Hey, John, what do you think of the idea of having a Catholic blogger pissup ... er, fellowship in Sydney in 2008?

Gravatar Can us Brits come?

Gravatar If you're in Sydney for World Youth Day in 2008 then you're welcome

See my blog ...

Gravatar Sounds like a brilliant idea Steve, send me an email...

It would be great to see Brits at any WYD event Mark.

Gravatar In fact, just as at Pope John Paul the Great's funeral, and just as at Pope Benedict's formal innauguration, this great event at Cologne is a visible, historical, public, real fact--more than a symbol, a real fact that communicates beyond itself. There at Marienfeld we see hundreds of thousands of young people from all over the world, all at peace,, all offering love and praise and thanksgiving to God through Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, led by the visible and historical witness and sign of unity, the Bishop of Rome. Would that every day was like this!

Gravatar Why do we have to wait three years for the next WYD? I thought it was every two years. That sucks, man.

Gravatar A one-million-strong turnout is certainly no small matter! According to the BBC, the crowd extended as far as the eye could see and thousands had camped out over-night in preperation for the outdoor Mass!

I had been planning since early last year to attend WYD 2005, but it was just too expensive. It wasn't the airline tickets (family connections get me a 75% discount!) but just the fact that Europe is so expensive by itself. I have every intention of being in Sydney for 2008, though, and expect to see every one of you there.

Gravatar I am officially too old for WYD. Sigh. My first mid-life crisis. But I'll be praying for the rest of you... and I hear those Aussies are famous for their hospitality and terrific humor. They're gonna need it with a million kids comin' at them.

Gravatar It will be magnificent Teresa!

Bruno, our dioceses here have special discounts and packages set up to enable anyone, of any means, to attend WYDs. Maybe you could start planning your Aussie trip now.

Well said Perry.

Santiago, only about 1400 sleeps

Gravatar I just hope there's a lot more organisation. Don't want to come to a scrum! (Read scary accounts of the train station in Köln.)

Gravatar One question: Are "counter-demonstrations" popular in Australia? That is, will groups like the VGLRL demonstrate and perform 'street theater' skits at WYD 2008 in protest of supposed (re: non-existent) Catholic abuses and purges of homosexuals?

Not that such a thing would stop me from coming, of course. I just like to be prepared. I've already started planning to attend WYD 2008 (yes, even though it's still three years away!) I hope your blog is still around by then.

Gravatar Sydney's train system - which doesn't usually work except during special events like this - will be fine Mark.

Bruno, I'd like to see them try it on against 1,000,000 joyful, engaged young Catholics. It might be a conversion-fest!
