an RSL or not.

What does greater disrespect: a head covering or encouraging the breaking up of households by encouraging gambling and alcoholism?

Keep up the good fight.

Cheers, Spleenie

Gravatar Thanks Spleenie mate. It seems more than a little rich to me too! We'll wait and see what the RSL officials have to say, but it better be bloody good.

Gravatar Enough! You walked in there, you MUST abide by their dress and standard codes. The RSL was initially a proxy soldier's mess, a mess in which you took your hat off to respect the Queens picture on the wall. If you have a blatant objection to this dress standard, then don't walk in the door. As a servicemen of over 15 years, I object yo your politicising this issue. In years gone by, ex-service personnel had limited opportunities to congretate as a group without discrimination by anti-war fuckwits. Now, you go into their domain and piss and moan about dress rules.
Give us a fucking break! If there was such an issue, convince the crowd to move somewhere else. Why you persist in using either your sexuality or your partner's religion as a crutch for your inadequacies is beyond me. I have no problem with letting genuine religious artifacts inside the RSL. When you claim a yarmulka is code for 'religious beanie' and then complain when your are legally asked to leave the premises, then, my gay friend, I have absolutley NO sympathy for you whatsoever.
Quit bitching, girly-man.

Gravatar My sexuality? A crutch? Anti-war? Have you read anything on the site you silly old bastard?! Girly-man? If you don't have Arnie's guns my veteran friend, it's more than pathetic to mimic his machismo.

Of course your comment is a blatant attempt to garner linkage with outrageous language.

Too bad, that kind of ploy is pretty passe on DREADNOUGHT, try harder next time and pack your brain. Bastard or not, there's no excuse for shit writing.

Gravatar The whole post is a rave. Nothing else matters but this...The RSL have a dress standard and it doesn't include wearing beanies inside the building. If you don't like it, don't go there. It's not a pub.

Dragging religion into the event has no meaning or signifigence - what religion wears a beanie?

and the line...practice their religion without fear of retribution, it is an outrage. is an emotive plea of irrelevence.

Your mate is not practicing his religion - he's on the town.

The issue has nothing to do with religion or sexual preferences. It has nothing to do with the RSL and it's role in society.

You were simply on the piss and objected to being reminded of the dress rules.

You know how it goes...when in Rome etc

Get over it and drink elsewhere. You and your mate are the only outrage.

Oh, and I did email the club suggesting they ban you permanently.

Gravatar [Comment deleted because it was stupid and rude].

DREADNOUGHT is about serious argument, not wild rants.

If you have a serious argument, post it.

Gravatar Because we all know that it takes real machismo to attack someone in their blog's comments box without signing one's real name to it...

Gravatar Strikes me as rather bothersome and annoying on your part. You're free to wear your hat as an exercise of religion, they're free to have a policy of no hats. If you or the Pope don't like their policy or feel it will anger God, don't go inside. You can also pray for their destruction if you like, but making a big public scene seems rude.

Gravatar Wow, who let the trolls out?

Taking the arguments here to a logical extreme, one can set up a club that bans Jews, Aboriginals, Sikhs, etc.

This might appeal to some people here, but thankfully, Australia has laws against such nonsense.

Gravatar Oh, and it's never had anything to do with our sexuality. Someone has a telling fixation with faggotry.

Gravatar I'm with CB and others.

A beanie is disrespectful considering the place you were in and the dress code that they are free to enforce.

Get over it.

Gravatar Disrespectful to whom?

Gravatar Dress code? Wet t-shirts are respectful how?

Gravatar US readers might want to note that the RSL in Australia is not exclusively or even predominantly a soldiers' anything anymore. They're more like your Indian Casinos than VFW clubs...

Gravatar I'm not teribly au fait with the Jewish faith, but I thought Saturday was the Sabbath, and as such going out on the pop would be a little sacreligious; if the argument for the beanie is that the wearer is devoutly religious, isn't the disrespect of the Sabbath a bit hypocritical? I'm going to draw crabs here, but I find a few of these episodes to be a result of people being a bit precious rather than any form of discrimination. The tradition in the RSL, a place primarily for returned service people, is that hats not be worn, as a mark of respect to those who didn't return. This creates the invideous situation of who's culture over-rules the other?

Gravatar Perhaps you should have posted that disrespectful mail...

let all see how he speaks.

Instructive.

Gravatar Kim, don't you know anything!

The reason for a hats off rule at RSLs is as a mark of respect for those that died protecting our country.

Oh, and DREADNOUGHT, at every RSL I've ever been to they ALWAYS play the ode to remembrance at 6pm sharp. That's respect!

As for the wet t-shirt comps, they're free to entertain themselves how they see fit without having to answer to any whinging PC police. Nice to use this as an argument as to why they don’t deserve respect though. Onya!

Geezus people, aren't there more important things in the world to worry about than some poor cry baby having his feelings hurt because his beanie wasn't acceptable.

I repeat: GET OVER IT.

Gravatar Cal...I KNOW NOTHING?

Daughter of and friend of Marines serving today.

YOU get over it.. that is what they serve and die for.

Our rights. Our freedom. All of ours.

You get over it, baby.

Gravatar Sorry..Kim here.

Put my real name always.

Gravatar Sun down Friday to sun down Saturday is the Sabbath.

Really I don't have to explain Jewish customs to non-Jews here.

Re respect, we called beforehand to ask about the dress code, and were told 'we're casual, just no ripped clothes'.

DREADNOUGHT is not a place for name-calling and bitch fighting. Certainly not by people who post neither their names nor their email addresses.

The only people taking this out of context are the influx of rabid cowards from other blogs.

Gravatar So Kim, you agree with me then. They deserve respect.

It follows than that our cry baby should get over it.

Gravatar No, Cal.

I di not agree with you.

Gravatar Soory for wrong spellings...

I am sure you understod tho'

Gravatar Respect is a common denominator...

why does a hat matter?

When it matters most in a religous sense?

That oughta be the least of all things.

Unless you are a very small person.

Gravatar "why does a hat matter" - eh? Haven't we done this already!!!

I give up!

Gravatar Good, Cal.

Give up.

Gravatar Don't argue with a girl, gay or Jew or any combo thereof..

You can't have a last word or a better argument.

As for me..I'll just bwear you down

Gravatar bwear? I think it's a new word...

even worse than what I meant

Gravatar Are you all being nice now? Good!
